FERNÁNDEZ-GÖTZ, M.; Maschek, D. and Roymans, N. (2020): The Dark Side of the Empire: Roman Expansionism between Object Agency and Predatory Regime. Antiquity 94(378): 1630-1639. https://doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2020.125
This debate piece offers a critique of some recent ‘new materialist’ approaches and their application to Roman expansionism, particularly those positing that the study of ‘Romanisation’ should be about ‘understanding objects in motion’—a perspective that carries important political and ethical implications. Here, the authors introduce the alternative notion of a ‘predatory’ political economy for conceptualising Late Republican and Early Imperial Rome. The aim is to illuminate the darker sides of Roman expansionism in order to produce more balanced and inclusive accounts. Two cases studies—the archaeology of the Roman conquest and of rural communities—illustrate the potential of such a perspective.
This survey will introduce the student to the great religious traditions of the ancient Near East, approaching the faiths of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and their neighbors through the study of art, literature, architecture, and archaeological remains. Illustrated lectures, assigned reading, and class discussion will cover such subjects as creation myths and cosmologies, the daily cult, festivals, theological foundations of kingship and queenship, ethics, magic and medicine, and the development of personal piety. Learn to recognize the deities and their attributes, read the earliest recorded flood story, compare the ultimate fates of Egyptians and Babylonians in the afterlife, explore ancient temples, and meet their personnel, from the high priests to the ordinary clergy and support staff. After considering the interplay of religious traditions in the cosmopolitan Near Eastern world of the Bronze Age, the course concludes with an examination of Egyptian and Mesopotamian influence on the classical and Judeo-Christian heritage of the West.
Radiocarbon, 2023
In the absence of wood, bone, and other organics, one possible candidate for determining the age of a site is the radiocarbon (14 C) dating of pottery. In central Europe during the Early Neolithic, pottery was ubiquitous and contained substantial quantities of organic temper. However, attempts at the direct dating of organic inclusions raises a lot of methodological issues, especially when several sources of carbon contribute to the resulting radiocarbon age. Hence an alternative approach to dating of the early pottery is necessary. Here, we present a novel method of bulk separation of organic content from the grass-tempered pottery from Santovka (Slovakia). The procedure is based on the consecutive application of three inorganic acids, dissolving clay, silica content, and low molecular or mobile fractions to separate organic inclusions added to the pottery matrix during the formation of vessels. Radiocarbon dates obtained with this method are coherent and produce the shortest time span compared to other pretreatment methods presented in this study. The paired dates of grass-tempered pots with the 14 C age of lipids extracted from the same pots point to a difference of 400-600 14 C yr, however they are in line with the site's chronostratigraphic Bayesian model. Grasstempered pottery from Santovka (Slovakia) is dated to the first half of the 6th millennium cal BC, making it the earliest pottery north of the Danube. It seems feasible that ceramic containers from Santovka were produced by huntergatherers, and pottery predated the arrival of farming in the Carpathian region by a couple of centuries.

In The Beast and the Sovereign, Derrida's last seminar, Derrida criticizes Lacan for making no room for animality in the Other, in the unconscious transindividual normativity of language. In this paper, I take into account the history of Derrida's interactions with Lacan's psychoanalysis to argue that Derrida's early agreement with Lacan's conception of subjectivity as split by the signifier gives place in his late thought to a deconstruction of Lacan's fall into humanist metaphysics, which makes a sharp moral distinction between the animal and the human in order to subordinate animals to the domination of mankind.

The study aimed to determine the degree of faculty members' assessment of practicing transformational leadership in Palestinian universities in the southern governorates, and to explore whether there were statistically significant differences at a level (α≤0.05) attributed to these variables (type of college, academic rank, years of service). To achieve these objectives, the researchers followed the analytical descriptive method by administering a questionnaire consisting of (60) items divided into four areas on a sample of (101) faculty members from these universities (Al-Azhar-Islamic-Al-Aqsa). The results showed that the total degree of assessment of practicing transformational leadership from the point of view of the participants in the universities was medium with a relative weight of 55.93%. The area of independence and influence occupied the first place with a relative weight of 57.75%. The area of presenting a model behavior was ranked last with a relative weight of 54.31%. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences (α≤0.05) between the participants' means of assessment due to these variables: (type of college, rank, years of service). The study recommended enhancing the concepts of transformational discourse in universities based on mutual respect and appreciation of competencies, regardless of any other considerations.
