This paper examines the treatment of disease and provides an experimental analysis of the treatment of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis. The study of attitudes towards the disease in patients treated with tuberculosis is important in the formation of loyalty to treatment and in measures aimed at improving mood. The study involved patients diagnosed with tuberculosis treated at the Khorezm Regional Center for Tuberculosis and Pulmonology. Developed by A.E.Lichko and N.Y.Ivanov on the classification of types of disease response in patients PQBI (Personality Questionnaire of the Bekhterev Institute) methodology was used. The study found that participants had increased self-esteem, risk of separation from the social environment, changes in family relationships, depression, long-term treatment, increased susceptibility to depression due to separation from family relationships, experiencing economic hardships is reflected in the impact on their position in the family and society.

Veil has become a predominant issue of controversy and is counted as a locus of cultural debate between Islamic and secular-Western cultures. Just as Muslim women's appearance, mode of their practice and agency has also received much critical attention from the part of secular-Western thinkers. In the backdrop of these debates, this paper elucidates the agency of Covered Sisters in The Size of a Mustard Seed. In this novel, Umm Juwariyyah, a Muslim-American writer, unravels the struggles Muslim-American women face from within and outside of the community. Covered Pearls is a female hair-salon in the novel where a powerful hijabi-sisterhood is formed which empowers them and resolves their manifold problems.

In this presentation I want to question the way in which the concept of ‘colonialism’ has been used in reference to Greece and emphasise a series of contradictions—as opposed to certainties—that are important to keep in view when thinking about potential scenarios of questioning capitalist domination today. I will refer to colonialism and anti- imperialism in the context and history of Greece, and how common contemporary understandings of financial capital reproduce fetishistic, nationalist forms of anti- capitalism.
A relation of domination produces the dominated subject as a national subject, and so resistance affirms the subject produced by domination, i.e. Greek identity. In relation to Paul’s talk, I think this poses the question of how can the subject that resist colonisation constitute itself in a way that does not essentialise itself.

The Caporalato system parallels the gangmaster framework, underlining illicit labor practices mediated by intermediaries. This system is entrenched in master narratives-culturally ingrained stories that dictate behaviors and perpetuate power disparities, safeguarding the privileges of the elite. Within this oppressive framework, women face heightened challenges, including increased vulnerability to human trafficking and exploitation. This study explores the counter-narratives developed by women in response to Caporalato's master narratives. It gathers empirical data from naturally occurring meetings with 11 women from diverse African nations, conducted between January 2023 and July 2023. Using the joint fantasizing approach, which focuses on collaboratively constructed stories with potential future impacts, the study unveils three prominent themes of resistance: 'My son will make me a queen', 'My body will set me free', and 'I want to stay at home!'. This analysis reveals that effective resistance through counter-narratives does not rely on forming a single, unified story opposing the master narrative. Rather, these narratives selectively challenge and sometimes adopt aspects of the dominant stories they confront.

This chapter offers a comprehensive overview on diverse forms of Burmese nationalism and various nationalist ideas and groups that prevailed in different historical stages. The ways Myanmar has been defined as a form of community have varied, influenced by local dynamics’ and external influences, institutions and individuals, and by the contingencies and contexts of history. Due to a range of historical, geographic, demographic, political, and cultural factors, the story of Burmese nationalism as it relates to the territorialization (and deterritorialization) of the country has had both a unifying and divisive effect with different ideas of belonging, solidarity, and community being forged simultaneously by competing groups who wish to assert their vision of an independent and modern Myanmar.

The Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity formed in Mexico in 2011, to create public spaces for people to share the grief and the pain about the escalation of violence attributed to the drug war and the war on drugs. Public poetry recitals or performances were crucial to these public meetings. This article takes theoretical approaches from the Global North to highlight the affinities and connections between the escalation of violence in Mexico, and the neoliberalizations of politics and thought on a global scale, and to learn from the Mexicans' strong resistance. The analysis focuses on three sets of poems: two that explore the connectivity between interiority and exteriority of emotional pain; the anonymous poem 'I'm not the son of a poet' which is analysed through Judith Butler's concept of precarious life, and through which I explore the critical limitations and potentials of frames and mirrors for a critical intervention; and Maria Rivera's 'The...

