RECONSTRUCTING A NEW STORY OF NURSING:
CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF NURSING TEXTBOOKS USING
RIANE EISLER’S PARTNERSHIP PARADIGM


ABSTRACT

Paradigms and stories shape our perception of the world around us; they frame the past and suggest possible futures. Nursing fundamental textbooks initiate socialization for and profoundly impact the self-identity and practice of future nurses; therefore, the paradigms and ideologies within the texts must be critically evaluated. Chapters describing the history of nursing offer powerful stories and images that initiate the development of nursing identity in novices.
Social theorist Riane Eisler (1987, 2002) describes human history as a persistent conflict between two paradigms or patterns of social organization. Her cultural transformation theory identifies ideological differences between dominator and partnership paradigms.
The first objective of the present study was to determine if nursing fundamental textbooks in the United States use the story of the history of nursing to support a dominator paradigm. The history of nursing was critiqued in eight current nursing fundamental textbooks. Content and narrative analysis revealed that dominator values and themes were consistently used while partnership themes were weak or absent.
The second objective of the study was to reconstruct a new story of nursing by illuminating historic exemplars of partnership and collaboration. Recent nursing research has demonstrated patient outcomes improve with implementation of collaborative care, yet new nurses have limited exposure to models of collaboration.
The writings of Mary Seacole (1857/2005), Lillian Wald (1915), Margaret Sanger (1923/1971), Sister Elizabeth Kenny (Kenny & Ostenso, 1943), and others were analyzed for themes that support partnership and collaboration. Content analysis also revealed themes of the interconnection of humans and nature, the importance of a global perspective, the use of multiple ways of knowing, the value of astute observation, and the necessity for medicine to be individualized. Recovering lost threads of the nursing story will improve self-identity and empower nurses to be active partners in the creation and delivery of sustainable models of healthcare.

Jazz has a unique character and history that finds analogy in matters of life and death. Its spontaneous and courageous aspect provides compelling models for leadership and social creativity and has a procreative capacity that imitates the eternal cycles of birth and extinction. Jazz’s transformative quality allows reinvention and reinterpretation of old and new forms and can inspire the creation of shared convictions. Its ebb and flow through mentors and griots is a model for preservation and sustainability. Yet, jazz’s emphasis on the moment recalls the brevity of life, the importance of living life to its fullest and the inevitability and finality of death. Deeply embedded in its philosophy and culture, are the historical lessons for transforming adversity into freedom and joy, and for discovering a synchronistic rhythm that makes meaning of “man’s inhumanity to man.” The Buddhist principles of non-violence, dialogue and compassion are the foundations of jazz and form the basis of human life’s highest integrity.

This paper begins by examining domination as something human beings have “inherited" through recursive processes that can potentially be altered through creation and implementation of new myths. Applying Riane Eisler's model of "hierarchies of actualization" to the concept of egalitarian mentorship and mutual empowerment (based on giving and caring), there follows a discussion on how when such ethical considerations are present, creativity flourishes as do conviction and human capacity. Driven by a heightened sense of mission toward the happiness of humanity as taught by exemplary mentors, human beings become more capable of inspiring and enhancing their own lives and those of others. Exploring the partnership template in my own daily life, I conclude with how I see myself modeling partnership in the future. Examining my own lived-embodied experience and how it has brought me to value life as well as discover in music and my voice a powerful vehicle for delivering my message, I propose to contribute to an evolutionary consciousness that can ultimately transform myths of fear and domination to myths of life and partnership.

Engaging in the ongoing challenge to surmount and triumph over every adversity is the key to establishing the conviction and commitment to help others do the same. The sharing of experiences of winning over one's own limitations can serve as one of the most courageous and effective forms of mentoring. Alice Eagly's research indicates women are more prone to transformational leadership in the areas of coaching and collaboration. Could women’s tendency toward ethical compassion coupled with a capacity to persevere and endure be at the root of this finding? This paper begins by examining the transformative role of women in leadership as courageous mentors, then describes qualities that define courageous leadership, and finally shares some of the research pointing to women’s transformative models as coalition builders, including some Buddhist views. The shifts from domination to partnership while working for the "greater good" toward ethical, transformational and authentic leadership are suggested as the wave of the future. These shifts will be the direct result of women's new leadership roles in an age of increasing dependence on soft power where wisdom-based tools emerge out of courageous and compassionate mentoring.

