Sezession

Izložba Etnografski muzej-palača s potpisom organizira se povodom završetka obnove Etnografskog muzeja kojom je rekonstruirana dekoracija pročelja ove građevine. Jedina u secesijskom stilu namjenski podignuta muzejska zgrada u Hrvatskoj time je dobila izgled koji joj je podario njezin arhitekt Vjekoslav Bastl početkom 20. stoljeća. Cilj je ove izložbe prikazati, s jedne strane, povijest izgradnje zgrade koja je prvotno udomljavala Trgovačko-obrtnički muzej, a s druge njezinu recentnu obnovu kroz arhivske projekte, stare fotografije, fotografsku i drugu dokumentaciju te artefakte.

A great number of researchers have already written on Stoclet House. This
essay is about its garden and provides a way of analyzing the whole ensemble from a
‘garden viewpoint’. As will be shown, the following characteristic features of
Hoffmann’s architecture are all well known in garden design: the inscription of
the site within an urban context, the strong link between a building and its garden
— between the interior and the exterior — the importance of the visitor’s own
movement to the experience of spaces or optical sensations, or Hoffmann’s
different ways of taking into account the changing light within a day, a season or
a weather change. Therefore the author decided to take the reader on a kind of
‘promenade’ through the ensemble and through a lost world of utopian ideals that
had been developed around 1900. Sometimes exhaustive in its descriptive details,
this essay is meant as a kind of archeology of a ‘hidden garden’ whose opening to
the public might take another decade or more.

Proust has shown little interest in the decorative arts of his time, but his work bears the mark of the "submarine style" distinctive of Art nouveau. The low bookshelves with glass panes in the Grand Hôtel room at Balbec ― the symbol of À la Recherche’s unity, according to Georges Poulet in Proustian Space ― prove to be authentic witnesses of “modern style”. But what does “modern style” actually mean? À la Recherche includes five occurrences of the expression that could lead to misunderstanding. Contrary to a preconceived idea, it is not the English name for Art nouveau. This French coined anglicism refers to the international revival of the decorative arts at the beginning of the twentieth century, a fascinating but disturbing blend of aesthetics and social ideas. Proust detected at once and discreetly highlighted the cosmopolitan and "rastaquouère" (so to speak "métèque") inspiration of an ephemeral artistic movement contemporary with the Dreyfus affair. Enriched with an abundant and entirely original iconography, full of new discoveries and identifications, Rastaquarium brings back to life an epoch of which the novelist caught the essence. For the first time the whole question of decorative arts in À la recherche is fully tackled in all its ramifications, in a fascinating instance of the network of connections at the heart of Proust’s system.

Proust n’a manifesté que bien peu d’intérêt pour les arts décoratifs de son temps, mais son œuvre ponctuée d’aquariums est marquée par le «style sous-marin» caractéristique de l’Art nouveau. Les «bibliothèques vitrées» de la chambre de Balbec ― dans lesquelles Georges Poulet voyait le symbole de l’unité de l’œuvre ― se révèlent d’authentiques témoins du «modern style». Mais qu’est-ce que le «modern style»? L’expression, qui revient cinq fois dans À la Recherche du temps perdu, n’avait jamais vraiment été élucidée. Contrairement à une idée reçue, ce n’est en rien le nom anglais de l’Art nouveau. Cet anglicisme bien français désigne un renouveau international des arts décoratifs qui, mêlant esthétique et idées sociales, fascine et inquiète… Proust a parfaitement perçu et discrètement mis en valeur l’inspiration cosmopolite et «rastaquouère» d’un courant artistique dont le bref épanouissement coïncide avec les années de l’affaire Dreyfus. Enrichi d’une vaste iconographie, entièrement originale, fourmillant de trouvailles et d’identifications nouvelles, Rastaquarium fait revivre une époque dont l’écrivain a su capter l’essentiel. Toujours abordée de façon fragmentaire, la question des arts décoratifs dans la Recherche n’avait jamais été traitée dans son ensemble, seule manière de saisir les réseaux de correspondances si chers à Proust.