In this essay, I fill this gap in knowledge by arguing that the central object of Fanonian dialectics is violence (anticolonial guerilla warfare), the achievement of the decolonized Black nation and the eventual creation of a new anti-colonial (Pan-African) world order over and against its dialectical negation: Neo-colonialism via colonial counterinsurgency. Furthermore, I argue that Fanon’s dialectical thought helped lay the basis for the emergence of a new theory of revolution against US empire coined by Huey P. Newton as intercommunalism. The complementarity and conceptual harmony between Fanon’s and Newton’s dialectical thinking about US/colonial empire, counterinsurgency, the imperative of creating new forms of humanism, and the lumpen masses as primary agents in the revolutionary transformation of society comprise what I call the ‘empire as pacification’ thesis.

The worst failure is of the predictable kind. At the time of this writing, Sharon’s government has called off “Road Map” negotiations and sent its occupation forces back into the centres of Palestinian towns for more mass arrests and house demolitions. The Palestinian Authority – as such dependant from the start on Israeli will to consider “peace” – is scrambling to counter accusations that it supports “terrorism” while its internal legitimacy hangs by a thread that has been getting thinner since long before the current Intifada proved the hopelessness of “peace” as was brokered in Oslo, also by Americans. Meanwhile, on and through confiscated Palestinian lands, the Israeli government continues to build roads that connect illegal settlements (grown fungus-like since Oslo) for exclusive use by armed settlers and soldiers; and, following its singular logic of “security,” this “only democracy in the Middle East” continues the construction of the 1000-km-long, 8-meter-high, 2-meter-think segregation wall that is longer, taller and thicker than the one whose destruction the “free world” celebrated only 14 years ago. Even to the most gullible of us, it should be clear by now that negotiations prescribed by roadmaps charting already-traveled territories – partitioned, occupied and pillaged for decades through colonialist agendas– come to nothing but a dead end.

It is hard to imagine, even harder to realise in practice, but the development of an approach to learning that involves building education as the accomplishment of an equality of intelligences is critical to the emergence of a just society. Why? Simply, to ensure that all are included in voicing ideas, experiences, imaginative possibilities ensures also an aggregation of powers transcending the viewpoint of any individual.

This chapter explores how this may be accomplished drawing upon ideas from Spinoza and radical democratic theory and practice.

While previous research in organization studies has utilized transgender to show how gender is done, overdone and undone, this literature lacks empirical grounding, and the theoretical arguments dominating it tend to idealize the transgressive power of transgender while reducing transgender to hyperbolic drag and stereotypical passing. To further advance the understanding of transgender within and around organizations, this article presents a qualitative study from a Northern European country to investigate how male-to-female transvestites do and undo gender in everyday life and work. In contrast to extant research, we found that participants did transgender and undid gender by underdoing gender, that is, by combining feminine, masculine and ungendered practices and attributes in ways that made passing and drag insignificant. Students' academic experiences are often shaped by normalized conceptions of literacy that do not honor the interrelatedness of multiple identities, languages, and literacies. This qualitative case study in an urban middle school highlights students' critical meta-awareness of their identities-in-practice in the figured world of their classroom via a narrative analysis of students' writing, interviews, and focus group discussions. The author focuses on students' internalization and/or resistance within/beyond the curriculum as the basis for developing culturally sustaining stances toward curriculum, pedagogy, and research that actively disrupt cultural, ethnic, racial and epistemological hierarchies of power in academic contexts and beyond. Drawing on a methodological approach that involved visual ethnography and combined content and narrative analysis, my research aims to analyse the role that emotions play in the territorial–ontological conflict between British Columbia provincial government, Coastal GasLink and the Wet’suwet’en. Using high-quality online audiovisual material produced by the Wet’suwet’en – allowing a critical perspective throughout the article on the politics of self-representation – I was able to get into the conflict with a phenomenological approach, employing my senses to analyse body movements, tone of voice and language. Theoretically, I articulate a framework made up of Ingold’s phenomenology, Blaser’s ontological conflicts and Escobar’s studies of culture. Then, I build on the spiderweb, a metaphor developed by Ingold, to expand the scope of González-Hidalgo’s emotional political ecologies. The results show that Coastal GasLink, taking culture ‘as a symbolic structure’, proposes as a central mitigation strategy, through their environmental impact assessment, what I call ‘an ontological interruption’ of the Yintakh. Besides, I demonstrate that the processes of political inter-subjectivation sought at the Unist’ot’en Healing Centre help understand the worry, frustration and stress of the Wet’suwet’en facing the world-creating practices of Coastal GasLink. On the other hand, the Healing Centre also reveals how the affections for the other-than-human and their spiderweb (Yintakh or relational world) inform Wet’suwet’en resistance. Lastly, I unveil how Coastal GasLink and the Ministry of Aboriginal Rights, through practices of inclusion and gender equality, seek to blur radical cultural differences, delegitimise the Wet’suwet’en precolonial governance system, and create affections for the Western-modern world.

