En su testamento político, Richelieu hacia la siguiente consideración sobre el control del mar: «La mar es aquella que entre todas las herencias sobre las que todos los Soberanos pretenden tener más parte, y sin embargo es aquella sobre la que los derechos de cada uno están menos esclarecidos; en una palabra, los viejos títulos de esta dominación son la fuerza y no la razón: hace falta pues ser poderoso para pretender a dicha herencia» 1 .

"L'intimité" quotidienne: accident biographique et réaction sociale (familiale)
En héritant les traditions de leurs prédécesseurs des siècles passés, puis sous l'influence des préceptes "bourgeois", les hommes du XIX e siècle considéraient qu'il ne faut pas exposer à la connaissance publique les choses inconvenantes de leur être et de leur vie. Vu que les "accidents" étaient très fréquents (et surtout ceux de la vie intime, ayant pour résultat l'apparition des bâtards), ils provoquaient presque inévitablement l'opprobre de la société. D'habitude, c'était la famille qui essayait, la première et par tous les moyens accessibles, d'imposer une réglementation des situations indésirables et désagréables, capables de nuire à son image. Les interventions étaient parfois très dures: elles pouvaient conduire à des ruptures définitives entre parents et enfants ou entre frères. Cette sorte de tensions, provoquées par le désaccord entre la vie personnelle et l'image sociale, est illustrée par l'auteur avec deux cas, tirés de l'histoire de sa propre famille au XIX e siècle. Le "quotidien" des deux personnages fut marqué par de tels "accidents", dont les conséquences furent accueillies avec des réactions très fortes, afin d'éviter la déconsidération sociale et protéger la famille de la honte et du déshonneur. Les traces de ces "accidents" dans la vie sociale ont disparu, même de la mémoire familiale: les informations à leur sujet ont été cueillies dans les archives.

In a frustratingly confusing passage, Pausanias (1.7.1) mentions a brother of Ptolemy II, called Argaeus, who was executed for plotting against the king’s life. Pausanias continues with a statement about the execution of another brother, who although unnamed is explicitly called the son of Eurydice. But if Eurydice was not Argaeus’ mother, whose son was he? This note argues that his mother can neither have been Artacama nor Berenice. Argaeus is not mentioned among Thais’ children with Ptolemy I. So who were his parents? Why was he placed in charge of the relocation of the remains of Alexander the Great from Memphis to Alexandria? And can this Argaeus be identified with the commander sent against the Cypriot king Nicocles of Paphus? One overlooked possibility that solves all these issues is that Argaeus was Alexander’s illegitimate son with Thais adopted by Ptolemy.

Literary representation of illegitimacy bring attention to a subject matter not yet solved by contemporary norms, even considering the new family models accepted in a post-modern society that disagree with the hegemonic model mother-father-children. Still, illegitimacy and bastardy are figured as a taboo, and a strong one. A sensible and controversial subject, although really a popular theme in literature. This qualitative research with bibliographic approach deals with illegitimacy by comparing and analyzing the main works Wise Children by Angela Carter and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, dealing with their historical context, with approximations to literary theory, philosophy, anthropological and sociological texts, as well as the field of psychoanalysis. Therefore, this study problematizes and questions the limits of kinship, filial relationship and illegitimacy in literature and how it is reflected upon and is a reflection of society, taking into consideration the Western concept of family. Thus, to problematize the issue of illegitimacy is to broaden its concept, leading to a revaluation of Western family institutions that have changed from the hegemonic view of mother-father-children to a multitude of models.

This work aims to show the relationship between Church and Monarchy during the reign of Ferdinand the Catholic though the biography of his bastard son, archbishop Don Alonso of Aragon. It is detailed too, how worked the first steps of the viceroyal power in the Crown of Aragon, by means of Don Alonso’ political actions.

