Currently, power systems (PS) already accommodate a substantial penetration of DG and operate in competitive environments. In the future PS will have to deal with large-scale integration of DG and other distributed energy resources (DER), such as storage means, and provide to market agents the means to ensure a flexible and secure operation. This cannot be done with the traditional PS operation. SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a vital infrastructure for PS. Current SCADA adaptation to accommodate the new needs of future PS does not allow to address all the requirements. In this paper we present a new conceptual design of an intelligent SCADA, with a more decentralized, flexible, and intelligent approach, adaptive to the context (context awareness). Once a situation is characterized, data and control options available to each entity are re-defined according to this context, taking into account operation normative and a priori established contracts. The paper includes a case-study of using future SCADA features to use DER to deal with incident situations, preventing blackouts.

The multiple reconfiguration and the complexity of the modern production system lead to design intelligent monitoring aid systems. Accordingly, the use of neurofuzzy technics seems very promising. In this paper, we propose a new monitoring aid system composed by a dynamic neural network detection tool and a neuro-fuzzy diagnosis tool. Learning capabilities due to the neural structure permit us to update the monitoring aid system. The neuro-fuzzy network provides an abductive diagnosis. Moreover it takes into account the uncertainties on the maintenance knowledge by giving a fuzzy characterization of each cause. At the end, we illustrate the industrial usefulness of the proposed dynamic neuro-fuzzy monitoring system trough a flexible production system monitoring application.

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems control and monitor industrial and critical infrastructure functions, such as the electricity, gas, water, waste, railway and traffic. Recent attacks on SCADA systems highlight the need of a SCADA security testbed, which can be used to model real SCADA systems and study the effects of attacks on them. We propose the architecture of a modular SCADA testbed and describe our tool which mimics a SCADA network, monitors and controls real sensors and actuators using Modbus/TCP protocol. Using Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) scenarios we show how attackers can disrupt the operation of a SCADA system.

In some applications of real-time systems such as monitoring and control, calendar referencing plays a significant role. The system needs the precise year, month, day, hour, minute and second in order to function correctly. Generally, real-time systems are based on computers whose operating systems use the Gregorian calendar. The official calendar of some countries, however, is not based on the Gregorian calendar. To reduce the human errors and make the system friendlier, it is necessary to present the date in the local format. In this paper, the optimum method of time-keeping for a distributed real-time system is described and then a solar calendar called Khayyami is reviewed and a novel algorithm for conversion between Gregorian and Khayyami calendars is presented. Khayyami is the official calendar of Iran and Afghanistan and is used in surrounding areas such as the Central Asian countries and Kurdish area. In this paper the basic concepts of HMI (Human Machine Interface) & SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems is studied, and then interfacing it with PLC system. Industrial Burner Automation is being done which is based on PLC,HMI & SCADA with remote monitoring and energy conservation. Remote monitoring of field devices is being done with the Scada software and it gathers all the data from Plc module. Here HMI is being used to primarily control and monitor the industrial wood pellet burner. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is being used to control the speed of motor by PID control logic.. A P&I screen will be designed to be used for easy monitoring for the burner operator. A Process Trend and Data log will be available for finding the previous and current value of parameters. By Data Logging in SCADA all the data which will be gathered from data logging will be saved to a computer system.

The automatic sorting process is used to differentiate the products manufactured in an industry to further direct it towards packaging according to height. In the paper, products are compared using diffused beam type photo-electric sensor. In the paper the system based on conveyor belt model to sort the objects which are of ideal selected height is described. The control strategy for automating the sorting process which was earlier done by manual labour involving slow, inaccurate and erroneous outputs is implemented through programmable logic controller (PLC) as a solution to all these problems. In the paper, development of ladder logic program in MicroWIN software for the PLC which operates the pneumatic actuator for sorting the objects is described. It is found that HMI and SCADA using softwares WinCC Basic in TIA Portal and WinCC Professional respectively makes the model more user friendly and efficient with controls and trends on a single screen.

