The history of the Jews of the island of Zante (Zakynthos) during the approximately 400 years of Venetian rule of the island suffers from the lack of collaboration between specialists of Jewish history and historians of the Greek lands that were part of the Venetian overseas empire, and from a lack of sources due to the destruction of the local archives of Zakynthos in 1953. In the present study, which focuses on the first two centuries of Venetian rule, new archival materials that have not yet been used for this purpose are integrated into the state of the art in this field. This has enabled a few errors to be corrected regarding the characteristics of Jewish life, and to throw further light on the activities of the Jews on the island, the collaborations between Jewish and Christian entrepreneurs, and particularly on the functions of Jewish consuls on the island during the early modern period. The potential of a confrontation between Hebrew and Venetian sources is demonstrated through the case of the consul/rabbi Jacob of the house of HaLevi.

Competition among tourist destinations is particularly intense, on a global scale. Especially, as the years go by, it increasingly intensifies, as the evolution of technology contributes to the development of tourist destinations, through various promotional activities. This rapid development of the tourist phenomenon, makes strategic marketing planning of a tourist destination, essential. However, the world-class 3S model (sea, sun, sand), doesn’t lead to a sustainable development and thus, several tourist destinations have developed alternative forms of tourism, in order to increase the growth of their tourism. In the context of this project, an effort is being made to develop a strategic marketing plan for the emergence of Patras, as a tourist destination, with a focus on the alternative forms of tourism within the area.
Patras, is a city which hasn’t been developed in terms of tourism even though it is famous worldwide, mainly for its carnival. However, it has potential and, above all, it can develop alternative forms of tourism to attract more tourists, but also to have a sustainable development. With the aid of primary and secondary research, the SWOT analysis for Patras was made, the objectives of the project were set and marketing strategies were proposed for its implementation. The aim of this project, is to present proposals and solutions, through the strategic planning, so that Patras, can emerge from the lethargy that has been into for so many years and become a remarkable tourist destination, with alternative tourism opportunities instead.

Im Zuge der sukzessiven Eroberung Griechenlands durch die Römer seit dem 2. Jh. v. Chr. wurden die hellenistischen Königreiche und Polisbünde in römische Provinzen umgewandelt, wodurch sich massive Veränderungen in allen Lebensbereichen der Bevölkerung ergaben. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist die Landschaft Akarnanien in Westgriechenland ein vielversprechendes Untersuchungsgebiet. Es befindet sich in der Nähe von Actium, wo nach der Schlacht zwischen Octavianus und Antonius im Jahre 31 v. Chr. laut historischer Überlieferung tiefgreifende regionale Umstrukturierungen stattfan­den. Deshalb befasst sich das Promotionsprojekt mit den römerzeitlichen Funden dieser Region.
Als Forschungsgrundlage dient die Aufarbeitung archäologischen Materials. Dabei werden die römerzeitlichen Funde (1. Jh. v. Chr. bis 4. Jh. n. Chr.) mehrerer Projekte aus Akarnanien in Westgriechenland systematisch aufgearbeitet und der archäologischen Forschung zugänglich ge­macht. Die weiterführenden Fragen der Dissertation fokussieren einen Epochenübergang (von hellenistischer zu römischer Zeit), der unmittelbar mit einem historisch überlieferten Systemwechsel (auf politischer, administrativer, ökonomischer, sozialer etc. Ebene) verbunden werden kann.
Die Kernfrage der Dissertation ist, inwiefern sich dieser Systemwechsel in der materiellen Kultur der Region niederschlägt. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse liegt, im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten dieser Art, in der Diagnose ökonomischer Wirkungsmechanismen in ihren Bezügen zu Gesellschaft und naturäumlich bedingter Ressourcen. Diese Fragestellung basiert auf der Prä­misse, dass sich antike Wirtschaftssysteme über ihre materiellen und geistigen Hinterlassenschaften, also die überlieferten Produkte und Texte, rekonstruieren lassen. Da Menge, Funktion und Gestaltung der Produkte an die jeweiligen Ansprüche und Bedürfnisse einer Gesellschaft gebunden sind, sind sie orts-, zeit- und gesellschaftsspezifisch verankert. Somit lassen sich in der Erforschung ökonomischer Wirkungsmechanismen mit den Artefakten als unmittelbare Informationsträger sowohl die Produktion (Materialverwendung, angewandte Technik, Gestaltung etc.), als auch, im Kontext, die Konsumption (Bedarf, Funktion, Verwendung etc.) beschreiben. In Kontinuität und Wandel bestimmter technischer und ökonomischer Artefaktmerkmale wird evident, welche Formen lokalen Wirtschaftens auch nach dem Systemwechsel weiter praktiziert und welche aufgegeben wurden.
Diese Ergebnisse werden dann anhand der überlieferten Schriftquellen ergänzt und in einen gesamthistorischen Zusammenhang gestellt. Hierbei werden zum einen unsere bisherigen historischen Annahmen anhand archäologischer Quellen überprüft, zum anderen sollen die bislang in der wirtschaftshistorischen Forschung verwendeten ökonomischen Modelle kritisch analysiert werden. Neben dem soziokulturellen Kontext stehen dem Antragsteller zudem die Ergebnisse geowissenschaftlicher und archäo-botanischer Vorarbeiten zur Verfügung, die in die Untersuchung miteinbezogen werden. So kann geklärt werden, welche Wirkung die naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten auf die lokale Ökonomie hatten.