Le texte fournit une analyse généalogique et sociopolitique détaillée de la famille Lizarazu dans le royaume de Navarre aux XIVe et XVe siècles, en mettant l'accent sur des figures notables telles que Pedro Sanz de Lizarazu. On souligne sa participation à la cour royale, son rôle militaire dans la défense du royaume et sa stratégie matrimoniale avec des familles influentes pour assurer sa position. On observe un changement dans la tradition onomastique, mettant en évidence une possible hispanisation de la famille. De plus, la dynamique du pouvoir entre les différentes branches de la famille et sa relation avec la monarchie sont analysées, y compris la possible descendance illégitime de l'infant Luis, frère du roi. Cette étude éclaire les interactions complexes entre la noblesse navarraise, la monarchie et les dynasties régnantes en Europe, ainsi que l'évolution de l'identité culturelle et sociale de la région. En résumé, l'analyse généalogique de la famille Lizarazu offre un aperçu détaillé des dynamiques politiques et sociales dans le royaume de Navarre pendant la période étudiée.

El texto proporciona un detallado análisis genealógico y sociopolítico de la familia Lizarazu en el reino de Navarra durante los siglos XIV y XV, centrándose en figuras destacadas como Pedro Sanz de Lizarazu. Se destaca su participación en la corte real, su papel militar en la defensa del reino y su estrategia de matrimonio con familias influyentes para asegurar su posición. Se observa un cambio en la tradición onomástica, evidenciando una posible hispanización de la familia. Además, se analiza la dinámica de poder entre las distintas ramas de la familia y su relación con la monarquía, incluyendo la posible descendencia ilegítima del infante Luis, hermano del rey. Este estudio arroja luz sobre las complejas interacciones entre la nobleza navarra, la monarquía y las dinastías reinantes en Europa, así como sobre la evolución de la identidad cultural y social de la región. En resumen, el análisis genealógico de la familia Lizarazu proporciona una visión detallada de las dinámicas políticas y sociales en el reino de Navarra durante el período estudiado.

The short essay was in response to Building 22 Edition 10 editor Chris Bretecher’s  thoughtful request:

“The architect currently finds her or himself existing within a blurred zone far beyond the previously defined boundaries of Architecture. This has led the student and professional alike to begin discovering new realms and exploring alternate fields.

We are looking for an inventive response from each member of the faculty in one of the following ways:

1 a diagram/ideogram charting this expanded field (300 dpi/jpeg)
or
2 a short fragment of text (250 words) suggesting why architecture as you see it should or should not be expanded
and/or
3 list out ten expanded non-architecture references/works of art/objects/ideograms you think could or should be part of a student's learning.”

My submission was a text fragment accompanied by a calligraphic diagram of the Vitruvian curriculum: “A R C H I T E C T” as a 9-squae mandala with each square encompassing a Vitruvian sub-discipline.

Queen Elizabeth I had a love affair with her favorite court playwright, Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, in 1573. They had a love-child whose identity had to be kept secret. He was placed in the home of a Catholic earl who had been in the Tower as a traitor. In return for his release, the Second Earl of Southampton made the infant born October 6, 1573, his heir as the Third Earl of Southampton. He named the boy after himself, Henry Wriothesley.  This theory is controversial, but there is growing evidence that this child was Elizabeth's son (curly auburn hair, for example), but his parentage was kept secret for political reasons.

A case study in the culture of decision-making in the late medieval Burgundian Low Countries, from the petition drafted and rewritten by the City of Mons to its introduction at the ducal council, and follow-up, including power-brokerage and "pot-de-vins". Issues at stakes were the status of illegitimate children, the stalls rights during the annual fair, and the policy of brewery and ale-drinking in and around the city. Duke Charles the Bold never granted the petitioned favors.

Today, children born outside of marriage, like their 'single' mothers, generally no longer carry the social stigma that was attached to them until about two generations ago. Illegitimacy was therefore not an attractive, i.e. scientifically 'valuable' topic in scholarly historiography for a long time. However, even modern historians find it difficult to justify the number of mistresses and illegitimate children of Emperor Frederick II (died 1250) other than with a 'southern Italian mentality'. It is possible to prove that Frederick behaved in a way that was entirely customary for the time. This will be done using the example of the illegitimate son of the emperor, Enzio, and with a look at his siblings. Connected with this is the question of his position in his family of origin, his possibilities for action and the circle of his confidants and descendants.

