This paper addresses the lack of solid historical information concerning early computer game sales and preferences. Two consistent data series from the magazines Softalk and Computer Gaming World (CGW) are analyzed to give an overview of the best selling and best rated games by players for the period of 1980-1984. A “genre palette ” is inferred from the sources, giving a snapshot of how contemporaries framed and interpreted the offer in computer games. A comparison of the series reveals the CGW readership constitutes a distinct “hardcore ” play community amongst general computer game players. It is also observed that genre preferences vary in time: arcade games peak in 1982 and then recede in favor of computer-native genres. A brief comparison with Atari 2600 best sellers reveal the inadequacy of the computer game genre palette to describe home console games. The historical and constructed nature of genres as “horizons of expectations ” is discussed.

A diversidade temática, característica que perpassa as obras de Agamben, implica possíveis diferentes matizes através das quais se pode aproximar e abordar suas obras: elas não são um domínio exclusivo da filosofia, sendo discutidas também pelas ciências sociais e pelos braços que delas derivam, pela ciência da religião e pela teologia, pela ciência política e pelo direito. Isso é possível porque o conteúdo trazido por Agamben está vinculado à interpretação dos problemas contemporâneos, que, por sua vez, exigem distintas abordagens para que sejam compreendidos em sua integralidade. A aventura (L'avventura), obra originalmente publicada na Itália em 2015, não foge a essa caracterização geral.

To test whether commercial tourism products in different adventure activity sectors have different functional characteristics, I took part in tours offered by 75 operators worldwide and analysed price per person per day, duration, prior skill requirements, remoteness, group size and client-toguide ratios. There is an enormous range of variation. Some activities overlap but some are clearly distinguishable, on commercial as well as operational criteria. Products can be arranged on a scale from low-volume, high-difficulty, high-price to high-volume, low-difficulty, low-price. There are recognisable signatures for some subsectors, but not all.

This paper explores the notion of heroic leadership in a comparison of two men who were at the forefront of national and imperial success in the mountains of the Himalaya – Colonel John Hunt and Chris Bonington. The historical and ideological relationship between national enterprise and normative (‘heroic’) types of masculinity will be interrogated through a study of Hunt, whose leadership led to success for Tenzing and Hillary on the first ascent of Everest in 1953, and Bonington, who was responsible for the first British ascent of Everest, by its South West Face, in 1975. It will argue that in both cases qualities of manliness were intrinsic to their selection as leaders. However, their selection and social construction as heroic leaders came at the expense of others who deviated from norms and expectations of the aristo-military imperial adventurer. Using autobiographies, biographies and expedition accounts, this chapter discusses the accommodation of a tradition of English national hero alongside other types of male adventurer whose motivations and ambitions in climbing at high-altitude point to different traditions and subcultural experiences.

It will also highlight the religious tolerance and coexistence as an important thematic dimension of the story of Amir Hamza.

Mountains are attractive as tourism destinations. Mountaineering is a long established adventure sport predicated on physical activity, challenge, and risk-taking. It has been, hitherto, the preserve of an experienced elite whose approach is epitomized by self-reliance and independent operation in such destinations. Social boundaries separating mountaineers from tourists are becoming blurred. Existing tourist theory fails to capture the subtleties of emergent mountain-based tourism. Adventure tourism has accelerated a discernible move towards the commodification of mountains. Evidence suggests a dilution of the essential ingredients of “being a mountaineer” as a result of a democratization process facilitated by the arrival of some urban characteristics in wild mountain regions.La naissance du tourisme d’aventure basé sur la montagne. La montagne est une destination touristique attrayante. L’alpinisme est un sport d’aventure qui est établi depuis longtemps et qui est fondé sur l’activité physique, le défi et le risque. Paul Tillich stated that salvation has as many meanings as there are negativities to require salvation from. A contemporary negativity is the profanization of life resulting from efforts to attain fulfillment by way of technological control. In response to this, a movement has developed that champions the spontaneity and risk of adventure as a road to fulfillment. This paper makes use of Tillich’s concepts of “structure” and “depth” to argue that in a culture dominated by merely structural awareness, adventure, though not without its own ambiguity (the demonic), does serve as an opening to the depth of life, and therefore the possibility of salvation.

Adventure often defined in terms of categories that did not exist at the time of its making. The concept of video games as the cultural institution we know today was alien to its authors. This article reframes Adventure in its historical context. If it is not yet an adventure game, what is it? The proposed methodology is inspired by the work of early cinema historians and consists of identifying the cultural practices within which an early piece was developed. Adventure is analyzed as a program, a hack, fantasy role-playing, a cave survey, and a game. This approach delivers a new perspective on Adventure, freed to some degree of teleological preconceptions.