The paper examines the evolution of Patras, a large Greek regional center, before the crisis and during the crisis, to result in alternative future development prospects of the city and appropriate recommendations for its sustainable development. The following topics are examined successively: (α) The process of decrease of territorial cohesion of the cities / regional centers themselves as well as of the surrounding areas of influence (b) The causes that lead to the need for the national and local / regional authorities to propose new and sustainable answers to the problems of cities (c) The role of Patras in the frame of the Greek urban system (d)The economic sectors where mainly exist considerable city growth potentials, which remain largely unexploited and the appropriate strategy and objective of the smart exploitation of the potentials to contribute to the exit of the city and the wider area of influence of the crisis.

Pausania descrive nel VII libro della Periegesi della Grecia il complesso mitico-rituale di Artemide Triclaria e Dioniso Aisymnetes a Patrai (attuale Patrasso), catapultandoci all’interno di una delle feste greche meno note e più scarsamente documentate – le uniche testimonianze riguardo la festa sono il citato libro sull’Acaia di Pausania e alcune monete – e con una bibliografia sporadica nel tempo e poco cospicua. Eppure ci troviamo dinanzi all’analisi di un fenomeno che può aiutarci nel compito di comprendere le dinamiche della religione dei Greci.

In this paper the art of cartography is employed with a double mission. First, digital cartography (GIS) is used to provide quantitative data as to how the cultural profile of a city is reflected in the implementation of the international relations of its Higher Education Institutions. Then, mental cartography is applied to provide qualitative insights as to how international members of the academic community visualize their life in the city. The case study is drawn from a course on Greek culture and civilization, offered to all international students of the University of Patras (European Capital of Culture 2006). The main arguments presented here are:
a) The enhancement of the cultural image of a city can act as an attraction factor for establishing partnerships between Higher Education Institutions in the field of cultural studies and, b) University courses on art and culture can encourage active engagement of international exchange students in their host cities. The expected benefits are manifold. The academic community is facilitated in implementing its international aspirations, the city authorities gain information about the city function from an alternative source, and the students find a creative way to convey their emotions, experiences and comments.

Αναλύονται επιλεγμένα εκθέματα του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου Πατρών, τα οποία συνδέονται μεταξύ τους δι’ αλυσιδωτών παρεκβάσεων με άξονες το φυσικό και τεχνητό φωτισμό αρχαίων οικοδομημάτων, το τελετουργικό της φωταγωγίας στο λυχνομαντείο της Πάτρας και τις επιρροές από την Αίγυπτο, το σκιοφωτισμό σε αρχαία γλυπτά αλλά και αρχιτεκτονικά μέλη, τη συμβολική απεικόνιση του Ήλιου και τη λατρεία πλανητικών θεοτήτων, εκφάνσεις του φωτός στην αρχαία τέχνη και θρησκεία.

Although these floors form part of domestic architecture, they unveil something of the society's mentality and current trends in art, the mixed population of Patras and the collaboration between Italian and Greek artisans. Iconography was not necessarily relevant to the respective building’s function. A private domus could be decorated with subject-matters inspired from mythology and religion – a conclusion reinforced by evidence from sculpture, too. We gain insight into the skilled, qualified artisans, the melting of cultural influences, the Italian and North African elements intertwined with Hellenistic tradition, the commissioners’ welfare, educational background and luxurious lifestyle. Visual representation is now adjusted to the individual’s predilections, to embellish their private dwellings. Rather than pleasing the god, artistic creation is now intended to allow mortals savour their everyday life in their homes. Indicative of the current trends in fashion is the portrait of the formerly daemonic Medusa, now humanized and related to the festive and theatrical spirit of Dionysos, who was particularly worshipped in Patras. The exhibited mosaics also allude to the importance of dining-rooms (triclinia, andrones) in social life and the villas of Patras, a Hellenic-Roman city.
