This article draws upon archival research conducted at the British Board of Film Classification and uses over 100 film files to explore contentious material within a range of 1970s films. It also examines institutional attitudes at the BBFC within this period and tracks the changing responses to a number of issues across the decade which can be mapped through the BBFC files.
