Polish Media

Odpowiedzialność mediów to temat, któremu na co dzień poświęca się w Polsce niewiele uwagi. Szeroko dyskutowanym czynią go dopiero poważne kryzysy, takie jak tzw. afera taśmowa wywołana w czerwcu 2014 roku przez „Wprost”. Przy jej okazji zastanawiano się, czy redakcja tygodnika postąpiła odpowiedzialnie (bo ujawniła ważne dla opinii publicznej informacje), czy też raczej nieodpowiedzialnie (bo zdestabilizowała sytuację w państwie). Był to więc spór dotykający priorytetów w definicji zawodu dziennikarza – „służby społeczeństwu i państwu”. Jako że odpowiedzialność mediów można uznać za proporcjonalną do ich znaczenia, warto w tym kontekście przyjrzeć się retoryce i praktyce „Gazety Wyborczej” (dalej skrót: GW) – najważniejszego nietabloidowego i niekonserwatywnego dziennika społeczno-politycznego w Polsce – przedstawić sposób, w jaki rozumie ona dziennikarską odpowiedzialność i zestawić go z teorią (doktryną) społecznej odpowiedzialności prasy (mediów). Przedmiotem rozważań będzie przede wszystkim kluczowy dla odpowiedzialności wymiar etyczny, nie zaś kwestie prawne, jako że dotyczą one nie danego medium, a ram, w których ono funkcjonuje. W pracy wykorzystano metodę analizy treści i metodę historyczną. Badanie przeprowadzono w oparciu o strategię indukcyjną. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono teorię społecznej odpowiedzialności mediów. Rozdział drugi opisuje odpowiedzialność dziennikarstwa według GW. W podsumowaniu sformułowano wnioski z badania.

The study aims to describe the main lines of political division between Polish media and journalists characterized by a high degree of polarization and politicization. My research makes use of content (quantitative) and discourse (qualitative) analysis of two profiled web portals: wPolityce.pl (right-wing) and naTemat.pl (liberal). The focus is on publications addressing the topics of media and journalists (metajournalism) from 2016 to 2019 (with the conservative government’s ascension to power marking the turning point). The main research interest centers on the following particular elements of the analyzed texts: discussions about polarization, the assigning of political and party affiliations to the media, the framing effect applied to the media and journalists, thematic frames used against the “hostile camp”, and language demonstrating Polish media polarization. The present analysis contributes a cognitive insight into the political and ideological discourse that the Polish media are currently involved in.

Prawo prasowe definiuje dziennikarzy jako osoby zajmujące się redagowaniem, tworzeniem lub przygotowywaniem materiałów prasowych, pozostające w stosunku pracy z redakcją albo zajmujące się taką działalnością na rzecz i z upoważnienia redakcji. Jednocześnie ustawa z 1984 roku jasno określa zadania i obowiązki stawiane przed profesją dziennikarską, do których należy m.in. „służba społeczeństwu i państwu” (czyli poświęcenie się im i działalność podporządkowaną ich dobru i interesowi).
Dziennikarstwo przez wiele dziesiątków lat było sposobem zarabiania pieniędzy, ale także swoistym stylem życia i powołaniem. Z różnych kierunków płyną jednak opinie, że czasy misyjnego dziennikarstwa dawno minęły. Współczesny dziennikarz powinien umiejętnie i szybko docierać do faktów oraz dysponować taką techniką pisania, aby informacje zebrane i wybrane były dla odbiorcy strawą łatwą do przyswojenia. Ryszard Kapuściński przyznał: „Żadne koncerny, żadne fabryki samochodów czy ropa naftowa nie przynoszą takich zysków jak handel informacją. To dziś najbardziej dochodowy biznes”. Coraz trudniej pogodzić misję, służbę, społeczne powinności dziennikarza z warunkiem rentowności medium, które go zatrudnia.
Tytuł, którym opatrzono niniejszy tom, odzwierciedla napięcie między sferą posłannictwa, wciąż oczekiwanego od dziennikarzy, a stricte zawodowymi standardami (one też zresztą podlegają dynamicznym zmianom). Niniejszą książką wpisujemy się w potrzebę wszechstronnej analizy profesji dziennikarskiej. Świadomi faktu, że do istotnych przeobrażeń mediów masowych w Polsce doszło po 1989 roku, interesujący nas temat rozpatrywaliśmy w możliwie szerokim przedziale czasowym. Czytelnikom oferujemy opracowania dotyczące polskiego środowiska dziennikarskiego, jednak równie ważne wydały się opisy doświadczeń dziennikarzy zatrudnianych przez media zagraniczne i prezentacje rozwiązań obowiązujących poza naszym krajem.

