Джон Ди (13 июля 1527 — 26 марта 1609, Лондон, Англия) — известный британский натурфилософ, математик, астроном, географ, посол, теолог, мистик, алхимик и астролог королевского двора, которому посвящена книга. Для этого сборника к. ф. н. Юрием Фёдоровичем Родиченковым были переведены и собраны, впервые издающиеся в академическом формате, редкие биографии доктора Джона Ди — Гертруды М. Хорт, Уильяма Флетчера Младшего и Т. Ф. Дибдина. Их дополняют переводы важного для издания эпистолярного наследия Джона Ди: письма к королеве Марии и королеве Елизавете, переписка с лордом Берли, письмо Чарльзу Джекману и Артуру Петту. В послесловии приведена статья редактора сборника к. ф. н. Владимира Васильевича Винокурова. Основной темой настоящего издания является обширное наследие доктора Ди, которое в наше время становится все более доступным для подробного изучения. Сборник прекрасно дополняет ранее изданные «Личный дневник доктора Джона Ди» и Джон Ди «Афористические начала». A short essay where the usual identification of Lucifuge Rofocal (Prime-Minister of Hell in the Grimoire Tradition) with Focalor (41st Goëtic Daemon), based on the similarity of their names, is exposed as being impossible. This is also an attempt to unveil some of the mysteries of the "Demon of Pacts", the Black Man of the Witches' Sabbath, the Fool and Devil – Lucifugus Reficul.

Most musicians, artists, poets, adepts and shamans collaborate with the Muse. The Hindu knew the phenomenon as apauruseya, śruti, and ākāśavāni. We discuss it as prophecy, Dionysian ecstasy, Bacchus, the Jungian collective unconscious, race consciousness, and the Akashic Record.

The metaphysics of the multiverses demand that we understand the Muse as an autonomous projection of human consciousness.

OF all the demons of distinction. Asmodeus has had the greatest fall in power and prestige. This Asmodeus. who has now hecome a laughing-stock, was in his day, on the authority of Anatole France, our great contemporary diabolist, "an important (lemon, more powerful than Ashtaroth. Cedon, Uriel, Beelzebub, Aborym, Azazel, Dagon, Magog, Magon, Isaacharum, Accaron, Orphaxat, or Beherith, who are nevertheless devils not to be despised." 1 Asmodeus, according to the demonologists, originally was a shining angel in heaven, and, after his fall, was counted among the most eminent personages in hell. In fact he was linked with Lucifer and the other luminaries of limbo.

Within Max Théon's circles – The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor and the Cosmic Movement – there was great interest in ritual magic. Some of the works associated with these movements reveal a theoretical and practical approach that had been adopted from medieval and renaissance grimoires, which they used for different purposes. The methods of The Key of Solomon – perhaps the most influential medieval magical text – were reborn in Theon’s circles where they were transformed into psychological and spiritual practices. Gal Sofer’s chapter explores the reception of ritual magic by Alma and Max Théon, as well as by members of the H.B. of L., in order to reveal how these figures participated in the revival of ritual magic and how their interpretations influenced practitioners in the twentieth century and beyond.

In 1903, Aleister Crowley turns the ideas accepted by fellow ceremonial magicians on “how magic works” upside-down by writing an essay entitled The Initiated Interpretation of Ceremonial Magic. Refusing the theurgic ideas, dating back to the 3rd century C.E. with Iamblichus, of magical practice as a way of contacting god by slowly achieving godhood through the practice of  prescribed rituals, Crowley goes on to explain the effectiveness of magic through psychological terms.

In fact Crowley strips the miraculous from the religious experience, which was how magical practice was and is seen by a majority of practitioners, through the use of psychological explanations. Crowley fully believes in the effectiveness of magical ritual, but for him there is no God or miracle involved in the process, it works through physical means. Crowley is one of the first to put forward the idea that ritual magic might not work as stated in the ritual, but on a non-conscious level, having been clearly influenced by the ideas of Freud becoming popular at that time.

This essay is, therefore, a prime example of an attempt to reconcile religion, science and magic in the occultist revival of the late 19th and early 20th century. Crowley's utilitarian perspective on ritual and religious experience reflects a major contrast between him and his contemporaries and in certain aspects prefigures recent cognitive psychology of religion theories such as those by Pascal Boyer.