Select members of the Congressional Black Caucus through their votes, speeches, arrests and nonviolent forms of protest practice a renewed kind of nonviolent resistance against a neoconservative political agenda advanced by the executive branch of the U.S. government in the past six years. Their practices are nonviolent according to the definition of nonviolence discussed by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his 1962 New York Times Magazine article: "we will take direct action against injustice without waiting for other agencies to act…We will try to persuade with our words-but if our words fail we will try to persuade with our acts." Nonviolent resistance according to this quote means first trying to persuade with words then trying to persuade with direct action. This study will compare nonviolent methods of direct action between 2001 and 2007 and those between 1955 and 1963. The nonviolent methods between 2001 and 2007 resist the neoconservative policies that are based on the same assumptions as those in the civil rights movements between 1955 and 1963. The identification of five comparisons in particular proves a continuing tradition of nonviolent protest identified as a 'surviving legacy' of resistance against neoconservative policies. First, Rosa Parks's refusal to give v up her seat on a city bus is comparable to U.S. Representative Barbara Lee's refusal to support the military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Second, Daisy Bates's commitment to ensuring a quality public education for the Little Rock Nine is comparable to U.S. Representative Chaka Fattah's efforts to improve the Philadelphia public school system. Third, the organizing work of Ella Baker in creating the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960 is comparable to the organizing work of Maxine Waters in creating the Out of Iraq caucus in 2005. Fourth, the appeals to the U.S. Constitution of James Farmer and the Freedom Riders serves as a foundation for John Conyers' appeal to the U.S. Constitution in his lawsuit against George W. Bush. Fifth, the strategy of getting arrested to call attention to unjust foreign policies within the past five years is comparable to the "jail, no bail" strategy during 1962 and 1963. The major point of this thesis is to argue the existence of a concerted strategy of nonviolent resistance practiced by specific Congressional Black Caucus members. The thesis will compare nonviolent resistance in the 21 st century to that of the early 1960s.

This article aims to lift the curtain on Kojève's elusive conception of violence in conversation with Eric Weil who was one of his most prominent interlocutors during and after the Hegel lectures. First, I outline the context and causes of the understudied Weil-Kojève dispute, situating its deeper roots in their respective experiences of exile. Secondly, I present an overview of the argument put forth in Weil's Logic of Philosophy, which was intended as a refutation of Kojève's Hegelianism. I conclude with a brief critical reading of Kojève's objections to the regulative function of discursive reason and the politics of compromise in Weil, which, in his view, aim to repress rather than resolve conflict.

