To date, only few mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded ND2 subunit of Complex I have been reported, usually presenting a severe phenotype characterized by early onset encephalomyopathy and early death. In this report, we describe a new mutation in the MTND2 gene in a 21-year-old man with a mild myopathic phenotype characterized by exercise intolerance and increased plasma lactate at rest. Electromyography and brain NMR were normal, and no cardiac involvement was present. Muscle biopsy showed a massive presence of ragged red - COX-positive fibres, with enlarged mitochondria containing osmiophilic inclusions. Biochemical assays revealed a severe isolated complex I deficiency. We report on the improved structural, electrical and optical properties of the Ti/AI/ITO transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) deposited on n-GaN. The TCEs were deposited by RF/DC magnetron sputtering under Ar ambient at room temperature. The as-deposited TCEs were annealed at 600°C in N₂ ambient for 15 min. The structural, electrical and optical properties of the TCEs were characterized by 2-Theta X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), Hall effects, I-V and UV-visible measurement system. From XRD measurement, significant ITO (222) and (411) peaks were observed after the sample was post-annealed at 600°C. Morphological analysis by AFM shows that surface roughness Rɋof the post-annealed sample is smoother as compared to the as-deposited sample. The electrical resistivity of the TCEs layer decreases to 8.607×10¯⁵ Ω-cm after the post-annealing process. The Working Party on international nuclear data Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC) is a collaborative effort between the major OECD nuclear data projects: ENDF/B (USA), JENDL (Japan) and JEFF (Europe), and the IAEAsupported non-OECD projects CENDL (China) and BROND (Russian Federation). Nuclear data challenges and problems that are common to all projects are considered in various WPEC subgroups that are normally of limited time span. The achievements of these subgroups during the course of 2005/06 are reviewed in this paper. Among the recent accomplishments are improved criticality predictions through revised U evaluations, the completion of new cross-section standards, and the creation of a new fission product library. Problems that are currently being addressed are the processing and inclusion of covariance data in the libraries, improvements in decay data to assist in decay heat calculations, assembly of a well-structured High Priority Request List, validation of the new fission product cross-section library, and the assessment of nuclear data needs for GEN-IV.

A Multi-Channel Algebraic Scattering (MCAS) theory has been used to study the interaction of a nucleon with light-mass nuclei as a coupled-channel problem. The method can be solved for all energies so that bound states as well as resonances of the compound nucleus can be specified, even if the compound nucleus is nucleon unstable. A resonance finding prescription ensures that all resonances of the system can be found no matter how weak and/or narrow. Spectra of mass-7 nuclei and of the proton unstable 15 F are discussed, the Coulomb displacement energy considered, and first results on using MCAS details in a radiative capture cross section calculation presented.

The new European Directive 2014/24/EU requires the use of BIM procedures in the construction of public buildings for all member States. The countries belonging to the European Union shall be obliged to transpose the Directive and adapt their procedures to that effect. The paper analyzes the IFC format, the only one recognized by the European Directive Standards for BIM procedures, to assess its use for simulations of buildings. IFC, described by the ISO 16739:2013 standard (ISO, 2013), is a standard that describes the topology of the constructive elements of the building and what belongs to it, overall. The coordination of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems is a major challenge for complex buildings and industrial plants. Education length can be crucial in mitigating or amplifying cultural distance. Studies suggest prolonged exposure to diverse cultural contexts fosters adaptability and intercultural competence, especially through extended education. This extended learning period often enables individuals to appreciate and adapt to different Worldviews, which may reduce the perception of cultural distance. For instance, international students studying abroad for an extended period may develop greater empathy and understanding of hierarchical and non-hierarchical cultures.
Conversely, shorter educational exposure to diverse cultural contexts may mean that individuals remain more ingrained in their cultural framework. In this case, the cultural distance could feel more pronounced because individuals are less equipped to interpret behaviors outside their own cultural Worldviews.
The Worldview framework elucidates how cultural distance manifests through divergent cultural values. Length of education, for example, can potentially reduce perceived cultural distance by equipping individuals with a broadened perspective that fosters greater cultural adaptability.

