Making News at The New York Times is the first in-depth portrait of the nation’s, if not the world's, premier newspaper in the digital age. It presents a lively chronicle of months spent in the newsroom observing daily conversations, meetings, and journalists at work. We see Page One meetings, articles developed for online and print from start to finish, the creation of ambitious multimedia projects, and the ethical dilemmas posed by social media in the newsroom. Here, the reality of creating news in a 24/7 instant information environment clashes with the storied history of print journalism, and the tensions present a dramatic portrait of news in the online world. This news ethnography brings to bear the overarching value clashes at play in a digital news world. The book argues that emergent news values are reordering the fundamental processes of news production. Immediacy, interactivity, and participation now play a role unlike any time before, creating clashes between old and new. These values emerge from the social practices, pressures, and norms at play inside the newsroom as journalists attempt to negotiate the new demands of their work. Immediacy forces journalists to work in a constant deadline environment, an ASAP world, but one where the vaunted traditions of yesterday's news still appear in the next day's print paper. Interactivity, inspired by the new user-computer directed capacities online and the immersive Web environment, brings new kinds of specialists into the newsroom, but exacts new demands upon the already taxed workflow of traditional journalists. And at time where social media presents the opportunity for new kinds of engagement between the audience and media, business executives hope for branding opportunities while journalists fail to truly interact with their readers. Mass media studies, covering journalism, news and facts. Its dynamic coverage is growing rapidly, starting from the era of the invention of the printing press to the industrial revolution 4.0. The presence of digital media or online media, shifting print media with paper-based materials, does not affect journalists and facts, only makes it easier for them to process for the perfection of the news and facts contained in it. Good skills are needed, from a journalist, through formal university education, to courses that make them more skilled and reliable in producing quality news, with adequate empirical facts and opinions. ABSTRAK Studi media massa, mencakup jurnalisme, berita dan fakta. Cakupannya yang dinamis bertumbuh pesat, dimulai sejak era penemuan mesin cetak hingga revolusi industry 4.0. Kehadiran media digital atau juga media online, menggeser media cetak dengan bahan dasar kertas, tidak mempengaruhi jurnalis dan fakta, hanya memudahkan mereka berproses untuk sebuah kesempurnaan berita dan fakta yang terdapat di dalammnya. Diperlukan kemampuan yang baik, dari seorang jurnalis, melalui pendidikan formal universitas, hingga kursus-kursus yang menjadikan mereka bisa lebih terampil dan dapat diandalkan melahirkan beritayang berkualitas, dengan suguhan fakta empiric dan opini yang memadai.

Gendered visual communication is a major part of contemporary, mediated discourse, yet these expressions are seldom reflected upon from a designers' perspective. Whose voices are empowered in tabloid newspapers and gendered magazines? In what ways can we express gender? In this visual essay, I provide an auto-ethnographic perspective, and use personal reflections and visualisations to show a process of deconstructing, shaping and encoding gendered expressions on mobile platforms from my point of view, as a designer and a woman. The essay contributes to research writing methodologies, by questioning conventional ways in which scholarly research is presented. I draw on concepts of feministic speculative designs and gender-flips to demonstrate how the designer can change the meaning of digital spaces. I show this with two examples; an online newspaper design and a student project of an online women’s magazine. I found that an awareness of such gendered expressions can challenge existing norms, enable creativity, innovative designs and shape new meanings in popular cultural expressions.

Despite compelling reasons to involve non-scientists in the production of ecological knowledge, cultural and institutional factors often disincentivize engagement between scientists and nonscientists. This paper details our efforts to develop a biweekly newspaper column to increase communication between ecological scientists, social scientists and the communities within which they work. Addressing community-generated topics and written by a collective of social and natural scientists, the column is meant to (1) foster public dialogue about socio-environmental issues and (2) lay the groundwork for the co-production of environmental knowledge. Our collective approach to writing addresses some major barriers to public engagement by scientists, but the need to insert ourselves as intermediaries limits these gains. Overall, our efforts at environmental communication praxis have not generated significant public debate, but they have supported future co-production by making scientists a more visible presence in the community and providing easy pathways for them to begin engaging the public.