Rozważania zaprezentowane w tym rozdziale dotyczą próby klasyfikacji czasopism wydawanych w Szczecinie, głownych tendencji panujących na rynku tych periodyków oraz perspektyw ich rozwoju. Czasopisma wydawane w Szczecinie: typologia, przemiany, perspektywy rozwoju 7 ogólnopolskich periodyków. Zaznaczenie tego rozróżnienia w sytuacji, kiedy omawiane są czasopisma wydawane w Szczecinie wydaje się jednak zasadne. Powyższe uwagi nie zmieniają faktu, że większość badanych pism miała charakter lokalny.

Media researchers have been interested in the problem of media convergence since the 1980s. But the huge wave of publications, conferences and discussions about media convergence began just after the publication of Henry Jenkins’ book Convergence Culture. Where old and new media collide. It brought questions about the realm of the concept, typologies and previous research. The aim of this text is to answer the questions: What is media convergence and what types of convergence could we specify in media studies? Before the presentation of the various contexts and dimensions of media convergence, some sources and the history of the concept will be presented as well as outcomes of recent media convergence research.

This article explores the changes in news agency mechanisms that accompanied the restructuring of Europe after World War I. During the interwar period, a new form of negotiation replaced the pre-World War I conception of English, French and German spheres of influence with a more cooperative vision of the collection and dissemination of news. I argue that the private and business-oriented nature of news agency cooperation enabled it to outlast better-known political attempts at multilateralism. Indeed, it often produced more concrete results by offering different incentives for cooperation to all involved from large global agencies, such as Reuters, down to the small agencies of new Central and Eastern European nation-states. Overall, the agencies' cooperation until the outbreak of World War II suggests alternative periodizations of the interwar period than the division into a fairly internationalist 1920s followed by the increasing bilateralism of the 1930s.

STRESZCZENIE
Konwergencja mediów stanowi przedmiot zainteresowania medioznawców od lat osiemdziesiątych. JednakŜe to dopiero przełomowa książka Henry’ego Jenkinsa, Kultura konwergencji… wywołała istną falę publikacji, konferencji i dyskusji nad tym zjawiskiem, budząc pytania o zakres pojęcia, typologie i prowadzone dotąd badania. Celem poniższego tekstu jest odpowiedź na pytania: na czym polega konwergencja oraz jakie jej typy wyróżnia się w refleksji medioznawczej. Zanim zaprezentowane zostaną poszczególne konteksty i wymiary konwergencji, przedstawione zostaną źródła i historia
pojęcia, jak również stan badań nad tym zjawiskiem.