Außerhalb einer Ehe geborene Kinder tragen ebenso wie ihre ‚ledigen‘ Mütter heute allgemein nicht mehr das soziale Stigma, das ihnen noch bis vor etwa zwei Generationen anhaftete. Illegitimität war daher in der bürgerlich geprägten Geschichtswissenschaft lange auch kein attraktives, d. h. als wissenschaftlich ‚wertvoll‘ geltendes Thema. Allerdings tun sich auch moderne Historiker damit schwer, die Zahl der Geliebten und unehelichen Kinder Kaiser Friedrichs II. (gestorben 1250) anders zu rechtfertigen als mit einer ‚süditalienischen Mentalität‘. Dass Friedrich sich durchaus zeitüblich verhielt, lässt sich belegen. Dies soll am Beispiel des illegitim geborenen Kaisersohns Enzio und mit einem Blick auf seine Geschwister unternommen werden. Damit verbunden ist die Frage nach seiner Stellung in seiner Herkunftsfamilie, seinen Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowie dem Kreis seiner Vertrauten und Nachkommen.

The biography of Fernando Sánchez de Castro (Jaime I’s bastard son) is written based on Medieval and Modern chronicles. In it the importance of the historical figure relies on three key moments in his life, namely his journey to Sicily, his expedition to the Holy Lands, and his rebellion against King Jaime I and Prince Pedro. The biography constitutes an attempt to address the influence that Manfred of Sicily and Charles of Anjou had on Sán- chez de Castro’s decisions.

Abstract: In this article, I argue that the divinely driven legitimation of Neoptolemus’ bastard child in Euripides’ Andromache may have evoked in the minds of the audience the legitimation of Athenian bastards that, as E. Carawan first proposed, took place after the outbreak of the plague in Athens in 430 BC.

Seeking childhood among the period theoretical treatises and educational texts on the one hand and source documents on the real life of children on the other hand has brought a wide range of new knowledge, but at the same time it has revealed the desiderata and limits of researches focused in this way. The chronological scope of the publication-from the Middle Ages, when, compared to the later period, we have to rely on a substantially more modest base of written, pictorial and material sources, until the 18th century, just before the onset and application of Enlightenment ideas-proved to be crucial in terms of its conception and methodological grasp but also its contribution. All of the transformations and progressions of the phenomenon of childhood were monitored in our study on the background of the advancement of the entire society, while taking into account the specificities of individual social classes. In Czech historiography, it is the first ever application of such a complex approach. It has made it possible not only to capture the continuity of the opinions on children and childhood, but at the same time to highlight the long-term constants of the monitored topic as well. The first chapter presented the opinions on the position of children in society. Precisely the intention to separate out the period observations related to childhood showed to be more than justified, because from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 18 th century we can work with a number of texts of an educational character, which expressed themselves to a great extent on childhood. Considerations or targeted tractates can be found in many theoretical-educational sources, in legal summaries or codes, but also in historiography or literature. On the pages of these works, childhood corresponded to the period mentality of the so-called proper society (pro bonum commune), into which the ideal of education and respect for the discovered and gradually codified law fell. The education idea, at the same time, was adopted from Antiquity, and in the Middle Ages inspired the creation of typologically similar works, called princely mirrors. The texts were usually personalized, intended for an individual-the future ruler. This genre did not fully exhaust itself with the actual period of the Middle Ages, because for instance John Amos Comenius also wrote the first two educational texts forthrightly for noblemen. He subsequently turned his interest to school as such, including preschool education in the family. The emerging trend, which resulted in the modern conception of the treatises known as theatrum mundi, but it is already clear in the Late Middle Ages, when the first work appeared with a broader scope of the description of society, including children. Particularly, the opus Ykonomika by the priest in Regensburg Conrad of Megenberg from the middle of the 14 th century provided a view even of the children of the

El artículo aborda la cuestión de la legitimidad dinástica y los motivos subyacentes en el contexto histórico de la Navarra del siglo XV. Se plantea que más allá de la legitimidad, la rivalidad por el poder y los recursos económicos dentro del reino fueron los principales impulsores de los conflictos. Se analiza la vida de Menaut de Santa María, un personaje relevante en este contexto, y se cuestiona si su lealtad estuvo realmente con el príncipe y su causa, o si defendía sus propios intereses y los de su linaje.