Croatian Embassy in Vienna and Zagreb Modern gallery are commemorating 100th anniversary of Otto Wagner’s death with the exhibition on his influence on Croatian late 19th and early 20th century architecture. The exhibition is held in the former Wagner’s house in Vienna, Rennweg 3, which houses now Croatian Embassy. It will be opened between October 12th and February 10th 2019.
The Exhibition was then transferred to the Bezirksmuseum 3. Landstraße, Vienna, where it was held between February 15th and September 11th, 2019

The stylistic and historical analysis of the Croatian bridge design and construction of the 19th and first half of the 20th century has not yet even been tackled. This paper presents the work of the Vukovar - based engineer - architect Fran Funtak thus covering at least a small part of this topic. As a scholarship holder of the National Government, Fran Funtak graduated from the Polytechnic in Budapest. Being employed in the Josip Banheyer and Son company as an expert in reinforced concrete construction, he quickly turned this small trading and construction company into one of the leading Croatian bridge and other reinforced concrete construction companies. This was the result of his talent as well as the quality and beautiful design of his bridges. The Zagreb-based firm Josip Dubsky was the company’s major competitor for large construction projects. His design work started as early as 1903 during his studies. It was, however, not until 1906 that the bridge across the river Vuka won the company a reputation of a reliable constructor. In the period before World War I a large number of reinforced concrete bridges were built as a part of the measures undertaken by the Croatian National Government to modernise transportation system. The Banheyer and Son company with its leading architect Fran Funtak received a large number of these commissions. Until 1910 Funtak’s bridge design was mainly engineering-based without many stylistic features except for a secessionist inscription on the bridge beam with a date of its construction. In the subsequent period until 1914 and the company’s termination, his bridges became lavishly decorated in the Secessionist style. Date and year are still noticeable on the beam but the usual motifs became rings „suspended” on the bridge cantilevers, rectangular projections, disc motifs, shallow horizontal and vertical cuttings. All these elements were also coloured. Bridge parapet ends became more massive, at first with strengthened banisters but later mostly built in reinforced concrete. Remarkable examples of secession-style constructions were the bridges across the canal Voćinska - Drava (1911) and the bridges in Orahovica, Čačinci, Sunja as well as drawings for some unknown bridges in the Vinkovci region, all of them with specific trapezoid openings. A special example is the arch bridge across the Biđ near Vrpolje not only for its specific construction (arch bridge) but also for the quality of expressiveness with obelisks at the bridge parapet ends and the specific division of fields between the intrados and the road. Funtak built bridges throughout northern Croatia (about 60 of them between 1903 and 1914) and in this way brought modern materials and types of reinforced concrete constructions as well as modern Secession-style vocabulary into the smallest and most remote regions. This paper is based on the research conducted mainly in the Construction Engineering Department of the Internal Department of the National Government of the Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia between 1903 and 1914. Archive data are combined and compared with data from the publications of that period particularly the annual reports for individual counties as well as the newspapers.

Sezessionskonflikte, hervorgerufen durch das Streben ethnischer, sprachlicher und religiöser Gruppen nach staatlicher Unabhängigkeit, stellen die primäre Methode der Staatswerdung dar. Ein besonderer Ausdruck der fortschreitenden Fragmentierung und Destabilisierung des internationalen Systems sind De-facto-Staaten.Der Beitrag klärt, was ein De-facto-Staat ist, wodurch er sich von anderen Erscheinungsformen im internationalen System unterscheiden lässt und inwieweit De-facto-Staaten als dauerhafter Bestandteil des internationalen Systems angesehen werden können. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen,
welche Formen von Staatlichkeit sich in De-facto-Staaten entwickeln und wie die internationale Gemeinschaft darauf reagiert. Anhand des Fallbeispiels Abchasien wird gezeigt, mit welchen Strategien und Instrumenten die EU versucht, ihre Politikziele im Zuge ihrer Nachbarschaftspolitiken zu erreichen. Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Rolle Russlands werden die EU-Politiken in Abchasien kritisch analysiert,
zentrale Hindernisse identifiziert und mögliche Alternativen diskutiert.