We address the phylogenetic relationships of the drongos (Dicruridae) at the species-level using sequences from two nuclear (myoglobin intron-2 and c-mos) and two mitochondrial (ND2 and cytochrome b) loci. The resulting phylogenetic tree shows that the most basal species is D. aeneus, followed in the tree by a trichotomy including (1) the Asian D. remifer, (2) a clade of all African and Indian Ocean islands species as well as two Asian species (D. macrocercus and D. leucophaeus) and (3) a clade that includes all other Asian species as well as two Australasian species (D. megarhynchus and D. bracteatus). Our phylogenetic hypotheses are compared to [Mayr, E., Vaurie, C., 1948. Evolution of the family Dicruridae (Birds). Evolution 2, 238-265.] hypothetical family ''tree'' based on traditional phenotypic analysis and biogeography. We point out a general discrepancy between the so-called ''primitive'' or ''unspecialized'' species and their position in the phylogenetic tree, although our results for other species are congruent with previous hypotheses. We conduct dating analyses using a relaxed-clock method, and propose a chronology of clades formation. A particular attention is given to the drongo radiation in Indian Ocean islands and to the extinction-invasion processes involved. The first large diversification of the family took place both in Asia and Africa at 11.9 and 13.3 Myr, respectively, followed by a dispersal event from Africa to Asia at ca 10.6 Myr; dispersal over Wallace line occurred later at ca 6 Myr. At 5 Myr, Principe and Indian Ocean Islands have been colonized from an African ancestor; the most recent colonization event concerned Anjouan by an immigrating population from Madagascar.

We describe recent work on MedSLT, a medium-vocabulary interlingua-based medical speech translation sy stem, focussing on issues that arise when handling languages of which the grammar engineer has little or no knowledge. We describe how we can systematically create and maintain multiple forms o f grammars, lexica and interlingual representations , with some versions being used by language informants, and some by grammar engineers. In particular, we describe the advantages of structuring the interlingua definition as a simple semantic grammar , which includes a human-readable surface form. We show how this allows us to rationalise the process of evaluating translations between languages lacking common speakers. The grammar-based interlingua definition can also be used in other ways. We outline a possible small-vocabulary shared task for the emerging medical speech translation community. Data would consist of about 2000 recorded and transcribed utterances collected during an evaluation of an English ↔ Spanish version of the Open Source MedSLT system; the vocabulary covered consisted of about 450 words in English, and 250 in Spanish. The key problem in defining the task is to agree on a scoring system which is acceptable both to medical professionals and to the speech and language community. We suggest a framework for defining and administering a scoring system of this kind.

The neutron capture cross sections of 186,187,188 Os have been measured at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility, n TOF, in the neutron energy range from 1 eV up to 1 MeV. In this contribution, we report the results of the analysis of the resolved resonance region (RRR). Resonance parameters have been extracted from a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields with the SAMMY code. A statistical analysis has been performed and the related average resonance parameters are derived. This information is crucial for a complete understanding and modeling in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model of the capture and inelastic reaction channels, required for the evaluation of the stellar reaction rates of these isotopes. Maxwellian average cross sections for the range of temperatures relevant for s-process nucleosynthesis have been derived from the combined information of the experimental data in the resolved and unresolved resonance regions. A brief account of the implications of this analysis in the estimation of the s-process component of the 187 Os abundance and the related impact on the estimates of the time-duration of the galactic nucleosynthesis through the Re/Os clock is given.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a pain mediator, elevated in skin after injury, which potentiates noxious thermal and mechanical stimuli (hyperalgesia) through the activation of ET A (and, perhaps, ET B) receptors on pain fibers. Part of the mechanism underlying this effect has recently been shown to involve potentiation of neuronal TRPV1 by PKCε. However, the early steps of this pathway, which is recapitulated in HEK 293 cells co-expressing TRPV1 and ET A receptors, remain unexplored. To clarify these steps we investigated the pharmacological profile and signaling properties of native endothelin receptors in immortalized cell lines including HEK 293 and ND-7 model sensory neurons. Previously we showed that in ND7/104, a dorsal root ganglia-derived cell line, ET-1 elicits a rise in intracellular calcium ([Ca 2+ ] in) which is blocked by BQ-123, an ET A receptor antagonist, but not by BQ-788, an ET B receptor antagonist, suggesting that ET A receptors mediate this effect. Here we extend these findings to HEK 293T cells. Examination of the expression of ET A and ET B receptors by RT-PCR and [ 125 I]-ET-1 binding experiments confirms the slight predominance of ET A receptor binding sites and messenger RNA in both ND7/104 and HEK 293T cells. In addition, selective agonists of the ET B receptor (sarafotoxin 6c, BQ-3020 or IRL-1620) do not induce a transient increase in [Ca 2+ ] in. Furthermore, reduction of ET B mRNA levels by siRNA do not abrogate calcium mobilization by ET-1 in HEK 293T cells, corroborating the lack of an ET B receptor role in this response. However, in cells with low endogenous ET A mRNA levels, ET-1 does not induce a transient increase in [Ca 2+ ] in. Observation of the [Ca 2+ ] in elevation in ND7/104 and HEK 293T cells in the absence of extracellular calcium suggests that ET-1 elicits a release of calcium from intracellular stores, and pretreatment of the cells with pertussis toxin or a selective inhibitor of phospholipase C (PLC) point to a mechanism involving Gαq/11 coupling.