Liberal democratic contexts have been the focus of much of the existing research on the relationship between incidental exposure to news on social media and political participation gaps. There is also a limited understanding of the factors that influence the mobilizing or reinforcing role of incidental news exposure in this process. This study examines the role of incidental news exposure on social media in political interest-driven participatory gaps in Singapore. It also examines how education, social network size, and heterogeneous political discussions further modify the effect of incidental news on the participatory gaps between high and low political interest groups. Findings from primary survey data support the reinforcement thesis, suggesting that politically disinterested individuals are negatively affected by frequent incidental news exposure, but those with high political interest benefit. Moderated moderation analyses indicate that these participatory gaps only exist at higher education levels and within more extensive social networks. Further, politically disinterested citizens are at risk for further disengagement if they encounter news accidentally in bigger social networks or engage in heterogeneous political discussion. The study contributes to the growing scholarship on the effects of incidental news exposure on political participation by highlighting the role of education and social network characteristics in amplifying the incidental news-based participation gaps.

Reading about the earth's situation these days is disheartening and frustrating. We have been fighting for the value of education yet we never learned to protect our environment. In this year's election period, we see the unrestrained and excessive number of tarpaulins around us, enormous number of plastic garbage used by electoral candidates, and polluting smog of carbon emission caused by the hundreds of cars clogging the traffic. Ironically, these people running for electoral positions are mostly educated and have been reading for years about the significance of environment to human lives. Suffocating reality, isn't it? I don't want to degrade the capabilities of our candidates in their capability to understand what is wrong and right. However, we cannot escape the fact that we see how excessive is the act. If only a strict implementation of policy on this is executed, this can be toned down. Interestingly, these tarpaulins all over Lanao can cover the whole lake if put together or even feed a whole municipality for a month. Worse, it can cause floods and clog drainages in times of rain. This week, we have been greeting each other of 'Happy Earth's day' and even advocated this as a sign of support to Mother Nature. Yet, we do not really put value in it. We might consider our garbage disposal, plastic use and energy use as low-scale pollutants compared to lead and mercury pollutants caused by manufacturing industries. However, let us be reminded that polluted manufacturing sites include textiles, electronics, food, fuel, plastics and metals. These are all consumed by us each day. There are even more types of manufacturing that fall under this umbrella term, including raw materials, agricultural products, building products, pulp and paper mills and much more. According to the National Association of Manufacturers, the top four largest manufacturing industries were food, chemicals, computers and electronics and metal products. We are all consuming these each day. Yet, some of us are not aware enough of the damage it can cause our environment. Further, this week, we have been talking about international book day. People here and there promote reading as a way towards literacy. However, are we literate enough in understanding the effect of our acts to our environment on a daily basis?

The visual presentation of articles to consumers of news media remains a challenge in the development of recommendation engines. This paper describes the use of an infinite canvas, a focus and context approach which allows users to take advantage of spatial relationships in a digital environment to understand connections between news articles. We describe how an infinite canvas, inspired by comic design, can be used to display related content, where articles appear along an X and Y axis. We present the results of an evaluation with ten participants who explored a digital prototype using a tablet device in order (i) to better understand user interaction through the completion of tasks and (ii) to test assumptions regarding the placement of recommended articles by time and relevancy. Participants responded positively to the infinite canvas, and provided various suggestions for future iterations, which we discuss.

This contribution is part of a festschrift in honour of emeritus professor, Nico Adam Botha, who laboured tirelessly for the concretisation of justice to all citizens in the boundaries of South Africa and beyond. His academic treatise offers volumes to matters of justice/injustice, in most cases particularly related to those with economic power, abusing the resources that cripple the economy and result in the most vulnerable (the poorest of the poor!) suffering. This contribution also reflects critically on the unequal representation of media reports on government corruption, as opposed to corruption in corporate South Africa. Moreover, it transposes beyond such media reporting. The author argues in this contribution that the academic corpus of Nico Botha provides a theoretical framework that can be used as a diagnostic analysis and probe, but also to re-imagine the causes and eradication of corruption in South Africa.