During the decades of the communist dictatorship in Hungary, the authorities made all grassroots journal initiatives impossible, forcing non-conformist, experimental, and dissident authors to (re)produce and distribute themselves texts that could not be published in official form. Initially they used typewriters and carbon paper, and later various alternative printing techniques. In this way, several interlocking or even separate scenes embraced the practice of ‘self-publishing’, including neo-avantgarde art, experimental literature and the so-called ‘democratic opposition’. This essay offers an overview of the history of uncensored, so-called samizdat literary-artistic periodicals, between the crushing of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the democratic changes of 1989, a period associated with the name of the first secretary of the Communist Party, János Kádár.
The greatest challenge for samizdat periodicals was undoubtedly to ensure the intellectual, material, and infrastructure conditions for serial and systematic publication and to avoid reprisals by the authorities. Samizdat initiatives sought to overcome a lack of resources through the use of various domestic means and technical innovations, as well as through diverse socio-cultural practices. Different distribution models were put in place to reach and engage with readers. Samizdat periodicals attempted to avoid the attention of the authorities by resorting to conspiratorial precautions or ingenious circumvention of press laws, and sometimes by adopting an apolitical stance. This overview reveals that samizdat literature played an important role in several respects during the decades of communism. On the one hand, it broke the monopoly of state culture and gave birth to limited but free forms of cultural publicity; on the other hand, it created social structures and networks, strengthening civic courage and activism; and finally, it crossed tightly controlled borders and contributed to the emergence of an alternative democratic public sphere in Eastern Europe through its transnational circulation, long before the fall of the Soviet bloc.

En este año 2024 se publica el No. 11 de la Revista Escenarios Sociales de la Carrera de Trabajo Social del CUNOC. Es una satisfacción presentar este número que con esfuerzo y dedicación se ha venido editando con aportes de profesores, estudiantes, egresados de trabajo social y otros autores de las ciencias sociales.
Este año 2024 continua la coyuntura sociopolítica del mantenimiento de la democracia en su bases fundamentales, no obstante siguen las amenazas y arremetidas del pacto de corruptos. Vinculada a esta coyuntura están dos artículos que abordan la participación política de la mujer a nivel nacional y local, respectivamente de la maestra Mónica Enríquez y del trabajador social rural William Soto.
En este contexto de crisis sociopolítica, económica y ambiental, aparece el artículo del doctor Rolando Alonzo que aborda la comunalidad e intervención social en territorialidades indígenas, precisamente fueron los pueblos indígenas y sus estructuras sociales los que lograron parar el golpe de Estado a la democracia.
La crisis en lo social es permanente y afecta a sectores vulnerables como niños, jóvenes y mujeres, en este sentido, el artículo de la licenciada Mayra Santos ponen los acentos críticos en las formas de crianza positiva en niñez y adolescencia, que dado la situación es urgente para la sociedad guatemalteca.
Algo novedoso para la academia de humanidades y ciencias sociales del CUNOC es la articulación del arte y la ciencia, en este orden, el artículo del cantautor quetzalteco y doctor Fernando López deja elementos teóricos y metodológicos para aplicar la Autoetnografía en la interpretación musical vinculado a fenómenos de justicia transicional en Guatemala. Seguro es un enfoque enriquecedor desde la investigación de la práctica artística que trasciende el enfoque positivista todavía hegemónico en la academia.
Finalmente el maestro Jorge García aporta una ponencia donde hace planteamientos y análisis vinculando la matemática educativa y sociedad. Los graves problemas sociales requieren del concurso de todas las disciplinas y sus formas de cómo abordarlas.
Son siete trabajos académicos que bondadosamente han colaborado sus autores, esperamos que el público lector del CUNOC y de la sociedad en general pueda enriquecerse con la información y conocimientos que nos brindan estos trabajos.

O nosso objetivo neste artigo é, fundamentalmente, fornecer informação mais detalhada sobre as formas de ação popular contra o projeto de florestação criado pelo regime do Estado Novo, em Portugal, a partir de 1938. De forma sistemática ou aleatória, este tema tem sido trabalhado por alguns investigadores, tendo sido produzida uma quantidade considerável de informação e conhecimento. A visão global através da qual nos propomos abordar a resistência camponesa parte de um elemento específico do seu repertório de contestação: as petições e exposições enviadas pelas comunidades rurais e agentes locais ao governo. Na sequência do exposto, o objetivo fundamental é identificar e clarificar os processos e os meios que produzem uma resistência em diálogo direto com o poder político e que convergem para a ideia de lógica ininterrupta de oposição às políticas públicas em diferentes pontos do país durante a ditadura.

