Serbian Dialects

The article presents a selection of the material collected during the folkloristic field research carried out in the village of Topli Do on Stara Planina (The Balkan
mountain range, “Old Mountain”), in the period from 2016 to 2018. Out of the seven
people the author spoke to, the article includes the transcribed conversation with
the late Ivan Tošić, born in 1929. in Topli Do, conducted on May 2018. The material
taken at that time is comprehensive, detailed, comprises various folklore genres and
motifs, oral history, and has artistic value as well. Tošić covered a variety of themes,
including the traditional way of life in Topli Do, customs and beliefs (celebration
of Saint George’s Day, votive crosses, ritual processions, weather magic, and rituals
against hail), legends about vampires and buried treasure, the enigmatic church of Pilj,
accounts and anecdotes of haiduks (brigands) and certain local events concerning
the First and the Second World War, and even some prominent contemporaries of the
area, like Mita Gaga, the founder of the “Tigar” factory. In the repertoire of Ivan Tošić
we can follow the continuity of a large number of traditional topics in the area of remote and abandoned villages of Stara Planina and the continuity of beliefs, customs
and rituals. Along with continuity, there is also a transformation or disintegration of
certain beliefs and traditions. The collected field material is significant not only for
exploring the oral history and folklore tradition, but also for its linguistic value, as an
an authentic record of the archaic variant of the Prizren-Timok dialect spoken by the
narrator.

Desde una perspectiva de sociolingüística crítica, se analizan los asuntos de aceptación, discriminación y estigmatización de los hablantes de las modalidades menos aceptadas por la sociedad. Se investiga el fenómeno de la identidad lingüística de los hablantes de la variedad andaluza del español y las hablas regionales del sur de Serbia. La comparación de los rasgos lingüísticos análogos en español y serbio servirá como un instrumento para investigar y confrontar la cuestión de la identidad lingüística de los hablantes de ambas lenguas. Se observan tanto la interacción entre la sociedad, la lengua y los modelos culturales, como las ideologías lingüísticas y la relación entre la lengua y el poder social. En una encuesta hecha entre los estudiantes de filología hispánica se han comprobado sus puntos de vista sobre los asuntos de aprobación o desaprobación de las hablas meridionales de Serbia y España. El objetivo del análisis de las respuestas es aclarar diversas creencias, prejuicios, actitudes negativas, estereotipos y juicios lingüísticos que tradicionalmente acompañan las dos variedades descreditadas y despreciadas.

Acceptance, discrimination and stigmatization issues of less socially accepted varieties of language are analysed from the perspective of critical sociolinguistics. The paper discusses the question of linguistic identity in relation to the Andalusian variety of Spanish and southern varieties of Serbian speakers. The comparison of similar linguistic features in Spanish and Serbian serves as a tool to investigate and address the issue of linguistic identity of speakers of both languages. In this way we can observe the interaction between society, language and cultural models, such as language ideologies and the relationship between language and social power. In a survey made among Hispanic Philology students, their views on matters of approval or disapproval of the southern varieties of Serbian and Spanish were verified. The aim is to clarify various beliefs, prejudices, negative attitudes, stereotypes and linguistic judgments that traditionally accompany the two stigmatized varieties.

Рад представља приказ структуре доњомутничког говора косовско-ресавског дијалекта прелазног типа. Прикупљање грађе вршено је према критеријумима које је дефинисао Александар Белић. Након ексцерпирања грађе констатоване су опште фонетске, морфолошке и синтаксичке особине испитаног говора. Прелазни карактер овог говора омогућио је боље сагледавање општих косовско-ресавских говорних црта.

"SERBIAN AND MONTENEGRIN DIALECT DICTIONARIES AFTER 2000"
After 2000, there has been a dynamic development in the field of Serbian and Montenegrin subdialect dictionaries, which has resulted in the publication of 40 new titles. A very large amount of relevant lexical material has been assembled, the majority of which has been presented with the use of a unified methodology applied by specialized dialectological publishers. These factors have resulted in an increase in the lexical material useful in the comparative studies into dialects and subdialects. The greatest lexicographic achievement has undoubtedly been the 10-volume Rečnik srpskih govora Vojvodine [Dictionary of Serbian Dialects in Vojvodina], edited by Professor Dragoljub Petrović. As far as the territorial distribution of research is concerned, the largest portion of studies covers the area of Montenegro. In Serbia, besides thoroughly researched subdialects of the south-eastern part of the country and, recently, Vojvodina, there are still relatively poorly explored subdialects of Kosovo-Resava and Šumadija. This situation is likely to improve owing the activity of research institutions: Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, research institutes, as well as journals, especially Srpski dijalektološki zbornik [Serbian Dialectology Collection].