Araştırma, İngilizce ve Türkçe, seçilen bir dizi gazetenin karşılaştırmalı analizine dayalıdır. Amaç, tipografik tasarımın gazetenin mesajı üzerindeki etkisi ile ilgili bilgi edinmektir. Analizin birinci bölümünde, seçili gazeteler temel tasarım ilkeleri üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. İkinci aşamada ise bir grup katılımcının seçili gazetelerin basılı ve çevrimiçi edisyonlarının kapak/indeks sayfalarını güvenilirlik ve tanınırlık açısından değerlendirmeleri istenmiştir. Bulgular tipografik tasarım ile gazetelere ilişkin güvenilirlik ya da ciddiyet algısı arasında kuvvetli bir bağ olduğu yönündeki düşünceyi desteklemektedir. Ancak bu bağ, gazetenin kimliği içerik üzerinden anlaşılamaz ise, daha güçlü ve belirgin hale gelmektedir. İngilizce gazeteler içerikleriyle daha uyumlu bir görsel kimlik oluşturmakta ve bunu çevrimiçi edisyonlarına aktarmakta daha başarılıyken, Türkçe gazetelerin ciddi olmayan gazetelere özgü bir görsel düzende anonimleştikleri görülmektedir.

This study aims in seeking further knowledge on the phenomenon pertaining to journalists' experiencing ethical dilemma while in the line of duty. On a separate study, it is said that novice journalists frequently face puzzling situations, especially when covering traumatic events; that they oftentimes come unprepared to resolve it on site (Amend, Kay, & Reilley, 2012). Thus, causing them to question their own responsibility and authority as journalists. This pushes the researcher to cater this as her/his study in order to fully understand the situation at hand and thus making a comprehensive analysis with the possibility of uncovering topics that weren't available on the other researches similar to the study at hand. This study will focus on today's new set of journalists and how would they counteract public deterrence while embodying Journalistic Ethics and Human Ethics in general.

Over the past five years violence against women has been growing in Serbia. However, the aim of this paper is not to explore the reasons for the violence itself, but the way it is presented in the media. In this paper, representations of domestic violence are analysed by focusing on the image of women in newspapers, TV shows and film. Therefore, my intention is to examine: 1. How the media manipulate through the construct of gender; 2. The ways in which the media deepen gender differentiation and construct women as a weaker, inferior subject.

This essay posits American journalism as a particular realm of public knowledge production, inflected with its own professional practices as well as the way in which those practices subjugate technologies of representation. Taking the Arab Spring of 2011 as a case study in journalistic knowledge production, this article analyzes three epistemological conditions underscoring the Arab Spring’s development as an object of knowledge: the use of social media tools within the practice of journalism, the representational authority of the individual reporter, and the articulation of journalistic knowledge to broader institutions of liberal democratic power. While these are by no means the only possible themes of investigation, by looking at how journalistic practices rendered the Arab Spring sensible and worthy of public consideration, this essay hopes to reveal them as temporally and technologically contingent, but also linked to the values of liberal democracy that undergird journalism’s role in American public life.

The British newspaper industry has a long-standing and complex relationship with notions of crisis from an ethical, politico-economic and regulatory perspective. Challenges to the legitimacy of the press as a Fourth Estate purveyor of the public interest and a guardian of democracy abound. Despite repeated public policy statements in favour of media pluralism and freedom, the British news environment has become increasingly deregulated over the last two decades and changes to relevant competition rules have led to a greater concentration of ownership and cross-media ownership against a backdrop of economic austerity and technological change. Consequently, investigative journalism often struggles to receive the necessary support to fulfil its watchdog role. Yet this situation has opened up opportunities to shift away from the traditional model of highly competitive investigative practices towards collaboration between news organizations and journalists in large-scale projects. This paper applies archival research, including news content, political debate and public opinion surveys, to the qualitative analysis of case-studies regarding collaborative transnational partnerships and involving the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Attention is firstly drawn to the challenges posed by mass surveillance and the impact on journalistic activity as well as source protection in the United Kingdom. Consideration is then given to the anonymous mass leaks known as the Panama Papers (2016) and the Paradise Papers (2017), which are amongst the largest collaborative investigations in the history of journalism. This paper’s findings tend to show that the ability of journalists to collaborate on global projects in the public interest is having a profound impact as subsequent public policy debate continues in relation to issues such as fiscal justice, the insufficiency of government mechanisms, transparency and corruption.