Recently, the fine structure of the 0.7 MeV resonance in the 230 Th neutron-induced cross section was investigated within the hybrid model. A very good agreement with experimental data is obtained. It is suggested that fine structure of the cross section quantify the changes of the intrinsic states of the nucleus during the disintegration process. Due to internal excitations produced in the region of the outer barrier, where the density of single-particle states is enhanced, new transitions levels are produced. These transitions levels cause β-resonances very close in energy. A way to introduce phenomenologically this phenomenon in cross section calculations is presented.

Co-occurrence of closely related taxa on islands could be attributed to sympatric speciation or multiple colonization. Sympatric speciation is considered to be rare in small islands, however multiple colonizations are known to be common in both oceanic and continental islands. In this study we investigated the phylogenetic relatedness and means of origin of the two sympatrically co-occurring Zosterops white-eyes, the endemic Zosterops ceylonensis and its widespread regional congener Z. palpebrosus, in the island of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a continental island in the Indian continental shelf of the Northern Indian Ocean. Our multivariate morphometric analyses confirmed the phenotypic distinctness of the two species. Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses with~2000bp from two mitochondrial (ND2 and ND3) and one nuclear (TGF) gene indicated that they are phylogenetically distinct, and not sister to each other. The two subspecies of the peninsula India; Z. p. egregius of Sri Lanka and India and Z. p. nilgiriensis of Western Ghats (India) clustered within the Z. palpebrosus clade having a common ancestor. In contrast, the divergence of the endemic Z. ceylonensis appears to be much deeper and is basal to the other Zosterops white-eyes. Therefore we conclude that the two Zosterops species originated in the island through independent colonizations from different ancestral lineages, and not through island speciation or multiple colonization from the same continental ancestral population. Despite high endemism, Sri Lankan biodiversity is long considered to be a subset of southern India. This study on a speciose group with high dispersal ability and rapid diversification rate provide evidence for the contribution of multiple colonizations in shaping Sri Lanka's biodiversity. It also highlights the complex biogeographic patterns of the South Asian region, reflected even in highly vagile groups such as birds.

A new spectrometer has been built at the EC-JRC IRMM to investigate isomer decay in the millisecond range and activation cross sections of isotopes, where isomeric states exist and are populated. The spectrometer is equipped with high-resolution gamma-ray detectors and an ionisation chamber for the measurement of charged particles, e.g., fission fragments. NEPTUNE provides pulsed quasi mono-energetic neutrons at pulse repetition frequencies up to 5 kHz and tuneable neutron pulse widths ranging from 10 µs into the ms-region. For this purpose a beam chopper based on a parallel-plate capacitor has been integrated into the accelerator beam line in order to deflect the charged-particle beam onto a tantalum beam dump. First research has been performed with the NEPTUNE spectrometer dedicated to the shape isomer search in the odd-A uranium isotopes 235 U, 237 U and 239 U. In further experiments the population of long-lived spin isomers was investigated.