In the palace of Clement VI and Innocent VI as a sacred area, the image which has an exegetic function is like an ideogram based on medieval texts. With their Anglo-Saxon bestiary register, the images have their own language with a complex mechanism of creation. This language is in relation with a specific system which is decoded through the use of the medieval library of the Avignon papacy, with the Etymologiae of Isidor of Seville and the De Universo of Raban Maur. Thanks to these images, the expression of the pope’s power on the soul is here printed on the wall, sculpted in the stone and written in the holy palace of Avignon. This is a luxury demonstration where images reflect a politic aim to claim the power of two famous popes; Clement VI appearing as a resistant of anti-judaism. To obtain these results, a new iconographic method applied to archaeology of buildings has been developed for archaeology of monumental image.

Punjab. Cancer incidence in the state is higher than the national average of 80 per 100,000 populations, reveals a survey by the Punjab government. The situation is so serious that on an average, a family has at least one cancer patients. According To Dr. Pritpal Singh (Baba Farid Centre for Special Children, Faridkot) "we can say that Punjab is dying now. There is no doubt. Punjab is the food basket of India. Now we can say it is the disease basket" The data were obtained from the Max Super Specialty Hospital, Bathinda to determine whether difference in cancer incidence associated with gender by age and time. The study did not try and ascertain causes of cancer, but merely looked into correlation. Along with the increase in reported cancer deaths, excessive use of mineral fertilizers and pesticides for over five decades has led to its soil contamination and water being rendered suspect in a number of studies. In this data expected number of male and female cancer patients of Punjab is available for different age group is given. The data that, I have obtained from authorities is from 2011 to 2016. In this data number of patients of Punjab given year wise as shown in the table1 below. Aim of the Study Aim of study is the statistical survey of cancer patients to evaluate the relevance of cancer disease in male and female subjects of different age groups. There has been a wealth of research in Latin America on the most recent global intensification of extractivism, or the capitalist exploitation of natural resources. Some of this research has examined the resistance among front-line Indigenous and rural communities, and allied environmental groups, who are challenging the development of mega-scale mining, oil, gas, mono-agricultural, and related infrastructural projects. Researchers have noted many similar tactical repertoires that can take multiple forms (through direct action, media representation, and in legal, political, and educational forums) and extend across geographic scales (local, national, regional, and transnational). Communications is key to much of their work; however there has been far less research examining the communications practices in any detail. This article focuses on the communications practices in use in three Indigenousled campaigns against extractivist projects in North America, the decade-old Unist'ot'en Camp in northwestern Canada, Idle No More, and the #NoDAPL of the Standing Rock Sioux. My findings indicate that a resurgent Indigenous movement, in concert with environmental and other settler allies, has adopted an array of communications practices that combine protective action on behalf of their lands and waters with the creation of new communities in place-based assemblies and social media and digital networks.

Since childhood, we have been taught that breathing is a biological process that regulates the habitual existence of living organisms on Earth. However, the evolution of diverse philosophies of existence across different segments of time and space has positioned the biological process of breathing within a wider, diverse, and phenomenological matrix, where breathing is not only a physical process but also a 'beyond-the-human' ideological process. This argument gains further clarity when the phenomenon of breathing is analyzed with respect to the work culture and the state of physiological well-being of workers in corporate institutions. If workers can fetch profit to the market, they are treated with dignity; and in case they fail to yield profit, they are immediately disposed of. Based on these arguments, this article unfolds the various visible and invisible ways in which the corporate institutions in India 'suffocate' the physical and psychological well-being of workers through its incarcerated principles of modernity/coloniality. Through the aspect of flash mob performances across corporate institutions in India, this article also makes an effort to generate creative and resistant modes of decolonial healing in everyday life.