The construction of the Vukovar's old water tower, built in 1913 by Banheyer & Son Company based on the design of the Vukovar engineer Fran Funtak, is described in the paper. It is a fine specimen of the late secession architecture in Croatia. The water tower is made of reinforced-concrete and was built according to construction principles that were considered highly advanced at that time. Its capacity is 50,000 litres and it is 19,00 metres high. The water tower was damaged during the 1991-95 war and was rebuilt in accordance with the original plans immediately after the end of hostilities.

La construction du vieux château d'eau de Vukovar, bâti en 1913 par Banheyer & Son selon le projet d'ingénieur de Vukovar M. Fran Funtak, est décrite dans l'ouvrage. Il s'agit d'un monument intéressant de l'architecture fin de l'époque de sécession en Croatie. Le château d'eau est fait en béton renforcé et a été bâti selon les principes de construction considérés très avancés à l'époque. Sa capacité est de 50.000 litres et sa
hauteur est de 19.00 mètres. Le château d'eau a été endommagé pendant la guerre 1991-1995, et a été reconstruit, conformément aux plans originaux, immédiatement après la fin des hostilités.

Im Artikel beschreibt man den Bau des alten Wasserturms in Vukovar aus dem Jahr 1913., den die Firma Banheyer u. Sohn nach dem Entwurf des vukovarer Ingenieurs Fran Funtak erbaute. Es handelt sich von einem interessanten Denkmal der Ingenieurarchitektur des späten Jugendstils in Kroatien. Der Turm wurde aus Stahlbeton nach den damals modernsten Prinzipen erbaut, mit Kapazität von 50 000
Liter Wasser und Höhe von 19,00 Meter. Der Wasserturm war während des Krieges 1991./95. beschädigt, wurde aber sofort danach in Originalform erneuert.

Architectural atlas of Zagreb contains overview of the history of Zagreb architecture and 900 entries on buildings from all parts of the city.
The buildings are grouped according to Zagreb’s neighborhoods: Upper Town, Kaptol, Lower Town - Centre, Lower Town - West, Lower Town - East, Savska street, Vukovarska street and Slavonska avenue, New Zagreb, etc. Each of these neighborhoods has been split into streets, and the buildings are organized according to their official street number. Along with each city area, a map showing the locations of all the marked buildings mentioned in the atlas is also attached.
The buildings in this atlas have been selected primarily according to their importance to the history of Zagreb’s architecture, while also bearing in mind their interest to the average visitor to Zagreb. The city center (Lower Town, Upper Town, and Kaptol) has been covered in most detail.

Wie in der gesamten österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie spielten auch in Kroatien die an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste ausgebildeten Architekten in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. und der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine entscheidende Rolle. Bis in die 1890-er Jahre studierten die meisten kroatischen Architekten an der Akademie in der Klasse von Friedrich von Schmidt und anschließend, seit dem Ende des Jahrzehnts, ging die Führungsrolle auf die Fachschule Otto Wagners  über, des Architekten, der in seinen Texten sowie in den errichteten Bauten das Fundament der modernen Architektur in (Mittel-) Europa legte.
Die Absicht dieser Ausstellung und der begleitenden Publikation ist es, Einblick zu geben in diejenigen Entwürfe Wagners, die unmittelbar für Kroatien konzipiert wurden, und in jene, die einen Bezug zu Investoren und Firmen in Kroatien haben, sowie, die realisierten und nichtrealisierten Pläne seiner Schüler, die für das Gebiet des heutigen Kroatien angefertigt wurden, zu analysieren. Die größte Aufmerksamkeit ist Wagners in Zagreb lebenden Schülern Vjekoslav Bastl und Viktor Kovačić gewidmet, aber es werden auch für Kroatien bestimmte Pläne von Schülern Wagners gezeigt, die in anderen Teilen der Monarchie lebten. Obwohl es aufgrund des begrenzten Umfangs dieser Publikation nicht  möglich war, einen umfassenden Einblick in den Einfluss Otto Wagners auf die kroatische Architektur zu geben, widmet sich der Text kurz auch einzelnen Werken kroatischer Architekten, die nicht an der Fachschule der Wiener Akademie studiert haben, bei denen aber dennoch ein Einfluss Wagners und seiner Schule klar erkennbar ist. Der letzte Teil der Publikation soll aufzeigen, welche Transformation die Architektur der Schüler Otto Wagners in der Zeit zwischen dem ersten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts und den 1940-er Jahren durchlaufen hat.