Como miembro de un linaje bajomedieval en Navarra, Menaut tenía poca autonomía personal y su deber era defender su patrimonio, tanto material como inmaterial, y mantener su posición en la corte. Aunque el príncipe mostraba generosidad, la división causada por el conflicto dinástico amenazaba lo logrado hasta ese momento.

Se plantea el dilema de si Menaut estaba consciente de la derrota del príncipe al viajar a Barcelona, lo que podría sugerir una lealtad personal más allá de los intereses materiales. El artículo también hace referencia al contexto histórico más amplio de Navarra, describiendo un reino soberano extendido a ambas vertientes del Pirineo, con antiguos linajes dedicados al servicio al rey y reliquias que evocan su esplendor pasado.

“Catharina Friedrich, uneheliche Tochter von Herzog John Friedrich (1542-1600), und ihr Schicksal. Ein Beitrag zur Genealogie der Greifen”.

Das Kind von Johann Friedrich wurde von Joachim von Wedel in die Geschichte eingeführt. Dieser schrieb nämlich im „Hausbuch“, dass der im Jahr 1600 verstorbene Herrscher seine uneheliche Tochter – deren Namen er nicht nannte – mit dem Höfling (cammerdiener) Hans Rambow (1564-1613) verheiratete. Anhand der Analyse der Trauerpredigt von Pastor Joachim Praetorius bei Rambows Beerdigung sowie der Dokumente im Archiv der Stettiner Herzöge und der Stiftung der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria in Stettin sowie der derzeit im Evangelischen Zentralarchiv in Berlin aufbewahrten Kirchenbücher der Stettiner Marienpfarrei konnten die grundlegenden biographischen Tatsachen ermittelt werden: Die Tochter des Herzogs wurde zwischen 1567 und 1578 geboren; in den Quellen erscheint sie als Catharina Friderich (Friedrich). Sie heiratete im Jahr 1592. Die Hochzeit fand in Johann Friedrichs Lieblingsresidenz in Podlesie (Friedrichswalde) statt. Sie brachte neun Kinder zur Welt. Sie starb an der Wende vom Mai zum Juni des Jahres 1625 in Stettin und wurde am 3. Juni 1625 in der Krypta der Marienkirche an der Seite ihres Ehemannes beigesetzt.

The present work presents a biography of Don Felipe de Aragón y Navarra (ca. 1455- 1488), who was Grand Master of Montesa. He was the first bastard son of the Prince of Viana. His case is a very good model of how the Aragonese Trastámara placed their illegitimate offspring at dawn of Early Modern Age. Don Felipe was directed into Church from his youth. He obtained the archbishopric of Palermo in 1476, which resigned in 1484 in order to become Order of Montesa’s Grand Master. His condition of ecclesiastical did not prevent him from taking part in the great conflicts of his time; indeed he died during Granada War. The study of his person allows understanding the relationships of the monarchy with the Church, Rome, the court and the royal family itself.

The Trastamara royal house is famous for its plentiful of illegitimate offspring. The
XV century in Europe is known as “the age of the bastards”, because in this time there were a lot of illegitimate children ocuppying the main power posts. This paper aims to show the main ideas about the bastard children of king John II, Charles the prince of Viana and Ferdinand the Catholic. The objective is to establish the characteristics between those royal bastards, because they have not been studied. Our study appears that normally men were destined for religious life and the women to marriage with members of the high nobility.