The current study presents through the genre of novel those relations and the relationship between all novels investigated in this study and how they are lightly similar or not and furthermore how can we be so similar as humans apart from our sufferings as in the novels main characters and their stories. Bijay Kumar Dass tackles the genre of novel which transcends the narrowness, provinciality and parochialism of national and general literatures. Second of all, the concept of oppression in fictional and non-fictional novels has been presented in so many ways in this study as it is the central idea of all. What is the concept of oppression? "Oppression" means a combination of power that creates a system of prejudice against innocent people to severely discriminate them and take the benefits of those groups by excessive power. Oppression is the theme that commonly used in literatures as an unjust exercise of power against minorities; which will be the sample of this study, obviously. Thirdly, as per the theoretic framework, the psychoanalytic theory of Freud will be the selected theory to investigate the characters being oppressed and oppressors of these novels especially the protagonists and the antagonists to observe the oppression via the role of the theme through the plot and the text. It is obvious for this dissertation to be tackled within the internal and external conflict of the characters to get started within and to reach our results; to keep an eye on the comparative study all together.

This article explores the application of Dorothy Smith’s Standpoint Feminism to Manju Kapur’s Difficult Daughters, focusing on how the lived experiences of women, particularly the protagonist Virmati, challenge the patriarchal structures that govern pre-independence Indian society. Through an analysis of Virmati’s struggle for education, personal autonomy, and resistance to societal expectations, the article demonstrates how her marginalized position provides critical insights into the limitations and inequalities of the dominant social order. Drawing on Smith’s theory, the article examines how Virmati’s standpoint as a woman
navigating oppressive institutions offers a deeper understanding of the gendered power dynamics embedded in marriage, family, and education. Furthermore, the analysis highlights how resistance to these structures becomes a form of empowerment, enabling Virmati and other female characters to challenge patriarchal norms and envision new possibilities for agency and self-definition. This application of Standpoint Feminism reveals the transformative potential of marginalized perspectives in exposing and resisting societal inequalities, contributing to a broader understanding of feminist literary criticism.

About This Book Messianism Against Christology: Resistance Movements, Folk Arts and Empire is a work committed to rethinking the Christian tradition from the point of view of messianic movements of eco-sustainability and social justice rather than magnified individuals. Framed by considerations of political struggle and insurgent folk art in contemporary Detroit and ancient Ethiopia, the work concentrates its attention on the biblical tradition, teasing out memories of pastoral nomad resistance not entirely erased by the repressions of agricultural empires, that are revitalized in the prophetic movements of Elijah, the Baptist and Jesus. It also underscores the relevance of these "little tradition" practices for eco-politics and indigenous solidarity efforts today. Excerpts from the Introduction Junk Installation: Messianic Art and Social Movement On the Street in Detroit When the situation is dire and response is critical, the messianic appears as "shock art." Since I am writing about a particular kind of sign in particular spaces and times, I will begin where I live. This book finds its founding emblem in brightly-colored folk-faces painted on rusting car hoods displayed on a ghetto street in inner city Detroit. The artist is Tyree Guyton. The street is Heidelberg-now become internationally (in)famous as site of these startlingly colorful apparitions. The faces he calls, "faces of God.

This book highlights the broad scope and span of resistance as a contentious practice in the early modern Iberian world.  In this context, from the late Middle Ages onwards, resistance, rooted in the political and legal language of the ‘old regime’ that provided agents with legitimacy and resources for their actions, took place mainly within the established jurisdictional system. These resources for litigation and demand made resistance a widespread kind of contesting practice related to wider protests. The authors assess the wide array of actions developed by individuals and communities to preserve their rights and identities.

The book demonstrates how the Portuguese and Hispanic polities and their colonial possessions experienced resistance from below over a long period of change that marked the rise of more centralised states. Offering a comprehensive overview of the variety of forms and expressions of resistance developed in different social, cultural, and territorial contexts, this collection sheds additional light on the relationship between order and conflict within early modern European empires.