Si è guardato a lungo a Klee come a un "classico del moderno", ricercato inventore di modelli compositivi definitivamente validi, di soluzioni tecniche o stilistiche da accogliere entro un determinato canone occidentale della forma e della composizione. In breve: come a un elusivo e impeccabile esploratore di limiti linguistici. In realtà il suo catalogo appare oggi ben poco "classico" o normativo: ci imbattiamo infatti in un ininterrotto susseguirsi o alternarsi di congetture, collaudi e verifiche; di convenzioni accolte con riserva, a titolo di prova; di lanci di dadi figurativi. Tradizioni esotiche e filologia contemporanea offrono a Klee semplici materiali di accumulo, repertori desueti o "macerie", come lui stesso scrive; gli uni e le altre sono poi verificati nelle loro possibilità; mimate o portate in scena a mo' di trovarobato storico, senza eccessivo credito né possibilità di una ripetizione che non sia pastiche.

L'opera di Klee si caratterizza per una sorta di costitutiva duplicità, tutt'altro che priva di pertinenze nella tradizione tedesca o svizzero-tedesca: come per un dono di veggenza, in altre parole, intrecciato a uno scrupolo di costruzione, a un'esigenza di ordine e, possiamo dirlo, di canone compositivo. La particolare accortezza tecnico-professionale che accompagna l'artista in ogni momento della sua attività si unisce a una rara predisposizione fantastica: tra le due dimensioni, così nelle composizioni figurative come nei testi teorici e didattici, non c'è consequenzialità, c'è piuttosto salto, quasi queste stesse, di per sé perfino antitetiche, corressero parallele con modi che variano tra l'istrionico, il protervo, il puerile.

…Dreams of peace and of freedom, so smile in your sleep, bonny baby! von MORITZ VON ROCHOW Im März argumentierte ich an dieser Stelle für ein Recht Schottlands, auch im Falle einer Sezession von Großbritannien in der EU zu verbleiben. Meine Argumentation fußte darauf, dass auf die Schottland-Problematik nicht mehr die völkerrechtlichen Grundsätze der Diskontinuität der Mitgliedschaft in internationalen Organisationen anzuwenden sind, da sich die EU strukturell bereits zu weit von einer klassischen Internationalen Organisation entfernt hat. Sie hat hierbei eine wesensmäßige Staatsähnlichkeit angenommen, die staatliche Grundsätze als vorzugswürdig erscheinen lassen. In nahezu allen dezentral strukturierten Verfassungen ist anerkannt, dass eine innere Neugliederung nicht zu einem Ende der Zugehörigkeit zum Gesamtverbund führt. Dieser Verbleibegrundsatz ist meiner Ansicht nach ein allgemeiner Rechtsgrundsatz und kann als solcher unionsrechtliche Geltung beanspruchen. Einer teilweise geforderten Vertragsergänzung nach Art. 48 EUV bedarf es daher nicht, wenngleich sie zur Schaffung von Rechtssicherheit und als politisches Willkommens-Statement mit Sicherheit wünschenswert wäre und zur Regelung der Einzelfragen sogar unerlässlich erscheint.

