The general elections in India are just a few months away which would witness the largest democratic exercise in the world. All political parties have begun prioritising their strategies, which would be showcased through their respective political manifestos. The defeat of BJP in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh assembly elections have created ripples across the country, and it seems that there would be a tough battle amongst the parties in the upcoming elections. Although, there are several issues which would be of vital significance, some of them deserve more attention due to their key role in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.
General Elections 2019 in India, 2019
Over the past month and a half close to a billion people across the huge expanse of India have been engrossed in the newest addition of its five-yearly General Election that elects the members of the lower house of the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha, and in turn, the country’s Prime Minister. The sheer scale of the exercise, the level of public participation despite the oppressive mid-summer heat, the vibrant colours that light up the public rallies of popular political leaders, the speeches by politicians at these rallies extolling the virtues and accomplishments of their chosen political party while spewing fire against their opponents, these all contribute to making the exercise what The New York Times described as “the greatest show on earth”. General Elections in India are the real manifestation of India’s vaunted democracy. Importantly, they are also the important glue, along with the country’s federal structure, that binds the vastly diverse ethnic, linguistic, and religious mix of the country together.

Electronic voting machines are used to register votes, and winners are decided on first-past-the-post basis. There are seven national parties, 26 state parties and more than 2,000 smaller political parties registered for this year's election. The voting process will continue in seven phases till May 19th and the results will be declared on May 23rd.
BACKGROUND 2024-Lok Sabha election results is indeed historic, ground breaking, and have changed the political terrains of India. It is the world's largest election and at that time thought to be could also be one of its most consequential. As said it is indeed marked with all kinds of twists and turns, highs and lows, and thus volatile. India at that time had close to 970 million voters among its more than 1.4 billion people, pitched to exercise their franchise either to vote for the sitting PM Narendra Modi, an avowed Hindu nationalist, against a broad alliance of opposition parties that are struggling to replace PM Modi and BJP. The voters exercised their franchise to choose 543 members for the lower house (Lok Sabha) of parliament for a five-year term.

What drove this surprising electoral outcome and what implications is the election likely to have going forward? This paper discusses both the backdrop of the elections and the elections as such. It retraces the approaches to and changes in Modi’s governance models throughout his two first Premierships, which were characterized by generally positive economic performances (that were then heavily disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic) as well as the entrenchment of Hindu-nationalist ideology that alienated national minorities but was immensely popular among India’s Hindu majority. The paper then examines the outcome of the 2024 elections, highlighting the role economic concerns played in determining the outcome of the votes. It specifically zeroes in on the BJP’s lacklustre performance in Uttar Pradesh, India’s core battleground state and a key constituency for the BJP. Lastly, the paper provides a forecast on the election’s ramifications for India, the region, and New Delhi’s international relations over the coming years.

As Modi presses forward with majoritarian policies shaped by his Hindu nationalist views, multi-ethnic India will become increasingly divided. Attempts to homogenise the nation and secure the dominance of the Hindu majority and by extension, the BJP will have disastrous effects for the future of the biggest democracy on Earth.
