A multi-spectral photographic record was made using black and white, color r e v e r s a l , and false color infrared film. The pictographs are mainly zoomorphic and anthropomorphic representations. There is a slight similarity to some pictographs in eastern and southeastern Dominican Republic, but a precise correlation cannot be made at this point. The fact that there are perennial pools of water in the room with the most pictographs may be one of the reasons why they are found there. Water is not available year around in any of the other caves in the immediate area. The cliff area, where the cave is located, is a very rich micro-environment for food sources consisting of b i r d s ' nests (eggs), birds themselves, and also the mona iguana species that can be anywhere from 3 to 4 feet long. This zone was probably exploited and the cave used as a water source. Two rough stone tools were found in the vicinity of the cave. A RECONSIDERATION OF ISLAND CARIB CERAMICS Louis Allaire Most known documentary sources on the 16th and 17th centurylsland Caribs have been systematically reviewed to assemble the available information on the ceramics of the natives of the L e s s e r Antilles at the time of contacts. References to decoration are non existent, d e s criptions of shapes amount to one or two, but more was found on the sizes, capacities, functions and terminology of the pottery. From these, and through comparison with the historic Caribbean speaking groups of the coast of the Guianas, I have reached the conclusion that the pottery of the Island Caribs described by the Europeans was similar to that of the Guiana Indians for whom we have better documentation and illustrations. This conclusion means that the pottery of the Island Caribs was totally different from anything found in the archaeology. The only non pottery ceramic artifacts made by the Island Caribs was the clay griddle which was without the tall legs typical of the later complexes in the Lesser Antilles. THE POST-SALADOID SEQUENCE OF MARTINIQUE IN RELATION TO THE REST OF THE LESSER ANTILLES Louis Allaire In 1971-1972, and again in February 1974, the author excavated at 4 sites in Martinique, which yielded a sequence of 7 components. The components can be grouped within 3 ceramic complexes, all later than the Saladoid in that they lack white-on-red painting, zone incised cross-hatching and are technologically much cruder. Although only 2 carbon dates could be obtained for the latest complex, the 3 complexes can be tentatively dated as follows: L'Espérance complex, A. D. 750 to 950; the Paquemar complex, A. D. 950 to 1150, and the Macabou complex, A. D. 1150 to 1450, the latter date being more an indication that no definite occupation dating from the historic period could be determined. The 2 carbon dates come from the site of Pointe Macabou in the southeast of the island, and are both around A. D. 600, a date certainly inconsistent with our present knowledge of the style in the Lesser Antilles. The first 2 complexes seem to belong to an intermediate series which is closer to McKuzicks» Troumassoid of St. Lucia, while the Macabou complex is definitely Suazoid. I see no evidence of migrations to account for any of the complexes. The Troumassoid series seem to be limited to the Windward islands perhaps as far north as Guadeloupe. The Suazoid series is found from Tobago to, I think, not farther north than the south of Martinique. 315