The recent developments in Ukraine known as Euromaidan or Eurorevolution pushed to the foreground the problem of what Europe is for its East and how it is seen there. This paper points out to how various narratives of Europe have inhabited media discourses in Ukraine during the 2013-2014 mass protests, also taken in a comparative perspective with Poland and Russia. The three are the counties that, given their multiple differences and similarities in their histories, cultures and social structures, make an almost ideal case for comparison (just as their relations have been defining to the structure of the region). The scholars of Central and Eastern Europe have also long noticed that the place of Europe in post-Cold War national mythologies of different countries varies widely. In perhaps the most dramatic examples, Poland rethought itself as "the somehow decentred heart of Catholic Europe" (Dayan & Katz, 1994, p. 166), while Russia gave reasons to conclude it "leaves the West" (Trenin, 2006, p. 87) and Ukraine stuck with its view of Europe as a normative example (Orlova, 2010). This paper will present the results of qualitative analysis based on an open coding approach that discerns different narratives of Europe in the media discourses of the Polish, Russian and Ukrainian press. The focus of the analysis rests primarily on the most important and prestigious news outlets (Rzeczpospolita and Gazeta wyborcza in Poland; Novaya gazeta and Kommersant in Russia; Dzerkalo tyzhnia and Korrespondent in Ukraine) but also includes the most prestigious online blog platforms where opinion leaders set the principal frames for narrating Europe; such as Ukraine's most read blogs section at Ukrayins'ka Pravda, Russia's Snob.ru and Poland's Natemat.pl. This will arguably give a more panoramic overview of what could be thought of as the three countries' public discourses. The key idea originating from this analysis is that in the analyzed papers the word "Europe", overloaded with multiple meanings, functions as a semantically empty figure of speech; Europe is not "what", it is "how". Broadly speaking, it is most likely a metonymy in which something is called by the name of something else that is closely associated with it instead of being called by the name of its own. For Poland, a part of the EU, this part can more easily substitute the whole in a synecdoche (which is often seen as a form of metonymy): it typically generalizes particular European countries to represent entire Europe. Ukraine's press prefers more conventional metonymy, using Europe as shorthand for the values and practices it sees as important, useful and vital for its own survival, just because the values originated in Europe and are associated with it. Russia pushes the limits of metonymy further to the brink of metaphor where anything at all can substitute for anything else, therefore facilitating the construction of the stories of decline-and-fall or epic battle that are metaphoric if hyperbolic in nature.

Iwona Guść in her contribution “Polish Film Culture in Transition: On the ‘Private Films’ of Andrzej Kondratiuk (1985-1996)” looks at the tensions that can arise between the structures of small national cinemas and “small” forms of filmmaking. Taking her cues from Yuri Tsivian’s seminal reflections on technological innovation and changing reception patterns (which seem relevant not only to early cinema but also to the new forms of spectatorship in the age of YouTube), Guść traces the fascinating career of director Andrzej Kondratiuk who in the second half of the 1980s deliberately turned from being a state filmmaker into an independent filmmaker and developed a radically personal “home movie” aesthetic, using his extended family as actors. Whereas Kondratiuk’s small and personal cinema was initially met with extreme hostility because his aesthetic confused the “ontological status of the characters” and questioned the codified line that separates filmic fact and fiction, the slow acceptance of Kondratiuk into the pantheon of Polish cinema in the 1990s, as Guść explains, points to a fundamental reconfiguration of the private and the public sphere in post-socialist Poland.

Poland, like other societies in Europe and Asia, is struggling with how to address new issues of multiculturalism and minority sub-cultures. How will it guarantee equal citizenship to ‘non-Polish’ Poles and render that divisive distinction redundant?

The research takes the issue of media content distribution through traditional media – newspaper, television and radio. The author checks whether Snapchat can be used as an alternative distribution channel. The first chapter presents traditional methods of distribution, the second chapter outlines current trends in online content consumption and puts the topic in broader spectrum of mobile internet. In the third chapter the author characterize Snapchat presenting its functionality and basic history. The last chapter is the result of an observation and activity analysis for selected media in the period from November 2015 to April 2016.

This paper is an attempt to comprehensively study Polish national identity discourse, and examine to what extent it automated framing of newspaper coverage of a protracted event such as the Ukraine crisis in the period from late November 2013 until mid-March 2014. Lining out the key tensions of the discursive position of Poland as between 'Europe' and 'the East', the analysis will show, by turning its focus to Ukraine, that the Oriental discourse of Eastern Europe did not negatively impact upon Polish foreign policy towards Ukraine. Instead, the paradigm for the same had been the Eastern mission exercised through European soft power, and this, as argued, was especially visible during the ongoing Ukraine crisis. The findings of the study of coverage in Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita suggest that the papers accept the Polish diplomatic stance on the Ukrainian cause as national mission. Artykuł składa się z dwóch podstawowych części: teoretycznej i empirycznej. W pierwszej z nich opisane zostały podstawowe cechy komunikacji erystycznej, relacje na linii logika–retoryka–erystyka i 10 wybranych technik erystycznych. Część druga zawiera raport z krytycznej analizy fragmentów dyskusji przeprowadzonych w programach publicystycznych emitowanych przez dwa dominujące w Polsce kanały informacyjne – TVP Info i TVN 24.
Analiza miała na celu przede wszystkim określenie sposobów erystycznych stosowanych w praktyce komunikacyjnej osób publicznych odpowiedzialnych za kreowanie wizerunku znaczących polskich aktorów politycznych. Wybrano dwa fragmentaryczne pod względem statystycznym, ale istotne jakościowo materiały audiowizualne z dwóch konkurencyjnych światopoglądowo stacji telewizyjnych:

The Internet non-use brings social and economic exclusion as consequences. At the same time Internet is a medium that is still a domain of young people. In Poland, there is a huge diversity in the Internet use depending on the age: the largest category of people not using the network, thus most at risk of digital exclusion, are those over 45 years of age. The research conducted among persons belonging to
this age category that study the most popular Polish web portal onet.pl is to show that the website is not directed toward people over 45 and that the barriers resulting from maladjusted content, intrusive advertising and the way information is presented restrict the access to the benefits of global network to these people and cause their marginalization as information recipients. Moreover, the sense of
exclusion among the respondents and their expectations towards the Internet and web portals as sources of information will be verified.

Docudrama or semi-documentary series are television programs that imitate documentary style and form while depicting fiction and using actors. They appeared in Poland in 2010 and were produced for and featured on the most popular Polish mainstream television channels, Polsat and TVN. Three years later and their popularity has yet to peak.

The plots are based on the stories of seemingly ordinary people dealing with various difficulties that range from everday hassles to epic life changing situations. Production is straightforward, actors are non-professional, or portray themselves as such, and storylines target neither subtlety nor depth. 

The success of the semi-documentary series can be seen as a response to the economic and, perhaps, cultural crises of recent times. They certainly satisfy a particular need within many viewers for easy entertainment that is sensational and engaing yet lightweight and undemanding. While the genre’s lack of sophistication and its audience’s facile appreciation may draw criticism, they have attracted much attention beyond their first instance popularity, instigating various vlogs, parody videos on YouTube, Facebook fanpages and other instances of media and interaction. This paper will look at the causes underlying this recent cultural phenomenon and consider the extent of its reach.

The place of Europe in post-Cold War national mythologies of different countries varies widely. In three arguably most dramatic examples, Poland rethought itself as “the somehow decentered heart of Catholic Europe” (Dayan & Katz, 1994, p. 166), while Russia gave reasons to conclude it
“leaves the West” (Trenin, 2006, p. 87) and Ukraine stuck with its view of Europe as a normative example (Orlova, 2010, p. 26). To what extent does this remain true if one is to look empirically at the discourses that currently inhabit news media? This paper points out, on the example of the public
discourses around Euromaidan, to how narratives of Europe are instrumentalized in political discussions in the three countries that followed very different paths since the collapse of the communist bloc. The presentation includes results of qualitative analysis based on an open coding
approach; the focus rests on the most prestigious news outlets (Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta wyborcza; Izvestia, Kommersant; Dzerkalo tyzhnia, Korrespondent) but also includes important online blog platforms.

Because of the temperature of the political conflict in Poland, some problems that should be solved after a thorough discussion of the subject matter– leading to constructive actions acceptable to everyone – become instead instruments of media attacks on the democratically elected government, to the detriment of Polish society. One example is crimes against foreigners. Fortunately, they are rare and Poland is still a relatively safe place, compared with Western European countries. However, those crimes, presented in newspapers and popular television channels as proofs of the increase in nationalism, xenophobia, and chauvinism, fuel the fight of the opposition against the rightist-conservative government. This picture produced by media is confronted with crime statistics.

