Jewish Magic

This publication seeks to endeavour the relationship between material artefacts and reading practices in ancient and medieval cultures. While the acts of reception of written artefacts in former times are irretrievably lost, some of the involved artefacts are preserved and might comprise hints to the ancient reading practices. In form of case studies, the contributions to this volume examine various forms of written artefacts as to their implications on modes of reading. Analyzing different Qumran scrolls, codices, Tefillin, Mezuzot, magical texts, tablets, bricks, and statues as well as meta-textual and iconographic aspects, the articles inquire the possibilities of how to correlate material aspects to assumed modes of reception and practices of reading. The contributions stem from Egyptology, Papyrology, Qumran Studies, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, Ancient Christianity, and Islamic Studies. In total, this volume contributes to the research on practices of reception in times past and demonstrates the potential hidden in text-bearing artefacts.

Книга «Сефер Разиэль га-Малах» (Книга ангела Разиэля) – одна из самых известных книг в истории еврейской магии, авторитет которой был воспринят на Западе. Для нашего перевода выбрана книга, изданная в Амстердаме в 1701 году, которая воспроизводит средневековый рукописный источник. Ее текст сопоставляется с виленскими изданиями 1876 и 1878 годов, где исправлены многие опечатки и сделаны некоторые правки. Книга эта труднодоступна, так как ранее не была переведена достойно и полноценно ни на один европейский язык. Причина во многом заключается в сложности самого текста, его прочтение требует больших усилий и знаний. Между тем сама книга чрезвычайно популярна в еврейской традиции и, являясь антологией, вобрала в себя разные пласты развития магии, представила саму ее историю. Сефер Разиэль использовали в том числе как «сгулу», то есть особое «чудесное» средство – само наличие этой книги дома давало возможность привлекать достижения положительных результатов в жизни.
Задача данного критического перевода - ознакомить широкий круг читателей со столь важной книгой, сопроводив ее комментариями, позволяющими адекватно воспринимать этот оккультный текст. Дать возможность не просто прочитать загадочные фразы, ангельские имена и разобраться в начертаниях амулетов, но и осознать их контекст, их подлинный смысл, раскрывающий попутно разные стадии развития еврейской магии.
В первый том входит: Предисловие Амстердамского и Виленского изданий, Книга одеяний, Молитва Адама, К вопросу о Духе и его силе, первая часть Великий Разиэль.

The book “Sefer Raziel HaMalakh” (The Book of the Angel Raziel) is one of the most famous books in the history of Jewish magic, the authority of which was perceived in the West. We have chosen for our translation a book published in Amsterdam in 1701, which reproduces a medieval manuscript source. Its text is compared to the Vilna editions of 1876 and 1878, where many misprints were corrected and some corrections were made. This book is difficult to access, as it has not previously been adequately and fully translated into any European language. This is largely due to the complexity of the text itself, which requires great effort and knowledge to read. Meanwhile, the book itself is extremely popular in the Jewish tradition and, being an anthology, has absorbed different layers of the development of magic, and presented its very history. Sefer Raziel was also used as a “segula”, i. e. a special “miracle” means — the very presence of this book at home gave an opportunity to attract positive results in life.
The task of this critical translation is to familiarize a wide range of readers with such an important book, accompanied by comments that allow for an adequate perception of this occult text. To give an opportunity not only to read mysterious phrases, angelic names and understand the amulets’ outlines, but also to understand their context, their true meaning, revealing the different stages of Jewish magic development.
The first volume includes: Foreword of the Amsterdam and Vilna editions; The Book of the garment; Adam’s Prayer; The question of the Spirit and his power; the first part of the Great Raziel.

This book presents the story of a unique collection of 140 manuscripts of ‘learned magic’ that was sold for a fantastic sum within the clandestine channels of the German book trade in the early eighteenth century. The book will interpret this collection from two angles – as an artefact of the early modern book market as well as the longue-durée tradition of Western learned magic –, thus taking a new stance towards scribal texts that are often regarded as eccentric, peripheral, or marginal. The study is structured by the apparent exceptionality, scarcity, and illegality of the collection, and provides chapters on clandestine activities in European book markets, questions of censorship regimes and efficiency, the use manuscripts in an age of print, and the history of learned magic in early modern Europe. As the collection has survived till this day in Leipzig University Library, the book provides a critical edition of the 1710 selling catalogue, which includes a brief content analysis of all extant manuscripts. The study will be of interest to scholars and students from a variety of fields, such as early modern book history, the history of magic, cultural history, the sociology of religion, or the study of Western esotericism.