`An ‘egg dropped on the sand’ is an encrypted phrase that appears in Mary Wollstonecraft's *The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria*.    In  search of a decryption key, I leafed through the oversized folios, which testify to the splendors of eighteenth-century natural history, with their sumptuous bindings and hand-colored plates, as well as through the more diminutive, illustrated volumes that made this science accessible to a broader readership in that age.  The more that I looked at these primary source materials, I began to grasp that what was missing from their pages was as telling as what was visible.  Eighteenth-century naturalists rarely chose to depict eggs, of any type, in their published work.  I had opened their volumes, expecting to find images of mother birds devotedly sitting upon their nests, with their male mates hovering nearby.  Without a doubt, the ornithological plates that John James Audubon began to publish in the l820s--many of which feature birds in social and familial groups—had imprinted themselves on my mind.  Once I took the cue from *The Wrongs of Woman*, I began to find sketches and engravings of eggs, dating from the l700s, which present somewhat of a shock to the eye.  The unmonitored eggs, which appear in these plates, are laid by reptiles, rather than by birds, and are ‘dropped’ by design, rather than by accident.  Depending on the species, a mother-reptile deposits eggs like these, in a nest that she never visits again, or that she leaves untended for extended periods of time.  In either case, she is initiating a process of incubation, whereby her clutch of eggs will be ‘vivified by the heat of the sun’; within thirty to sixty days, `the young ones [will] begin to break open the shell[s]’ and exit the nest.  Whether eighteenth-century naturalists, who depicted such ‘dropped’ eggs, were conforming to a set of biological facts or not, they intended to suggest that the hatchlings, which emerge from such shells, give birth to themselves.
    Naturalists of this age were clearly intrigued by this method of reproduction--common to oviparous species such as the sea turtle, the alligator, the crocodile, and the caiman—and they felt compelled to document the interactions between the adults and the juveniles of such species.    With the aim of setting Mary Wollstonecraft's *The Wrongs of Woman* in relation to texts and images like these, I will trace a cultural time-line that begins in the late l720s and extends into the late l790s.

This article examines the legendary birth-tale of Ptolemy I Soter. Rather than Lagus, several late authorities claim that Ptolemy’s father was in fact Philip II, who had married his pregnant mistress Arsinoe off to Lagus. In addition to examining the details of this birth legend, and analyzing the ancient evidence and modern scholarly opinions on Ptolemy’s paternity, I also discuss similar birth tales about Alexander the Great and his Successors. In the last part, I explore the possible significance of Ptolemy’s birth tale in the context of the so-called “Birth of the Hero” paradigm, in order to illustrate its importance as an aetiological myth.

La stratégie militaire la plus élémentaire en use pour que les corps d'une même armée coordonnent leurs mouvements. La diplomatie l'exige pour se donner des alliés. À l'inverse, utiliser de fausses lettres fait partie d'un stratagème pour vaincre l'ennemi. en 1096, par exemple, l'anglo-normand gérald de Windsor, dont le château de pembroke (dyfed) est assiégé par les gallois, fait tomber entre leurs mains une missive portant son sceau, qui communique à son seigneur arnoul de montgomery de ne pas lui envoyer des renforts ni de l'approvisionner, car il peut tenir largement pendant quatre mois : découragés à sa lecture, les assaillants lèvent le siège, alors qu'en réalité la faible garnison du château avait épuisé sa nourriture 1. La correspondance entre deux ennemis peut être moins biaisée ou mensongère. directe et rugueuse, elle entretient leur haine en vue des combats ou, au contraire, cantonne leur violence au simple échange verbal par courriers interposés. cet exutoire à la colère évite parfois l'affrontement armé. il prépare des négociations qui aboutiront à l'issue pacifique du conflit. Les deux lettres éditées et traduites ici ont été échangées entre deux adversaires. autour de 1142, en pleine guerre de succession à la couronne anglaise, Henri de Blois (1098-1171), évêque de Winchester et légat pontifical, frère du roi Étienne, reproche à Brian fitz comte († 1150/1151), un fidèle de l'impératrice mathilde, d'attaquer ses terres et les marchands qui se rendent à sa foire. il le menace de le placer parmi les infideles Anglie, autrement dit de l'excommunier. seule une dizaine de lignes de cette lettre, dont la fin semble tronquée, sont conservées à ce jour. dans sa longue réponse, Brian fitz comte justifie son action par sa loyauté indéfectible envers la fille d'Henri i er (1100-1135), le roi défunt auquel il doit tout. il fonde, entre autres, la légitimité de son action sur le fait que c'est précisément son correspondant Henri de Blois lui-même qui lui a naguère demandé de suivre l'impératrice. La lettre entame aussitôt une longue digression historique, rappelant la première croisade et « nos illustres ancêtres », « nobles et hommes