The aim of this paper is to present the process of water treatment in a thermal power plant (TPP) in the one hand, and an application of a supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) on the other hand. In fact, almost all critical industrial infrastructures and processes are managed remotely from central control rooms, using computers and communications networks. Thus, the architecture of the supervisory system and the different steps of the supervision application of the water treatment process of a TPP have been presented. Our contribution consists in programming and visualizing new parameters of the chemical analysis (pH and conductivity) of the water -steam cycle to a SCADA system. The achieved supervision application is going to facilitate the work of both laboratory and instrumentation agents of the water treatment process in the TPP.

Owners of industries traveling around the world need some system from where they can monitor and keep control of their industry remotely. Speedily advancing software technologies have made it possible to develop a new generation of Supervisory Control and Data-Acquisition (SCADA) system. This generation of SCADA is known as PROPOSED SCADA SYSTEMS. This paper present a concept of how industrial and commercial areas can be monitored and controlled via SCADA system from anywhere in the world on supported portable devices. Through Remote access of SCADA, the Remote Desktop Protocol (ROP) brings SCADA real-time and passes information to users. The presented solution provides reduced software costs while improving reliability. The system also allows Open Process Control (OPC) linkage between the controller and SCADA systems. An additional monitoring approach in this system is lP CAMERAS based online visual monitoring. Life videos of the industry and commercial area can be viewed from anywhere in the globe on the portable devices. The proposed concept is simulated on two prototype industrial plants 1) An automated Car Wash System and 2) Load Cell based luggage segregation. ABSTRAK` -Hingga saat ini (SCADA) merupakan sistem control data dan pengawasan digital yang sedang populer dan banyak diterapkan dalam berbagai bidang baik industri, perorangan, dan juga energi. Adanya dukungan perkembangan teknologi jaringan komunikasi data serta aplikasi sistem operasi yang mobile yang sudah dapat diterapkan di dalam perangkat handphone seperti Android, dengan dukungan teknologi didalamnya termasuk nirkabel, kemudahan akses data menjadi lebih terorganisir dengan menggunakan protokol Modbus. Dukungan Java untuk SCADA sudah mulai diberikan dengan adanya library open source yang bernama Java Modbus (Jamod) yang mendukung protokol Modbus dengan TCP/IP. Proses monitoring yang dijalankan tentu tidak optimal tanpa peran sistem untuk mencatat data yang ada melalui library yang berperan dalam proses pencatatan atas akuisisi data yaitu Opencsv. Dalam proses pengoperasian SCADA yang telah terkonsep dengan baik dengan Sistem Aplikasi Android tentunya dirancang dengan menu yang sederhana dan mudah dimengerti terutama untuk proses training yang efektif sebelum operator bekerja di lapangan. Dalam pendukung proses pelatihan SCADA yang efektif, penulis berinisiatif untuk menambahkan simulator pendukung input data yang bernama ModbusPal. Piranti lunak ini selain mempermudah pembelajaran juga diharapkan dapat menekan biaya atas pengadaan module perangkat keras yang dinilai memakan biaya yang tinggi juga konfigurasi yang menyita waktu. Diharapkan dengan adanya Skripsi ini bertujuan membuat aplikasi yang mampu melakukan pengendalian pengawasan dan juga akuisisi data yang baik dengan dukungan teknologi terbaru yang diharapkan dapat dikembangkan untuk pelatihan dan juga implementasi di lapangan. Metode yang digunakan pada skripsi ini adalah model proses extreme programming karena aplikasi yang akan dibuat tidak membutuhkan waktu yang lama (Agile method) dengan method pengetesan Blackbox testing. Inti dari skripsi ini yaitu terletak pada implementasi SCADA pada OS Android dengan menggunakan Library SCADA yaitu Jamod, transfer data menggunakan jaringan Nirkabel yang didukung protokol Modbus TCP/IP dengan simulator transmisi data menggunakan ModbusPal dengan library OpenCSV untuk menyimpan data yang terakuisisi dengan format file CSV. Data dan informasi yang ditampilkan pada aplikasi ini diharapkan dapat menjawab kendala implementasi SCADA yang dinilai cukup sulit terutama dalam pengaplikasian dengan teknologi terbaru untuk berbagai keperluan.