This Master’s thesis aims to determine which acoustic measures cue word stress in the Kosovo-Resava (KR) dialect of Serbian, along with the efficacy of the individual measures in telling apart stressed and unstressed syllables. Recordings were made of three female speakers of KR, ranging in age from 23 to 28, and analyzed in Praat (Boersma & Weenink, 2011).
KR is customarily regarded as a system with tone-driven stress, in which tone and metrical structure interact in such a manner that underlying Highs attract primary stress, except for the cases where stressing a High-toned syllable would be in tension with some higher-ranking constraint, a case in point being NONFINALITY. That being so, fundamental frequency is expected to correlate with lexical tone rather than metrical prominence. In addition, KR displays contrastive quantity in vowels, which is limited to stressed syllables on the surface. Stressed heavies have been reported to bear either of the two ‘pitch accents’: falling, with a High-Low contour tone, and the so-called long rising accent, with a level Low in the stressed syllable.
Analysis has shown that in KR light syllables, stress is phonetically encoded by a number of acoustic properties of stressed vowels, including increased duration, greater mean intensity, and higher average F1 frequency values in non-high vowels. Frequency-dependent intensity measures likewise show significant differences between vowels in stressed and unstressed syllables. Given the frequent but not obligatory creaky realization of word-final vowels in KR, which figures as a boundary marker, measures were taken from vowels in non-final syllables only. Apart from PrWd-final laryngealization, phonation type differences are employed in KR as a cue to metrical prominence, as evidenced by the items with stress on the peninitial light syllable. Unstressed vowels are characterized by steeper H1*-H2*, H1*-A1*, and H1*-A2* spectral tilt and the lower Cepstral Peak Prominence,
arguing for an increased level of breathiness as opposed to the modal voice in their stressed counterparts. The results are consistent with those obtained from the words with a medial long falling accent.
Logistic regression analysis was conducted in order to estimate the overall reliability of the model to distinguish between stressed and unstressed syllables, as well as how individual predictors fare on their own with respect to this goal. In line with the existing surveys of languages with contrastive tone, which impedes acoustic realization of word stress by means of the fundamental frequency, duration emerges as the most reliable predictor of stress in KR, with a 76.12% correct classification, while the accuracy of the entire model exceeds 80%. Also significant are the CPP, and F1 and F2 formant frequencies.

Овај мастер рад испитује која акустичка својства вокала корелирају са нагласком у косовско-ресавском дијалекту српског језика. Материјал је снимљен од трију говорника женског пола (старост између 23 и 28 година) из Крушевца и Јагодине и анализиран у софтверу Praat (Boersma/Weenink, 2011). Испитана је већина акустичких параметара за које је у литератури познато да представљају експоненте прозодијске проминентности, са изузетком фреквенције основног тона, која у КР као систему са лексичким тоном мора бити индикатор тона, а не наглашености. То нас оставља са трајањем вокала, њиховим просечним интензитетом и просечним фреквенцијама првог и другог форманта, којима су придодате три мере које корелирају са типом фонације сегмента: разлика амплитуде првог и другог хармоника (H1–H2), првог хармоника и првог форманта (H1–A1), као и првог хармоника и другог форманта (H1–A2), а уз то и амплитуда врха кепструма (CPP).

Istraživanja bidijalektizma i diglosije u nastavi stranih jezika uglavnom su se fokusirala na dosezanje bidijalektizma u ciljnom jeziku, odnosno na usvajanje njegovih različitih varijeteta, uključujući i nestandardne. Manji broj radova posvećen je pitanju o tome kako bidijalektizam u maternjem jeziku utiče na usvajanje pojedinih, mahom fonoloških i gramatičkih, sadržaja iz ciljnog jezika. Ovo istraživanje ima za cilj da pokaže kako dijalekti srpskog jezika koji nisu u osnovici standarda (tradicionalno određeni kao staroštokavski dijalekti) mogu uticati na usvajanje određenih fonoloških i gramatičkih kategorija portugalskog kao stranog jezika. Konkretno, ispitivan je uspeh govornika srpskog jezika koji uče portugalski kao strani u usvajanju izgovora poluotvorenih vokala portugalskog jezika (/ɛ/ i /ɔ/), upotrebe određenog člana, ličnih zamenica u službi glagolskih dopuna, kao i u razlikovanju značenja indikativa perfekta i imperfekta. Ispitanici, polaznici kursa portugalskog kao stranog jezika sa ciljem sticanja A2 nivoa kompetencije, izvorni su govornici staroštokavskih dijalekata, ali su kroz školovanje ovladali i standardnojezičkom normom srpskog jezika. Za potrebe istraživanja podeljeni su u dve grupe. U situacijama kada nastavnik poseže za maternjim jezikom učenikâ, u prvoj grupi korišćena je isključivo njegova standardnojezička norma, dok su u drugoj korišćene i odlike staroštokavskih dijalekata, koji su ispitanicima maternji varijeteti. Analiza rezultata testiranja kompetencije ispitanikâ u pogledu određenih kategorija ciljnog jezika pokazuje veću uspešnost u drugoj grupi i ukazuje na moguć pozitivan transfer iz njihovih maternjih varijeteta. Istraživanjem, stoga, želimo da ukažemo na potencijal nestandardnih varijeteta srpskog u nastavi stranih jezika i na potrebu razvijanja nastavničkih kompetencija koje bi doprinele njegovom iskorišćavanju.