Henri d’Angoulême (1551-1586), fils naturel du roi de France Henri II, a longtemps été oublié par les historiens. Pourtant, il fut le premier bâtard royal français à occuper des charges importantes : abbé de la Chaise-Dieu, grand prieur dans l’Ordre de Malte, puis général des galères et gouverneur de Provence. Erudit, mécène et poète, il fut une figure importante de la République des lettres, mais eut également une réputation d’homme violent et cruel. Grâce à une documentation internationale, ce livre retrace l’ascension d’un individu ambitieux qui apprit à surmonter le stigmate symbolique que constituait son illégitimité. Mais en adoptant également le point de vue de la monarchie française, des cercles humanistes et des dirigeants de l’Ordre de Malte, ou des acteurs politiques provençaux, ce travail étudie aussi la construction collective d’une identité sociale originale, celle de bâtard royal, qui entremêlait qualité princière et marginalité.

Compte tenu de l’ambiguïté de leur position sociale, les bâtards issus de la noblesse, et plus particulièrement ceux issus de la haute noblesse et des lignages princiers, ont bien entendu recours à des signes emblématiques pour se situer au sein de leur entourage et signifier leur identité et les droits afférents. Avant même le partage du nom, avant l’édition de lettres de reconnaissance et de légitimité, la concession d’armoiries spécifiques va permettre à ces individus de faire connaître et reconnaître le lien qui les unit à un prestigieux géniteur. Mais ce partage héraldique ne prend sens que par comparaison aux autres systèmes de délégation d’armoiries, aux parents et aux familiers notamment. L’évolution des mises en forme des armes des bâtards souligne d’ailleurs la modification de leur statut dans la société de la fin du Moyen Age où ils deviennent à la fois plus proches et plus distincts du lignage.

This essay aims at showing that ll. 582-606 of Euripides’ Ion alludes to the political figure of Pericles the Younger. Ion and Pericles’ son are reluctant to join the political stage because of their not entirely Attic ancestry. In particular, Pericles’ law of 451/450 BC prevented Pericles the Younger from being Athenian citizen, even though he was instated into the citizenship later thanks to a reform which took place in 430 BC. In the year 411 BC, a likely date for the performance of the play, when the Four Hundreds established an oligarchic government, Pericles the Younger was thirty-years old (or more) and, as argued in the essay, he could take part in political activity but he was hesitant and this attitude of his was shown by the character of Ion in Euripides’ tragedy and by a line of Eupolis’ Demoi. Even Xenophon was concerned with the figure of Pericles the Younger (Men. III,5) after the trial of the Arginusae in which the latter had been put to death.

Les enfants illégitimes de la noblesse ont pu être appelés à jouer un rôle important dans les conflits dans l'Europe moderne. En marge de la parenté, ce statut leur a donné une plus grande liberté dans le choix du service du prince, pour ne pas subir une position dans un système politique ou familial. Ainsi, nombre de bâtards étrangers font la guerre loin de leur terre natale. D'autres, en revanche, ont su tirer partie de la situation, pour asseoir une position qu'ils pensent leur être due comme agent diplomatique ou soldat. En l'absence de la reconnaissance espérée, le bâtard oublie les liens du sang, et le condottiere passe à l'ennemi, et le plénipotentiaire se fait espion. L'instrumentalisation des liens familiaux n'a pas toujours résisté aux ambitions individuelles, surtout en période de troubles.

La question des bâtards royaux aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles révèle les tensions impliquées par la nature dynastique du régime monarchique français. Pour les placer dans la continuité d’une idéologie politique qui exalte l’appartenance à la dynastie royale, le souverain insiste sur la filiation qui unit ses enfants naturels à sa personne ; pour autant, il n’en écarte par leur mère – pourtant rappel immuable de leur origine illégitime – ce qui permet, en empruntant les voies coutumières de la transmission en ligne directe et maternelle, de leur assurer un premier patrimoine territorial et honorifique.