Discussions surrounding environmental issues span multiple fields, promoting different ways to relate to the theme. The multiplicity of meanings resulting from these encounters should be analyzed regarding the processes of symbolic dispute in which they are formulated, among them, the environmentalization of curricula in higher education. Thus, this article, sustained by theoretical research, aims to analyze how the insertion of the environmental dimension is being structured in physical education in Brazilian higher education. To this end, the article was divided into four parts, showing: a) elements of curricular environmentalization in higher education; b) some particularities of physical education, considering it an area of knowledge; c) the role of nature activities in the environmentalization of physical education curricula; d) the final considerations, seeking to understand the processes of environmentalization of physical education curricula in Brazilian higher education.

This paper reports the findings of the first interdisciplinary study of Scotland's adventure tourism sector which is now promoted as one of the new drawcards for domestic and overseas visitors by the National Tourism Organisation-VisitScotland. An analysis of a national survey of adventure activity operators highlights the development of this sector, the characteristics of operators, the way their businesses have been developed and the significance of independently owned and managed small firms in this sector. The survey also examined the characteristics of visitors and markets using adventure tourism products provided by these businesses and the safety issues which these operators faced in managing these types of activities. Based on data collected and application of research techniques from safety management, the injury rates among participants in these activities are reviewed. The growth potential and possible obstacles to this nascent industry sector in Scotland are also examined. r

The present study employed classification, based on psychological differences, which posits eight occupational fields: Business, Organization, General-Cultural, Service, Arts and Entertainment, Outdoor, Science, and Technology. These fields have been found, in more than 25 studies (see , to display a circular structure. However, an additional group of occupations, entitled Tension, Adventure, and Risk (TAR), does not figure as a separate field in existing occupational classifications, including Roe's. The objective of this investigation was to determine whether TAR constitutes a separate field (Hypothesis 1) or a separate dimension, a differentiation within other fields (Hypothesis 2). Following procedures designed by L. Guttman (1968) and others, namely the SSA and the External Variables module, the findings support the second hypothesis. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

A fter critique, reading. This essay participates in the "return" to reading and responds to recent invitations to explore the "lived experience of reading" and "uncritical reading" practices. Of course literary critics have never ceased to read, but recently there have been renewed calls to take a look, another look, at the activity of reading as such, as a part of a more general questioning of our habitual critical methodologies.2 Here I broach the possibility of releasing ourselves from dated pledges by exploring some less imperative ways to think about reading. Let's not always historicize.

The final three chapters examine lawyers and litigants. S. J. Payling analyzes the murders of three lawyers and MPs who were killed because their opponents in land disputes perceived the victims' legal and political power as an insurmountable threat. His findings suggest that the Crown and gentry accepted violent action as a last resort in irreconcilable disputes. Violence and legal action were also recourses for late medieval townsmen, as David Grummitt demonstrates in his chapter on conflicts between the citizenry and monastic houses of Canterbury, in particular the Rosier riot of 1500 led by the lawyer and MP William Atwode. Grummitt develops an image of a citizenry united by a shared civic identity, mobilized by lawyerly leaders in pursuit of the town's interests. In the final chapter, Deborah Youngs examines the nature of litigation brought before the king's council by women under Henry VII (1457-1509). Youngs argues that the Star Chamber was particularly attractive to women due to its broad jurisdiction, speed, and willingness to waive the laws of coverture. By analyzing female plaintiffs' legal strategies and self-presentation, Youngs shows how determined and savvy Tudor women could be as they pursued redress. Together, these essays illustrate many of the methods and sources available to historians interested in "finding individuality" in fifteenth-century Britain. The volume does, however, focus narrowly on royals and the gentry. Late medieval and early modern records are rich in detail about nonelite individuals like Alice Steward, a husbandman's wife who laid a case before the king's council (136), but they appear only fleetingly in Grummitt's and Youngs's essays, and nowhere else in the collection. The authors and editors are to be commended for whetting readers' appetites for further explorations of the fascinating characters of fifteenth-century Britain.

This study aimed at examining the effects of an outdoor educational intervention on the mental health of schoolchildren. Two elementary schools participated (N = 230); one experimental school where the intervention was implemented, and the other a reference school. Demographic questions and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire were completed by the parents. An outdoor educational intervention was implemented at the experimental school, and the data collection was repeated after one year. The results point towards a small but non-significant improvement in mental health at the experimental school while adjusting for demographics. However, this effect was significantly moderated by gender: boys generally fared better than girls at the intervention school, relative to the reference school. The results indicate that it may be important to address gender issues when educational programmes are implemented in schools.