Desde la Antgüedad, el cielo ha sido una de las temáticas más recurrentes en la historia del arte. Si bien se le suele adscribir a las corrientes artísticas tradicionales, este texto versará sobre el inicio de la abstracción a principios del siglo XX y su triunfo después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, especialmente en Estados Unidos. Desde este punto de vista, el punto de partida será la relación con el concepto de lo sublime en la producción de artistas como Barnett Newman y Mark Rothko desde finales de los años cuarenta y sus vínculos con otros anteriores, como Gustav Klimt y Kasimir Malevich, sin olvidar el simbolismo del arte paleocristiano y bizantino. La ausencia de elementos figurativos en la pintura abstracta, derivada supuestamente de su contenido profano, su subordinación a amplias superficies cromáticas y su ausencia de narratividad, puede relacionarse como veremos ciertos conceptos como el de sublimidad y eternidad.

[Since ancient times, Heaven has been one of the most important subjects in Art History. Although it is normally associated with traditional artistic trends, however, this text will be dealing with a period of time which begins with the rise of abstraction in the early twentieth century and ends with its triumph after the World War II, especially in the United States. From this point of view, the close association between the esthetic concept of “sublime” and the artistic work made by painters like Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko since the late forties will be the point of departure to establish a relation with some earlier artistic experiences (i. e. Gustav Klimt or Kasimir Malevich) and the symbolic influence from either Byzantine and Early Christian art. The lack of figurative elements in abstract painting, supposedly derived from its profane contents, its subordination to wide surfaces of color and its absence of narrativity, can be curiously related with eternity and the sublime.]

Članak govori o izložbi u bečkom Theatermuseumu koja je posvećena stogodišnjici nastanka čuvenog bečkog kabareta Fledermaus (Šišmiš). Arhitekturu prostora kabareta projektirao je čelni čovjek Wiener Werkstätte Josef Hoffmann, a dio plakata za predstave Bertold Löffler. Na izložbi je bio izložen i plakat hrvatskog umjetnika Tomislava Krizmana s prikazom Marye Delvard, jedne od najvećih zvijezda ovog kabareta.

This text deals with the interiors of the building of the Croatian National and University Library and State Archives, the most important Art-Nouveau building in Croatia. It discusses the iconographic program of its interior and how the selection of artists, craftsmen and companies that furnished it, was grounded in specific political position of Croatia in the early 20th century within the Austria-Hungary.
Ce texte traite de l’intérieur du bâtiment de la Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire et des Archives nationales de Croatie, le plus important bâtiment Art Nouveau de Croatie. Il traite du programme iconographique de son intérieur et de la manière dont la sélection des artistes, des artisans et des entreprises qui l’ont meublé s’est fondée sur la situation politique spécifique de la Croatie au sein de l’Autriche-Hongrie au début du XXe siècle.

Bleibt ein unabhängiges Schottland Mitglied der EU? Die Antwort hängt nicht zuletzt vom Selbstverständnis der Union als ein dem "Schlammspringer" vergleichbares Zwitterwesen zwischen Bundesstaat und Staatenbund ab. Zwischen schottischer Unabhängigkeit und Europäischer Integration besteht eine Interdependenz, die dazu führt, dass -so paradox es klingen mag -die Wiedergeburt eines souveränen Schottlands das Entstehen eines europäischen Volksverbundes bestätigt. Stellen wir uns einmal vor, die Einwohner des mit reichen Erdgasvorkommen vor der Küste gesegneten politisch konservativ dominierten Vorpommerns begehrten nach Art. 29 VIII GG die Sezession vom mehrheitlich sozialdemokratischen Mecklenburg. Dabei soll den selbstbewussten Ostseeinseln innerhalb des neuen Bundeslandes weitgehende Autonomie gewährt werden. Für dieses (noch) fiktive Eingangsbeispiel lässt sich aus Art. 29 GG und der Gesetzgebung im Vorfeld zweier erfolgreicher Referenden in Schaumburg-Lippe und Oldenburg 1975 folgender nahezu banaler Verfassungsgrundsatz herleiten: Wenn sich ein Teil eines Bundeslandes von diesem abspaltet, berührt dies nicht die Zugehörigkeit des Sezedenten zum Bunde (im Folgenden: Verbleibegrundsatz).