ÖZ Kentleşme, nüfus artışı ve artan gıda talebi nedeniyle suya her geçen gün daha fazla ihtiyaç duyulmakta; su kaynaklarının korunması ve optimum kullanımı da bu doğrultuda büyük önem taşımaktadır. Su kayıpları gelişmiş ülkelerde olduğu gibi Türkiye'nin su yönetiminde de ciddi bir gündem oluşturan ve önlemler alınmasını gerektiren bir alan olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu çerçevede 2014 yılında düzenlenen yönetmelik ile belediyelerin su kayıplarına yönelik teknolojik altyapılarını geliştirmeleri ve su kayıp oranlarını %25'e kadar indirmeleri bağlayıcı hükümler doğrultusunda hedeflenmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı büyükşehir belediyelerindeki su kayıp oranlarını ortaya koyarak belediyelerin, su kayıpları ile mücadele konusunda tercih ettikleri akıllı su teknolojilerinden biri olan SCADA sistemini kullanmaları sonucunda elde ettikleri "kazanımlarını ve sorunlarını" tespit etmektir. ABSTRACT Due to urbanization, population growth and increasing food demand, water is needed more and more every day. The protection and optimal utilization of water resources is also of great importance. In this context, water loss and leakage of water management in Turkey as it is in developed countries is considered as constituting a serious agenda and an area requiring measures to be taken. By a regulation in 2014, all the municipalities in Turkey are required to develop their technological infrastructure to reduce water losses. Also, all municipalities are now obliged to reduce water losses to a target level of 25% in drinking water distribution networks within a given time frame. The purpose of this study is to discuss the factors which may affect the performance of SCADA systems which the municipalities have preferred to employ to reduce water losses by highlighting current water loss ratios and identifying crucial problems. Strategic plans of metropolitan municipalities, the annual report of activities and loss of water resources are the main sources of data used in the study. The results show that reducing water losses is directly related to institutional, financial and infrastructural strength.

A SCADA system uses a number of remote terminal units (RTUs) for collecting field data and sending it back to a master station, via a communication system. The master station displays the acquired data and allows the operator to perform remote control tasks. An RTU is a microprocessor based standalone data acquisition control unit. As the RTUs work in harsh environment, the processor inside the RTU is susceptible to random faults. If the processor fails, the equipment or process being monitored by it will become inaccessible. This paper proposes a fault tolerant scheme to untangle the RTU's failure issue. According to the scheme, every RTU will have at least two processing elements. In case of either processor's failure, the surviving processor will take over the tasks of the failed processor to perform its tasks. With this approach, an RTU remain functional despite the failure of the processor inside the RTU. Reliability and Availability modeling of the proposed fault tolerant scheme have presented.

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems have become essential to many industries around the world. Nowadays, SCADA systems are controlling many critical infrastructures such as power grids, mega factories, water treatment systems, and even nuclear power plants. As a result, SCADA systems have become very attractive targets for malicious attacks. In this paper, we show a test-bed that we have developed to detect vulnerabilities within SCADA protocols against internal attacks in order to find out how easy it is to bypass security measures in such protocols. Furthermore, we have tested SCADA components to assess their vulnerabilities against the following attacks: Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, replay attacks, cryptographic attacks, and fragmentation attacks. Our results indicate that SCADA protocols and components are very vulnerable, and hence it is of paramount importance to find immediate solutions to these vulnerabilities.

Previous research for detecting incipient wind turbine failures, using condition monitoring algorithms, concentrated on wind turbine Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) signals, such as power output, wind speed and bearing temperatures, using power-curve and temperature relationships. However, very little research effort has been made on wind turbine SCADA alarms. When wind turbines are operating in significantly sized wind farms, these alarm triggers are overwhelming for operators or maintainers alike because of large number occurring in a 10 min SCADA period. This paper considers these alarms originating in two large populations of modern onshore wind turbines over a period of 1-2 years. First, an analysis is made on where the alarms originate. Second, a methodology for prioritizing the alarms is adopted from an oil and gas industry standard to show the seriousness of the alarm data volume. Third, two methods of alarm analysis, time-sequence and probability-based, are proposed and demonstrated on the data from one of the wind turbine populations, considering pitch and converter systems with known faults. The results of this work show that alarm data require relatively little storage yet provide rich condition monitoring information. Both the time-sequence and probability-based analysis methods have the potential to rationalize and reduce alarm data, providing valuable fault detection, diagnosis and prognosis from the conditions under which the alarms are generated. These methods should be developed and integrated into an intelligent alarm handling system for wind farms, aimed at improving wind turbine reliability to reduce downtime, increase availability and leading to a well-organized maintenance schedule.

SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) networks control much of the industrialised nations production and supply complexes. Various government reports and investigations have highlighted the vulnerability of these systems. Many of these systems are on private networks which are increasingly being connected to systems that are accessible from other networks such as the Internet. SCADA systems have unique security and operational requirements. However, many of the most basic security measures are missing in these networks. This examines some of these issues and proposes some technologies that could help secure these networks from attack.

Integration of information and communication technologies with the traditional of electric power infrastructures and creation of an interoperable, scalable, and flexible smart grid will require numerous technological innovations and advancements. The purpose of this paper is to take a detailed look at the various technologies which may be utilized in the data transmission for the smart grid and the problems or difficulties that must be overcome to effectively use them. A variety of wireless systems are analyzed and we discuss the security of these mediums as privacy remains a major obstacle for implementing smart grid technology.

This paper presents a hybrid off-grid power system consisting of two PV Arrays, two generator sets, two charge controllers, two bi-directional inverters and two battery banks. This paper outlines different topologies for optimum energy extraction from solar panels, minimization of generator fuel consumption, and assurance of higher reliability through redundancy. Controller Area Network (CAN) messages are used as the communication interfaces between key components and also as the interface with data monitoring system. This paper also dwells on key challenges of a hybrid off-grid power system such as generator starting, inrush current management, parallel operation of inverters, voltage regulation, load sharing, load shedding, load sequencing, and seamless power source switching. Future possibility of integrating SCADA capabilities to such a hybrid system to realize a smart microgrid is also mentioned in the paper.

The automatic sorting process is used to differentiate the products manufactured
in an industry to further direct it towards packaging according to height. In the paper,
products are compared using diffused beam type photo-electric sensor. In the paper
the system based on conveyor belt model to sort the objects which are of ideal selected
height is described. The control strategy for automating the sorting process which was
earlier done by manual labour involving slow, inaccurate and erroneous outputs is
implemented through programmable logic controller (PLC) as a solution to all these

MODBUS is a serial communication protocol developed and published by the MODICON in 1979. Most familiar usage of the MODBUS communication protocol is the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). The Aim of the research is to retrieve electrical parameters from the power analyzer devices and display data using the MODBUS communication protocol. A SCADA is software which takes readings from sensors and executes some action on a specific process located remotely, due to the danger that might occur by doing in-situ measures. Because of the high cost of SCADA systems, this article shows a step by step procedure for the development of a SCADA system based on Arduino and XBEE. The open hardware platform, Arduino, is used as a replacement of a data acquisition system of National Instruments. A complete compatibility with LabView and a drop in the final price of the SCADA system is achieved using Arduino. An Xbee module is added to the system, in order to make remote measurements and making decision according to these. As a result, a versatile device that is able to work remotely with different kind of sensors is completed. Providing useful clean signals for later processing, allowing to save a record of the measures, by means of a table or a line graph.

This paper presents the development of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system testbed used for cybersecurity research. The testbed consists of a water storage tank’s control system, which is a stage in the process of water treatment and distribution. Sophisticated cyber-attacks were conducted against the testbed. During the attacks, the network traffic was captured, and features were extracted from the traffic to build a dataset for training and testing different machine learning algorithms. Five traditional machine learning algorithms were trained to detect the attacks: Random Forest, Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes and KNN. Then, the trained machine learning models were built and deployed in the network, where new tests were made using online network traffic. The performance obtained during the training and testing of the machine learning models was compared to the performance obtained during the online deployment of these models in the network. ...
