Scheppernde Sounds, lautes Benehmen, schrille Mode: Der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts einsetzende Wandel der Jugendkultur wurde von den Zeitgenossen als Kultur-bruch beschrieben. Aber während sie die neuen Sounds, Bilder und Körperpraktiken um 1956 noch kriminalisierten, galten sie ihnen zehn Jahre später als selbstverständ-licher Teil der bunten neuen pop society. Deren Entstehung in ihren transnationalen Verflechtungen und zeithistorischen Kon-texten zu analysieren, ist das Hauptanliegen dieses Buches.

The Modern Language Association's Division on the History and Theory of Rhetoric and Composition had invited me to contribute a paper on the topic of "Rhetoric as a New Paradigm for English Studies" for the 2014 annual meeting of the MLA in Chicago. While the other participants at the session, Douglas Hesse (University of Denver), Peter Leslie Mortensen (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), and Michael Bernard-Donals (University of Wisconsin, Madison), focused on illustrative examples of the cultural work rhetoric can do within the "English" paradigm, my own proposition as the only "English literature" person now at a major technological research institution turned out somewhat more radical. My thought experiment asked whether we need "English" departments at all, extending previous deliberations published in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

TV series are increasingly popular media and thus strong carrier for ideology. This thesis analyses the TV series Grimm which is inspired by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. The dominant ideology in Grimm is an ideology of difference: the American self is established by contrasting it to an opposite. The unknown cultural values of this other fuel the fear of the different other. This is expressed through supernatural beings called "Wesen" which occur in the series and symbolize negative personality traits which are in addition connected with other cultures. More specifically, many characters are depicted as German and Austrian. Therefore, the most common German and Austrian stereotypes will be categorized in this thesis. Also, the thesis investigates how the German language is used to stress this difference. Last, mythological creatures in the series will be compared to the ones described by the Brothers Grimm and it will be analyzed if they hold stereotypes of races and cultures, gender and social classes.

1960'da Ankara'da yayın hayatına başlayan Diriliş, 1992 yılına kadar yedi devre halinde faaliyet göstermiştir. Altıncı devre dışındaki yayın dönemlerinde haftalık yayın organı olarak Türk düşünce ve edebiyat hayatına hizmet etmiş­ tir. İkinci dünya savaşı sonunda insanlığın tecrübe ettiği manevi buhran, Türkiye özelinde entelektüel çevrelerden taşıp halkı da içine alacak bir dalgaya dönüşmüştür. Sezai Karakoç, aralarında ortak duyuş özellikleri bulunan düşünce adamları ve edebiyatçılarla birlikte Türk milletinin yüz yüze kaldığı bu manevi inkıraz için çözüm yolları arama iddiasındadır.

Diriliş, bu manevi buhranın temel saiklerini sorgularken Batı dünyasına
ait dinamikleri göz önünde bulundurmuş ve sorgulamıştır. Batılı isimler, düşünce boyutunda değerlendirildiği gibi edebi verimleri ile de derginin sayfalarında yer bulmuştur. Çalışmamızda derginin haftalık olarak yayımlanan sayıları ele alınmıştır.

İncelemenin ilk aşamasında Sezai Karakoç'un biyografisi ışığında, onun Batı düşünce ve edebiyatına yönelişi incelenmiştir. Bu esnada Karakoç'un yabancı dil eğitimine ve aldığı eğitimi ileri seviyeye taşımak için hangi kaynaklardan istifade ettiğine değinilmiştir. Daha sonra ise Diriliş'in kurucusu olacak

Karakoç'un öğrencilik yıllarından itibaren süregelen dergicilik faaliyetlerine dikkat çekilmiştir. Bu sayede onun Diriliş'i tesis ederken Batı düşüncesine dair tecessüsünün beslendiği bilgi ve birikim göz önüne serilmiştir. İncelemenin ikinci aşamasında ise tayin edilen başlıklar altında düşünceler, olgular ve eserler değerlendirilmiştir..

The book is the most important mass medium in human history. What is the reason for its success? The book's efficacy as a medium relies on its constitutive and material properties. And it is above all its typography and design that affect the reader. But how can its visual and material qualities be arranged so as to intentionally produce specific effects according to the author's or editot's persuasive purpose? In order to answer this question about the book's rhetoric of media, this paper adopts three approaches. First, a brief historical overview charts the functions and effectiveness of the book as a mass medium. Secondly, a comparison between Classical oratorical techniques and the book's visual and typographic practices proves they have extensive rhetorical principles and strategies in common. Finally, the works of two authors fiom different ages – Alexander von Humboldt and Jonathan Safran Foer – serve as practical examples to illustrate how the book's typographic and design features can be understood as genuinely rhetorical.