This article examines whether there is a gap between the news choices of mainstream journalists and those of their public. It looks at the choices of both groups in relation to each other and explores whether these choices vary in connection with the occurrence of major political events. The heuristic value of this approach is demonstrated through a mixed-method study of the news choices of journalists and consumers in the main Argentine online sites. A content analysis of the top stories chosen by journalists of that country's two leading sites and the stories that consumers of these sites click most often yields two key results. First, during periods of relatively normal political activity, journalists choose stories about political, international, and economic subjects substantively more than consumers. Second, during periods of heightened political activity, consumers increase their interest in these stories, and the gap with the choices of journalists either disappears or narrows. Furthermore, interviews with journalists and with news consumers show that the presence of this gap during ordinary political times and its change during extraordinary periods are shaped by divergent and dynamic interpretive logics.

The role of digital press and social media in public relations is essential in 3.0 Internet ecosystems. Our interactive society requires organizations which align their actions with social demands and values. And these actions are linked to the participation in digital press and social media.
In this regard, we have carried out a study on the strategic tools of interactivity in both environments: digital press (Le Monde and USA Today) and social media (Pinterest). We make a comparison between ways of engagement with the consumer in a more controlled mass media (digital press) and in an open arena (social media).
Digital journalism is acquiring maturity in the use of its own resources: interactivity, multimedia and hypertext. The use of these features is a recent phenomenon. In this paper, we analyse the results of interactivity following an empirical study involving quantitative and qualitative methodology in which the use of certain aspects of this key tool for digital newspapers are analysed. The sample is made up of two of the most read digital newspapers in their respective countries. We analyse the number and percentage of news items with interactivity and with interactivity in the forum, the number and percentage of total comments in the forum per day and per piece, the number and percentage of online interviews per day, and we establish potential, in the area of communication, for public relations. For an enterprise, for a non-profit entity or for a public administration, it would be useful to explore the potential for engagement with customers through digital newspapers. 
In addition to the quantitative aspect of the research, we also analyse, from a qualitative point of view, the technological interactive needs for public relations in these digital newspapers, and the new relationships between journalist (and journal) and Public Relations organizations. These factors (technological interactive needs and new relationships) could change the professional dimension—empathy, orientation towards service, establishment of links with others, organizational awareness, collaboration between public relations managers and digital newspapers—of this synergy. We study if these types of interaction (comments and online interviews) could be transferred to a holistic environment of public relations.
In parallel, we analyse the social media site Pinterest as it is a growing source of information in social media.  The Internet has provided the tools to convert the individual into an active user, a process made all the more fluid with bidirectional and interactive content flow. Likewise, in terms of public relations, large companies and small businesses have had to transform the way they interact with their consumers or potential customers in order to benefit from the rapid advances of the digital age. The purpose of this study is to determine whether Pinterest acts as a communication tool to promote public relations. Through online observation and in-depth interviews, we establish the key factor regarding Pinterest users’ perception about the potential for public relations. The global public relations strategies (in digital newspapers and social media) embrace new tools, and we consider this categorization necessary.

The New York Times needs to expand to global audiences if it is to grow its digital subscription base. However, to do so it must balance difficult questions of colonial intentions with demands for inclusivity. By juxtaposing the case of the Times' Australian expansion with its approach to global journalism as a whole, the power dynamics of American journalism imported from abroad to grow markets is explored. But the context is different from what most scholars critique as media imperialism: there is no capital surplus, the Times is not a global media firm, and in the case of Australia, traditional concerns of 'first-world/third-world' power flows are not present, although different modes of domination nonetheless prevail.