In concert with its creation of Capitalism’s Invisible Army, LAWCAP’s decision at the close of the 1940s to start World War III in order to keep capitalism in business resulted in our illegitimate corporate state both being wedded to denial of increasing global overheat, one of the vilest deceptions in history, and our unaccountable U.S. Intelligence Police operating beyond the strictures of law, as formal federal policy, by daily committing several hundred crimes including terrorism, assassination, torture, and systematic violations of human rights. A primary root of this mind-bending criminal government lawlessness is a direct result and outgrowth of the assassination of President Kennedy by key elements within our Intelligence Police. Our law-breaking, illegitimate government continues to exponentially expand its death operations via policies carried out by CIA and Pentagon-based funding. For our species to survive this evolutionary moment, it is imperative to accelerate the shift from this collapsing dominator system to one based on partnership. As co-creators of our own evolution, we can choose the alternative of breakthrough rather than breakdown.
Willful U.S. criminal inaction on the ecological crisis threatening Life Security throughout Mother Earth requires non-violent rebellion to change course away from the dead-end future of a mass extinction event while determining what options still exist to be acted upon in the face of this unfolding crisis era of ecological emergency we are by day sinking evermore deeply into. The requirement for this regenerative process of collective involvement in a truly democratic dynamic to determine best strategies to deal with and respond to the climate and ecological emergency becoming evermore dire can be a driver and catalyst for accelerating the shift from domination to partnership.

When global and interdisciplinary scholars share a field of inquiry, terms must be defined so that there is a common understanding of key concepts to guide research. Similarly, applied knowledge requires accepted definitions of terms so that a cohesive message can be disseminated. The “Glossary for Cultural Transformation: The Language of Partnership and Domination” defines key terms related to cultural transformation and the partnership/domination continuum, to provide a resource for research, practice, and community applications of Riane Eisler’s partnership paradigm. According to the biocultural partnership-dominator lens as expounded by Riane Eisler, this article studies the echoes and analogies between the opus alchymicum and the instruments of self-growth and transformation found in Jung's The Red Book and Jill Mellick's profound, insightful and exquisite The Red Book Hours. Eisler's method is significantly interrelational and systemic, it supersedes traditional binary oppositions and offers an interesting correlation with alchemy. Mellick's monumental The Red Book Hours is not only a profound scholarly study of Jung's own extraordinary Red Book, but also a multifaceted, dynamic and living work which sheds light on the process of Self-analysis as a breakthrough towards wholeness.

"Conventional categories of creativity are being deconstructed after the so-called postmodern debate. This article takes this process deeper, to what we will show is the hidden subtext of gender underlying how creativity has been socially constructed.
It also proposes a more contextualized approach to creativity that takes into account both its individual and social dimensions and how this relates to what Eisler (1987) has called a partnership rather than dominator model of society."

The aim of this paper is to show how the poetry and art of Caribbean writer Derek Walcott (1930-2017) tends to manifest and substantiate the desirable cultural transformation promoted by the work of the American anthropologist and scholar Riane Eisler. The recognition and the exaltation of symbols connected to the feminine world stand at the core of Walcott's masterpiece Omeros. In a creative mutual dialogue between different genres and identities, the Caribbean author materialises Eisler's attempts to forge a type of society based on a new partnership ethic. In a second perspective, this paper analyses how Walcott's work opens the path to possible creative interdisciplinary approaches in the world of the arts. In my own contribution, as a professional dancer and choreographer, I have tried to " give voice " through movements to some episodes relating to the feminine included in Omeros.

One of the greatest challenges of modern times is how to create and replicate new myths and images and stand up with courage resisting in civil disobedience all unjust authority that continues to uphold violence. In this paper, written immediately after viewing the 1970 movie, Patton, I argue for women to come together and refuse to allow war any longer. I appeal to all common sense, hope, ethics and responsible citizenry, and propose that we reclaim our common humanity, restore the peace and harmony that is our natural human birthright, and pave a new path of peaceful coexistence for future generations.

Humanity is on the threshold of recognizing the fundamental error in its view on life and death. Both death as well as active life is necessary to the vital formation of a larger, more essential whole. Now, with clear, pragmatic ideas, applying an analysis of the sociology of knowledge and change as it pertains to matters of life and death, Carol Simpson focuses on ways in which we can step outside death’s traditional frameworks and limitations. Discussing death as well as topics related to death, such as birth, aging, the elderly and war, Simpson examines cultural differences and attitudes and offers varying perspectives including the Buddhist view, drawing sophisticated and compelling implications and conclusions. She applies the lenses of eight key contemporary social scientists: Edgar Morin, Kenneth Gergen, Edward Stewart and Milton Bennett, Mary Catherine Bateson, Edith Doyle McCarthy, Philip Slater, and Piotr Sztompka, adding the perspective of Buddhism’s Lotus Sutra as posited by Shakyamuni, Nichiren, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda, and especially contemporary Buddhist philosopher, peacebuilder, educator and poet, Daisaku Ikeda. Simpson, like Ikeda, concludes that to construct a more humanistic and sustainable view of life, it is first of all crucial to establish a culture which correctly positions death in its larger living context and which assigns as its essential component an awareness of the all encompassing eternity of life.

Through its delineation of the patterns of history, macrohistory gives a structure to the fanciful visions of futurists. Macrohistory gives us the weight of history, balancing the pull of the image of the future. Yet, like futures studies, it seeks to transform past, present and future, not merely reflect upon social space and time. Drawing from the book Macrohistory and Macrohistorians [Galtung, J. and Inayatullah, S. (eds), Praeger, New York, 1997], this article links macrohistory with futures studies. It takes the views of over 20 macrohistorians and asks what they offer to the study of alternative futures.