Circuit-level oxide degradation effects on CMOS inverter circuit operation and individual MOSFET behavior is investigated. Individual PMOSFET and NMOSFET devices are assembled offwafer in the inverter configuration through a switch matrix. A range of gate oxide degradation mechanisms are induced by applying a ramped voltage stress (RVS) of various magnitudes to the input of the inverter. A novel circuit model is used to simulate the voltage transfer curves (VTCs) of degraded inverters. At the transistor level, increased gate leakage currents of nearly eight orders of magnitude are observed, in addition to severely reduced on-currents (> 50 percent reduction), and large threshold voltage (Vth) shifts (> 100 mV). At the circuit-level, stress of either polarity results in inverter performance degradation. For the DC characteristics, oxide degradation attributed to limited hard breakdown (LHBD) in the NMOSFET and hard breakdown (HBD) in the PMOSFET, results in decreased output voltage swing (> 260 mV). Under the same conditions, inverter degradation in the voltage-time (V-t) domain exposes much larger changes in performance. For instance, significant increase in the rise time results in the output voltage being pulled up to only 660 mV (VDD = 1.8 V) before switching low. From a circuit reliability viewpoint, it may be possible for subsequent circuit stages to compensate for a few degraded devices, but in high-speed circuits, increased rise/fall and delay times may cause timing issues. Furthermore, increased gate or off-state leakage currents can potentially load previous circuit stages or result in increased power consumption.

The DETER testbed is shared infrastructure designed for medium-scale repeatable experiments in computer security, especially those experiments that involve malicious code. The testbed provides unique resources and a focus of activity for an open community of academic, industry, and government researchers working toward better defenses against malicious attacks on our networking infrastructure, especially critical infrastructure. This paper presents our experience with the deployment and operation of the testbed, highlights some of the research conducted on the testbed, and discusses our plans for continued development, expansion, and replication of the testbed facility.

In this paper, we describe a translation framework aimed at achieving high-quality speech translation within restricted conversational domains. Towards this goal, we developed an interlingua-based approach, in which a generation-based method is augmented with an examplebased method to improve system robustness, even with imperfect inputs due to speech recognition errors. The framework is integrated into a dialogue-based language tutoring system, to provide immediate translation assistance to students during the dialogue interaction. We evaluated the translation quality within a weather information domain configured for native English speakers practicing Mandarin Chinese. We achieved perfect or acceptable translations for 94.3% of the manual transcriptions of a test set of 695 spoken queries, and 90.2% on automatic speech recognition outputs.

Adopting Business Process Excellence (BPEX) practices successfully might appear straight forward, but studies report that few firms achieve the desired objectives. They produce islands of improvements, but fail to sustain the more long term effort and reap the full benefits of their investments. To address the gap, this paper presents a new, integrative BPEX audit method which organizations can use to benchmark their ongoing implementation efforts and results, evaluate progress, and identify specific actions to be done with the aim of developing not only a short term impact, but also long term sustainability of results and improvements.

In Eurotransplant kidney allocation system (ETKAS), candidates can be considered unlimitedly for repeated re-transplantation. Data on outcome and benefit are indeterminate. We performed a retrospective 15-year patient and graft outcome data analysis from 1464 recipients of a third or fourth or higher sequential deceased donor renal transplantation (DDRT) from 42 transplant centers. Repeated re-DDRT recipients were younger (mean 43.0 vs. 50.2 years) compared to first DDRT recipients. They received grafts with more favorable HLA matches (89.0% vs. 84.5%) but thereby no statistically significant improvement of patient and graft outcome was found as comparatively demonstrated in 1st DDRT. In the multivariate modeling accounting for confounding factors, mortality and graft loss after 3rd and ≥4th DDRT (P < 0.001 each) and death with functioning graft (DwFG) after 3rd DDRT (P = 0.001) were higher as compared to 1st DDRT. The incidence of primary nonfunction (PNF) was also significantly higher in re-DDRT (12.7%) than in 1st DDRT (7.1%; P < 0.001). Facing organ shortage, increasing waiting time, and considerable mortality on dialysis, we question the current policy of repeated re-DDRT. The data from this survey propose better HLA matching in first DDRT and second DDRT and careful selection of candidates, especially for ≥4th DDRT.