Ahmed Masoud's The Shroud Maker packs a powerful punch in using the implicative potential of black comedy as a site of resistance. Masoud deploys black comedy to resist and assert control over the exploitative discourse and action against the Palestinians living in Gaza. He does this by using black humour as a tool of alienation to detach people from their trauma, break the fourth wall to make the audience complicit, as a weapon to challenge Israeli dominant discourse, and to assert Palestinian control over the war's narrative. Dark humour walks the thin line between humour and conflict in the play where "battered by injustice, but still defiant," the eighty-four-year-old protagonist, Hajja Souad, a shroud maker by profession, introduces trauma through humour and then tips the balance in favour of trauma. Through her offensive jokes and satiric thrust, the play confronts the desensitisation of violence against Palestinians by evoking a reaction in the audience-laughter, followed by reflection on their laughter. While the balancing act between humour and trauma is maintained, The Shroud Maker argues that humour is perhaps the most effective way of communicating and ascribing responsibility to its spectators. Ahmed Masoud puts forth an alternative way of discussing political violence and war beyond the dominant western narrative that marginalises the Palestinian voice. Relaying the tragedy of violence and culture wars through dark humour underscores the message of resistance, coping and persistence in Palestine.

Sense of place has become relevant in Latin America in recent decades. Although many scholars have looked at people-place relationships there, language barriers have limited the international exposure of these studies. By assembling a collection of works mainly published in Spanish and Portuguese, we trace the fields of research where the concept has taken root and reflect upon the regional characteristics of sense of place. Overall, this review provides empirical insights into the human experience of place in a culturally diverse region marked by historical injustices, inequalities, and instability. These structures have created specific, often ambivalent senses of place, organized around resistance and adaptation. A more nuanced understanding of sense of place, which emphasizes the richness and complexities of people-place connections, will help avoid oversimplification and idealization in future theories. To frame our analysis, we investigate sense of place from the perspective of humanistic geography. Overlapping with other non-representational inquiries, the humanistic lens focuses on human-environment relationships-encompassing experiences, behaviors, ideas, and feelings-to deepen our understanding of the intricate and multifaceted human condition and the essential role of place in human life. Our review shows that sense of place has proven helpful in shedding light on critical Latin American socio-spatial phenomena such as mobilities, territorialities, and fear. Regionally, researchers center on marginalized and oppressed senses of place framed by longstanding structural inequalities stemming from a colonial legacy, capitalism, and neoliberalism. We highlight "geographies of terror," "diabolic places," and "necroplaces" as powerful categories that address the grim reality in the region. 1 | Introduction "Sense of place" has gained popularity among social and natural scientists. This concept, now common in different fields, including geography, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and recently, ecology and environmental sciences, has widened its scope and become polysemic. It is often used interchangeably with sense of belonging, place attachment, place identity, insideness, or rootedness (Kyle and Chick 2007; Nelson, Ahn, and Corley 2020; Relph 1976), functioning as an umbrella term that encompasses the symbolic, emotional, and experiential connections between people and place (Agnew 2011; Hay 1988; Kyle and Chick 2007; Relph 1997; Tuan 2014). For that reason, sense of place has been described as "elusive" (Williams and Stewart 1998) and "nebulous" (Cresswell 2009). Complicity, complacency, and bystander are important categories because “they helped create a world in which genocide was possible.” Discussing “complicity” is not an easy task, and not only because we are not used to thinking of it as a historical category. Complicity adds another layer of institutional complication to an already dark story about the destructive character of humanity. More specifically, the question of complicity is relevant not only to the genocidal violence the US and the EU are currently supporting in the Middle East but to the planetary struggle against climate change. After all, lucrative weapon deals will not help fighting the massive process of desertification large swamps of the world is experiencing, at the moment. Not knowing complicity from dissent will not relieve us of our share of complicity or connivance with more and greater forms of destruction. The students in the encampments have shown us a different path.

Transitivity has come to be recognized as a promising heuristic tool for uncovering implicit ideologies in a wide range of areas. Though it has been used to explore worldviews in several kinds of discourse, nearly all have relied solely on qualitative analyses. Statistical analysis can offer a fuller understanding of past societies. This study applies a gradient, discourse-based understanding of transitivity, which lends itself nicely to corpus-based analysis, to data from 16th-century New Spain. In colonial Mexico, female behaviors were often strictly circumscribed. This paper uses a quantitative, corpus-based framework to examine how gender inequality is reflected in patterns of transitivity. It is found that female subjects are significantly associated with imperfective contexts, nonfinite constructions, akinesis, and low affectedness of the object-all markers of lower transitivity. Thus, for the most part, in these data, women are represented as inactive, inert, and powerless.
