In political science and in development cooperation, civic organisations (COs) under authoritarian rule are usually seen as supporters of processes that move towards democratisation. However, these organisations are sometimes criticised for their support of those in power. Within this context, critics refer to the fact that many COs have, for example, authoritarian intra-organisational structures. This characteristic clearly limits their potential to be supporters of democratisation processes. In this paper, we proceed from the assumption that Vietnamese COs can be both supporters of democracy and organisations that help to maintain authoritarian rule; they can sometimes even be both at the same time. COs are “polyvalent” (Kößler). This article studies the political behavior of an Indonesian Islamist party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). Critics have argued that there are undemocratic elements in the PKS ideology -such as mixing religion with politics and its perceptions on gender equality and religious pluralism -and thus its participation in democratic politics seems to be neither serious nor sustainable. Applying North's theory of new institutionalism, this research found that ideology is dominant as a guideline for party behavior whenever the formal institutions are ineffective, and it will be less so when the formal rules of the game function properly.

SOI is now being widely discussed due to the increasing environmental and social problems that accompany various innovations around the world. In this paper we conducted a systematic review of empirical literature regarding SOI in the Asia Pacific region, which were discussed through network perspectives. For network perspectives, researchers focused on process view to explain how SOI is mobilised and practised throughout different social, institutional, and political contexts. This article assesses the knowledge of, attitudes towards, and aspirations for ASEAN among Thai university students, who are set to enter the ASEAN Community labour market and are among those most in touch with ASEAN issues. It uses data obtained from a countrywide survey and focus group discussions to identify variables that affect knowledge, attitudes, and aspirations and to explore the relationships between knowledge, attitudes, and aspirations. The quantitative analysis conducted here uses students’ fields of study, academic performance, and exposure to both ASEAN-related courses and also information and discussions about ASEAN in the mass media and public forums as predictors of their level of knowledge about ASEAN. The paper&#39;s results confirm that positive attitudes towards ASEAN lead to positive aspirations for ASEAN. Food insecurity and hunger continue to threaten the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. Many of today&#39;s food crises are linked to violent conflicts in various ways. The number of people affected by conflictdriven food crises increased from 74 million in 2018 to more than 77 million one year later—particularly in north-eastern Nigeria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen. The achievement of food security ending hunger and malnutrition and enabling sustainable agriculture production as addressed by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 &#39;Zero Hunger&#39; depends therefore largely on progress made on SDG 16 in promoting peaceful and inclusive societies.

The article "Democratic Articulations of Cultural Identity: The Arts in Afghanistan" discusses the hypothesis that artists can become protagonists of a new democratic culture through the possibility they have of creatively shaping the public sphere. Artists in post-war societies find themselves confronted with the experience of being marginalized, ridiculed and prosecuted. The artists' creativity is one strategy they use in finding new ways of coping with unbearable situations. The paper concludes with an interpretation on how artists experience democracy as an area of conflict.

Being a self-identified feminist is controversial among women&#39;s rights activists and scholars. This relates to different interpretations of and positive and negative associations with the term &#39;feminist&#39; in society. The research presented here discusses the different &#39;feminist&#39; identities and other labels among activists and scholars at Indonesian universities and explores what &#39;feminist&#39; means for them. Respondents come from Pusat Studi Wanita (Centres for Women&#39;s Studies) or Pusat Studi Gender (Centres for Gender Studies) at six universities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Many respondents acknowledge that Western feminists are able to raise awareness of gender issues, strengthen feminist identity, and build up faith in Islam. The paper, however, also addresses the question of why some reject the &#39;feminist&#39; label.

This article approaches domestic tourism in Vietnam from a native Asian perspective aiming to examine Vietnamese domestic travel motivations. This quantitative study is based on a self-administered questionnaire to survey 230 Vietnamese domestic travellers. Results highlight the significant roles of the employer sponsoring the trip, family, travel promotion, and favourable weather in determining travel, in addition to their motivations to seek time for leisure and recreation. Moreover, the study detected a perception gap between the tourist’s demand and the travel agent’s supply. The behaviour of Vietnamese domestic travellers refl ects the characteristics of a transition economy and reveals certain aspects which are also peculiar to other Asian countries.

Eine von den aussichtsvollen ist die Radio Frequenz Identifizierung (RFID), die die Überwachung von Wachstums-, Verarbeitungs-, Transportund Lagerverhältnissen ermöglicht. Im Obstbauzentrum Gačnik prüfen wir in der Zusammenarbeit mit dem slowenischen Unternehmen IDS, der Technologien im Obstbau. Was ist RFID? Die Hauptfunktion der RFID-Systeme ist die automatische Identifikation von Gegenständen, Personen und Tiere. Massenhaft werden sie in den Zutrittskontrollanlagen, im öffentlichen Verkehr für die elektronischen Fahrkarten, in der Logistik für die Verfolgung von Sendungen, für biometrische Reisepässe, Geldkarten, Kennzeichnung von Medikamenten und Tiere, von Bibliotheken, Spielhäusern und anderen verwendet. In der Landwirtschaft ermöglicht das RFID-System eine automatische Erfassung von psychischen und chemischen Parameter mit Hilfe von Smart-Tags (eng. smart label), befestigt auf das Objekt, das überwacht werden soll.

Die ethnologischen Untersuchungen von Christian Sigrist in &#39;Regulierte Anarchie&#39; (1967) haben die deutschsprachigen Forschungen zur Sozialgeschichte des alten Israel in den letzten Jahrzehnten wesentlich beeinflusst, und sein Ansatz wurde auch in zahlreichen theologischen Arbeiten weiterentwickelt. Thailand is undoubtedly growing in popularity as a tourist destination and is advertised in multiple tourism brochures and travel guidebooks. Despite its exotic appeal, a large number of tourists decide to experience it from inside all-inclusive hotels and resorts with little contact with the local population. Nonetheless there are a growing number of individual travellers trying to discover the country’s treasures off the beaten track, equipped with backpack and camera on the search for ‘the untouched’. Research in tourism has shown that tourists increasingly demand ‘authentic’ experiences (Butcher, 2003, MacCannell, 1999, & Wang, 1999). You can buy a train ticket in Bielefeld to board a train for Beijing via Moscow or you can drive your car from Rome to Shanghai via Tashkent. The division of this vast area into two continents is a pure fiction of the imagination of the human mind, a social and cultural construction of geographical space. The history of this division can be traced and historically explained, but still it is an imaginary, but powerful concept that draws boundaries and maintains distinctions.

21st-century Islam is increasingly influenced from Pakistan, as other Islamic nations are either too small (e.g. Turkey) or too isolated (e.g. Indonesia). Approximately 69 percent of the world’s Muslims live in Asia, around 50 percent in South and Southeast Asia. With the “Asian turn” in processes of globalization and the Asian shift of global Islam, South Asian Islam is now more engaged with the wider world than ever before. Repetitive transnational missionary trips by laymen have become an Islamic ritual with enormous growth rate in recent years. This practice involving spiritual transformation through itinerant preaching has a strong attraction for Muslim youths. In its modern form it was shaped in South Asia by agents of translocal Islamic missionary movements, such as the Tablīghī Jamāʿat and more recently its Barelwī counterpart Daʿwat-e Islāmī. This paper describes the two organizations in detail and explains the pull they have on young Pakistanis today.