This paper assesses the Polish search for a new model of press freedom that can, to paraphrase Warsaw Voice editor, Andrzej Jonas, take Poland from its Communist roots to its heavenly dream without getting lost on the way.  The study considers first the historical and theoretical contexts to the Polish quest for a new model of free expression.  Drawing on intensive interview with more than a dozen Polish journalists--from Poland's largest circulation newspaper, Gazeta Wyborcza, to Trybuna, one the Polish Communist Party's official newspaper, Trybuna Ludu (Tribune of the People)--this study then examines the distinctive features of the Polish media and their need for a distinctive Polish model.  The final section analyzes Poland's first substantive revision of media policy, the new Broadcast Act, and its implication for an emerging press model.  Inherent in this discussion will be consideration of the relative utility of Western models of democratic communication for post-Communist nations.

Pierwszymi nadawcami newsa o wypadku lotniczym z 10 kwietnia 2010 r. były telewizja Polsat oraz Agencja Reutera 1. W stosunkowo krótkim czasie dziennikarzom udało się ustalić, że żadna z osób przebywających na pokładzie tupolewa nie przeżyła katastrofy: 9.23-Świat obiega wstrząsająca wiadomość. […] prawdopodobnie nikt nie przeżył katastrofy. […] 10.36-Polski MSZ potwierdza oficjalnie: Lech Kaczyński i Jego żona Maria nie żyją. 10.43-Polska w żałobie. 2 Błyskawicznie na wydarzenie z sobotniego poranka zareagowali wydawcy prasy drukowanej, zarówno ogólnopolskiej, jak i regionalnej, przygotowując wydania specjalne swoich gazet i dystrybuując je bezpłatnie po południu 3 oraz w niedzielę. Wobec braku pełniejszych danych, działając pod presją czasu i emocji, wydawcy musieli wykazać większą niż zwykle kreatywność, dlatego też w komponowaniu specjalnych wydań "Gazety Wyborczej" czy "Faktu" 4 wykorzystywano fotografie archiwalne, listy nazwisk, schematy TU-154 M, zrzuty ekranów utrwalające zawartość stron internetowych 5 , pozyskane ad hoc komentarze itp. Niektóre z tych publikacji były dalekie od edytorskiej doskonałości (zob. ciemne prostokąty w miejscu fotografii portretowych części ofiar katastrofy w "Rzeczpospolitej" z 12 kwietnia 2010 r.). Autor rozdziału przedstawia zjawisko dystansu ironicznego w grach wideo i analizuje jego przykłady w grach "Wiedźmin" i "Wiedźmin 2: Zabójcy królów". Istotą omawianego tu zabiegu jest wytworzenie w obrębie gry nowego modelu metakomunikacji, w którym bohaterowie mają charakter raczej narzędzi niż podmiotów. Autor wskazuje, że dystans ironiczny wiąże się ze zmniejszeniem immersji, ale jednocześnie dostarcza graczowi innego rodzaju przyjemności - głównie związanej z komizmem. Autorzy gier z cyklu Wiedźmin - choć w głównej mierze dążą do wywołania w graczu immersji - bardzo często stwarzają warunki do wywołania dystansu ironicznego, co stanowi charakterystyczny rys tej serii.

Decalogue 5 appears to be overtly preoccupied with the specific political issue of capital punishment, yet it is equally concerned with the larger moral contexts which are inherently social - the Law, as the film decrees, manifests our responsibility to each other. While Kieslowski presents us with a murder paradigm which is fundamentally depersonalised, moral choice remains intimately subjective, even if the motivations of the characters are obscured here. The emphasis placed on observation and dissociation throughout Decalogue 5 implicitly critiques the emotional distances wrought between Modern subjects. From the outset, the narrative is framed as Piotr’s story, and the journey he undertakes (along with the audience) moves from an ideal of clinical objectivity - the detached moral frameworks of the Law - to the final annunciation of the personal ("I abhor it"). This article seeks to investigate that journey, highlighting the complexities of these seemingly irreconcilable positions.

Niniejszy artykuł to studium przypadku. Opisane zostały analizy konkretnej medialnej dezinformacji dotyczącej środków prewencji służących redukcji transmisji koronawirusa w Polsce. Wskazano zwłaszcza na pewną odmienność stanowisk, która wywołała społeczny spór i chaos dotyczący kwestii użycia maseczek jako jednego z głównych czynników chroniących przed zachorowaniem na SARS-CoV-2.