В статье рассматривается семантический объем лингвонима “торлакский” в южнославянской диалектологии. Устанавливается, что в научной литературе термин использовался в широком смысле для обозначения комплекса балканизированных западноюжнославянских диалектов Болгарии, Сербии и Северной Македонии; в более узком смысле для обозначения сербских и хорватских диалектов призренско-тимокской зоны; в наиболее узком смысле для обозначения говоров торлаков – малой южнославянской этнической субгруппы, разделенной сербско-болгарской государственной границей. В терминах лингвогеографии определяется восточная, южная и западная граница торлакского диалектного комплекса; указывается на принципиальное различие между пучками генетических изоглосс в Западной Болгарии и Северной Македонии и зоной постепенного перехода от балканизированных говоров к небалканизированным в Сербии. По совокупности своих внутри- и внешнелингвистических признаков торлкаский диалектный комплекс уникален в славянском языковом мире.

Центральная проблема балканского языкознания, культурной антропологии и этнической истории состоит в нерешенности вопроса об общих (для Евразии) и специальных для Балкан (Юго-Восточной Европы) процессах (стратегиях, сценариях, актерах, механизмах) языковой и культурной конвергенции и дивергенции при сохранении или утрате самобытности, познание которых ценно для получения научного представления о многоэтнических, многоязычных, мультирелигиозных и поликультурных обществах на Евразийском, в т.ч. и постсоветском пространстве на разных этапах их развития (детальнее о теоретических основах современной балканистики см. [Соболев 2013]).

The paper deals with a text in Timok patoi from Eastern Serbia, presenting oral speech production of a female informant born in 1908 in the village of Petruša. The research question is as follows: what is the degree of the dialect coherence of the text, taking into account the parameters of its microvariation. The features of the “base” Timok patoi (in German – Grundmundart) were analyzed at all levels of the language structure and contrasted to the non-Timok features of other dialects of Serbian, including the Standard Serbian. Some neutral features, which don’t build any dialectal opposition, were also taken into account. The quantitative distribution of the Timok features versus non-Timok ones along the levels of the language structure is as follows: accent – 194/72 (ex., momk´a ~ m´omka ‘a guy’), phonetics and phonology– 177/52 (ex., v´ḷna ~ v´una ‘wool’), morphology, morphonology and morphosyntax – 193/20 (ex. ogled͡ʒ´aɲe ‘matchmaker’ ~ svir´at͡ʃi ‘musicians’; p´ostar ‘older’ ~ ran´ije ‘earlier’), syntax – 61/0, lexicon – 104/20 (gṛsnit͡ʃ´iʃt͡ʃe ~ konopλ´iʃte ‘hemp field’). Among 2294 tokens of the text, 728 bear a Timok feature and 164 – a non-Timok one; the convention is, that the features have the same “weight”. The probability to encounter a Timok feature in the text makes up every 3,15 tokens; one token has henceforth 0,32 of a Timok feature. The ratio of the dialect features, which are actualized in the informant’s speech production, to the whole amount of the tokens in the text, embodies the dialect coherence of the latter. The “base” dialect characteristics appear systematically, full enough, consequently and proportionally distributed over all levels of language structure. The paper works on criteria and parameters for the measurement standards, or etalons for texts in a dialect, creating a base for future comparison of doculects (texts reflecting speech production) in all existing forms of the Serbian language in the region. Advancement to machine analysis is possible in future. Text samples, transcribed in IPA, are attached.

"VOJVODA SERBO-MONTÉNÉGRINE"
L’article présenté ci-dessus renferme l’histoire de l’un de plus captivant titres protoslaves des personnes provenant du premier ordre dans la hiérarchie sociale. Ce titre dont la signification étymologique, non pas seulement dans la langue serbe, correspondait au commandant de l’armée a évolué ensuite vers le noble, le dignitaire de la cour, le seigneur, seconde commandant de l’armée après le souverain, par le responsable administratif et l’autorité tribale au Monténégro, jusqu’à l’animateur de mariage participant aux rites de noce serbes et monténégrins. L’ancien grade militaire slave pourrait être un emprunt lexical d’un grade germanique haritogo, du protogermanique herizogo ou de la langue grecque στρατηγός, στρατελάτής.