Hydraulic fracturing is an energy extraction process that is increasingly attracting controversy. This article seeks to outline how the media report hydraulic fracturing (or " fracking "), and to explore its place within the reporting of energy concerns generally. To this end, it draws on an environmental communication perspective to understand the media reporting of the issue and the processes that shape it. This review reveals that media reporting of fracking is partitioned broadly according to discussions of the economic benefits or the environmental risks associated with the process. Further, these observed patterns in the reporting appear to mirror the recognized claims made about the issue, and the influence from protests and online media alongside national polity on energy production and security. While there is evidence that the practices of journalists and the geographic, economic and political contexts of their news production environments shape the amounts and the types of news reporting, the publics' perceptions appear, somewhat knowledgeable, but largely ambivalent or undecided on the issue at present. Therefore, it is argued that future research must continue to examine the reporting of hydraulic fracturing, its context, production, and its wider reception to develop our understanding of the role of the media in national conversations on fracking, energy, and the environment.

This chapter discusses research on the policies, laws, and subsidies that create and shape the organizational
structures and practices that form the basis of the news media. The research reviewed treats news media
institutions as political actors and makes assumptions about journalism’s importance in a democratic society.
Although this line of research, with its emphasis on political economic and normative questions, often has been
marginalized in American mass communication scholarship, the authors explain its ongoing importance,
particularly in relation to the journalism crisis, and, suggest future directions.

The delivery of news on Twitter and social media to an increasing majority of people has replaced the attempt to disseminate facts and truth on traditional news media, with the new goal of massive engagement via likes, retweets, and shares, with the result that an informed public, however imperfectly constructed, is being shoved aside by a polarized populace seething with anger.

The manuscript proposes a theoretical overview of editorial journalism in the contemporary media landscape by addressing aspects ranging from definitions to its alleged political effects. We also discuss the characteristics and routines driving the production of editorial texts in different journalistic cultures-a topic less considered in current research. At first, the manuscript explains how the division between news and opinion contributed to journalism's emergence as a social field-a debate that deserves more attention since the scholarship has traditionally put opinionated journalism in the background. We then highlight the typical structure of editorial pieces, as well as the procedures and criteria generally considered in their construction. Next, the article analyzes the relationship between editorial journalism and the political arena. Finally, we reflect on the relevance of the media's opinions in a digital environment. In addition to updating the debate on editorial journalism, the manuscript is relevant as historical and conceptual support to journalists' training.

Over the past two decades with the rise of digital media, newspapers across Western democracies have been increasingly adopting new forms of online participatory journalism. During this time, 'below the line' comment spaces have grown to be one of the most popular forms of user-generated content. Comment spaces are thought to perform a multitude of functions. However, much has been made about their potential as spaces for public debate that could act as a new form of the public sphere where journalists can hear from, and directly engage with, their readers. Survey and interview research has suggested that some journalists do read, and sometimes engage in, comment sections. However, no study has systematically analysed how journalists actually engage in comment spaces; what factors shape such engagement; and how this has evolved over time. In this chapter, we begin to fill in these gaps by investigating how Guardian journalists behave below the line. Our research, which draws upon a multi-method approach and longitudinal research dataset, included a manual content analysis of all comments made (2006-17) by 26 journalists (n= 5448) and 18 semi-structured interviews conducted in two phases (13 in 2012 and 5 repeated in 2017-18). Our chapter sheds light on how journalists behave below the line and what this might mean for journalism practice in the digital age.

This paper is a conceptual framework for comprehending how the shift in people’s access and choices in news, entertainment, and other information, changes people’s media consumption habits; thwarts many Mass Media business models and practices; and proposes that a shift is underway from the Mass Media of the Industrial Era and to the computer-mediated Individuated Media of the Informational Era. This epochal shift, resulting in most people having nearly instantaneous access in hand to more information than has before been printed or broadcast, is the greatest change in the history of media. It is already causing profound political, industrial, and societal effects and changes worldwide.