This paper focuses on the music and sound effects of the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop for the first episode of Doctor Who, now commonly referred to as An Unearthly Child (first transmitted November, 1963). The programme’s musical effects support its visual landscaping in helping to create a grammar of strange-familiarity that both evokes the timespace of 1963-London as well as subverts it. This timespace is already mediated through the ‘common myths and historical memories’ of England (Smith 1991) and John Reith’s high-minded broadcasting values (Crisell, 1997). Yet the auditory unsettles these ideological frames by submerging the listener into an encounter where the excess and instability of timespace exhorts the listener to think difference and becoming (Deleuze 1987). In search of adventure: Ladislav Mikeš Parízek, a Czech in the Congo Ladislav Mikeš Parízek's books, articles and lectures had a large impact on the image of the Congo as it existed in communist Czechoslovakia from the 1940s till the 1970s, but this Czech traveller and writer has almost been forgotten. Through an analysis of his works and of reviews of these works published in newspapers of the 1950s, the nature of the African discourse as it was created in communist Eastern Europe, as well as the (mis)use of this discourse by the ruling party, is revealed. Special attention will be paid to the illustrations accompanying his books, articles and lectures.

This article examines how "irregular" migrants from Western and Central Africa make sense of their trapped mobility in Morocco: for many, crossing into Europe has become almost impossible, returning to home countries "empty-handed" a shameful option, and staying very difficult in the face of repeated infringement of their rights. I explore the limits of contemporary depictions of a "migration crisis" that portray migrants south of the Mediterranean Sea as simply en route to Europe and fail to engage with post/colonial entanglements. The article recalibrates the examination of migrants' lived experiences of stasis and mobility by exploring the emic notion of "adventure" amongst migrants "looking for their lives." A focus on how migrants articulate their own (im)mobility further exposes and defies the pitfalls of abstract concepts such as "transit migration", which is misleading in its implication of a fixed destination.

This essay focuses on the adventure mode in relation to Clint Eastwood's American Sniper (2014). It argues that adventure is one the dominant narrative forms used to organize war stories in American culture today and that American Sniper exemplifies its structure and most common conventions. Adventure as a mode is characterized by a fascination with the pleasurable aspects of violence; however, in US culture, this blatant pleasure in killing is often in tension with the preference of American audiences for a distinctly righteous violence necessitated by religious or moral imperatives.  Eastwood's film combines the pleasures of the adventure mode with the moral dictates of righteous violence by focusing on the hero's own suffering of PTSD and on the enemy's irredeemable savagery.

This article will be comparing the music between two similar adventure style games; Journey (2012), music by Austin Wintory, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (2013), music by Gustaf Grefberg. With interactive music and immersion becoming one of the biggest aspects of a video-game's soundtrack, it is important to review how different composers manage to apply these aspects within the music they create. Whilst both games are similar in story-line and game-play, the composers are seen to take both similar and different paths in creating immersion within the same scenarios. It must therefore be asked, how does the music differ? And, how successful is each composer's style in immersing a player within the game world?

Our purpose is to examine the possibilities of Bakhtinian dialogical analysis for understanding students’ experiences of medical training. Twenty-three interviews were conducted with eleven British medical students intercalating in psychology. Forty emotionally resonant key moments were identified for analysis. Our analysis illustrates students’ use of the professional genre to present their training as emotionally neutral. However, we show how medical training can be framed in more unofficial and affective-laden ways in which threshold moments of crisis are presented as space-time breaches characteristic of the genres of adventure-wonder and adventure-ordeal. This affect was often depotentiated in the narratives through brief allusion to the professional genre. This cycling between genres suggests that the students were searching for an appropriate way in which to frame their experiences, a central dilemma being the extent to which medical training makes sense within an immediate and affect-laden, or future-orientated and affect-neutral, pedagogy. Finally, we identify how consultants are an important aspect of the affective experience of medical training who, at their best, offer inspiring exemplars of flexible movement between official and unofficial ways of being a doctor. In conclusion, we demonstrate the potential of genres to make sense, and to organize the experience, of medical training spatially in terms of moving between personal and impersonal contact, temporally in terms of moving between the extraordinary and routine, and affectively in terms of moving between potent and neutral affect. Learning to use the professional genre is part of enculturation as a doctor and can be helpful in providing a framework restoring coherence and composure through engaging with, and reformulating, difficult experiences. However, it is important to take seriously the resistance many of the students demonstrated to the professional genre as a possible barometer of its acceptability to the general public.

The search for risk and danger in outdoor recreation activities is a phenomenon currently facing recreation managers. This study tested the validity of an adventure recreation model of participation. Using the level of engagement as the dependent variable, the model was effective in identifying the components of type of risk, level of risk, social orientation, locus of decisionmaking, frequency of participation, and preferred environment in the adventure recreation setting. It is suggested that the model can be used by managers and researchers in identifying the types of social, psychological, and physical environments that are preferred by adventure recreationalists relative to their level of experience and engagement in the activity.