This article draws on studies that explore forms of contemporary journalism which focus on the role played by the expression of emotions and feelings. We present results from a qualitative study which examined how British tabloid newspapers covered acid attacks on women between 2010 and 2016. Drawing on the notion of affect, we explore the extent to which journalists try to turn painful embodied states into rational discourse. The data analysed suggest that such experiences cannot be completely captured by language. The journalists make use of particular narrative strategies focusing on the incident of the attack by highlighting how pain was experienced by the individual. This often results in the women being singled out and isolated. While there is some discussion of the contexts in which the violence occurred, the wider socio-cultural background is absent from the articles. We conclude that the focus on intense pain in the articles may enable a particular affective relationality to emerge that is felt by victims, journalists and audiences alike.

This article proposes an interdisciplinary framework designed to analyse discourse, affect and surveillance. By revisiting the "omniopticon" (the many watching the many) and proposing “civeillance” as an affective dynamic of surveillance culture, it considers communicative mechanisms that reflect the interchangeable functions and normalisations of surveillance technologies in personal and public spaces. When 17-year-old Austin Haughwout was using his drone to film aerial shots of Hammonasset Beach in Connecticut, 23-year-old Andrea Mears accused him of photographing people on the beach. Mears physically attacked Haughwout, called the police and accused him of assault. During the attack, Haughwout used his phone to record the incident without Mears’ knowledge. The video was used by the police who arrested Mears for assault. The recording then featured in news stories online, where Mears was subjected to sexist abuse. The following analysis shows how affective practices and embodied meaning-making are personally, socially and technologically embedded within discursive processes of representation. Contrary to non-representational theories of affect, this framework sees affective-discursive practice as a multimodal complex of communicative components. Dialogical mechanisms of discourse and contextual complexities function through physical practices and cultural conducts, which are ideologically influenced by social relations and power structures. Discourse both affects, and is affected by, the feelings, emotions, minds, ideologies and interactive experiences that we have in personal spaces and social contexts.

As the race to make a coronavirus vaccine is currently in progress, another race to find another vaccine against this other kind of epidemic is being proposed.

Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Tribunnews.com telah melakukan penguatan terhadap pandangan yang mensupremasi perempuan, melalui elemen – elemen dan sumber daya media yang dikuasainya.

Artykuł pokazuje, że internetowym portalom informacyjnym zarabiającym na reklamach nie opłaca się filtrować treści przed publikacją. Potencjalnie każda z nich może przyciągnąć uwagę odbiorców, a wiele mało popularnych treści może generować większe przychody niż niewiele tych najpopularniejszych. Dlatego mechanizmy filtrowania treści i nadawania im znaczenia ulegają zmianie. Dzieje się to już nie w redakcji przed publikacją, ale coraz częściej po publikacji, przede wszystkim w serwisach społecznościowych, gdzie użytkownicy polecają sobie wzajemnie treści, społecznie ustalając ich istotność i wartość. Przedstawione wyniki badań empirycznych potwierdzają, że to właśnie czynności związane z docieraniem do informacji i jej filtrowaniem są podstawowymi sposobami korzystania z serwisów społecznościowych. Konsekwencją zmian w zakresie selekcji i dystrybucji informacji jest malejąca rola redakcji w kształtowaniu agendy.

Cats share not only people's real lives but also their virtual world. The Meow Factor is a research project that takes an interdisciplinary approach to describe cat content. Cat content generally deals with cats in popular culture, with news articles about cats, cat memes, and cat videos in the public sphere, such as online newspapers and magazines, social media, print media, TV, movies, books, paintings, and merchandise. When taking a closer look at the cats' presence in their relationship with humans, it becomes obvious that cats play a large role in the public sphere. After an observation of traditional and social media in the English-, Russian-, and German-speaking world during a two-year period, categories for news stories and for user generated content have been developed. The results show that cat content maintains a strong presence in art and popular culture, in advertising, in the media, and on the internet.
