SYSTEM OPERATION
GENERAL
THE OXYGEN SYSTEM SUPPLIES GASEOUS OXYGEN AT LOW PRESSURE TO THE FLIGHT CREW AND SUPERNUMERARIES WHEN
FLIGHT CONDITIONS WARRANT ITS USE.
TWO HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN CYLINDERS ARE BELOW THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT FLOOR; SUPPLY SIX MASKS IN THE FLIGHT
COMPARTMENT.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
OXYGEN IS SUPPLIED TO THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT FROM A COMMON MANIFOLD ATTACHED TO TWO HIGH PRESSURE
CYLINDERS LOCATED ALONG THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FORWARD EQUIPMENT CENTER.
THE OXYGEN PRESSURE IS REDUCED TO 70 PSI FOR SUPPLY TO THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT, BY A PRESSURE REGULATOR ON
EACH CYLINDER.
A SHUTOFF VALVE IS ON EACH CYLINDER. THE VALVE ALLOWS OXYGEN TO BE TURNED OFF FOR CYLINDER REPLACEMENT OR
FOR SYSTEM MAINTENANCE.
EACH FLIGHT COMPARTMENT STATION HAS A DILUTER DEMAND MASK REGULATOR. EACH MASK IS STORED IN A CONTAINER
AND CAN BE TESTED WITHOUT REMOVING THE MASK.
CYLINDER PRESSURE IS SHOWN BY A PRESSURE GAUGE ON EACH CYLINDER. A TRANSDUCER ON EACH CYLINDER SENDS A
SIGNAL TO A VOLTAGE AVERAGING UNIT, WHICH PROVIDES THE AVERAGE PRESSURE BOTH CYLINDERS TO THE STATUS PAGE
OF EICAS.
LOCATION
THE CREW OXYGEN CYLINDERS ARE LOCATED OUTBOARD OF THE NOSE WHEEL WELL ALONG THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE
FUSELAGE IN THE FORWARD EQUIPMENT CENTER. EACH CYLINDER HAS A CAPACITY OF 114 CU FT OF OXYGEN.
A FLEXIBLE SHROUD COVERS THE UPPER OXYGEN CYLINDER. THE SHROUD PREVENTS ANY LAVATORY OR DRAIN LINE LEAKAGE
FROM COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE OXYGEN CYLINDERS AND ASSOCIATED HARDWARE.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
THE NORMAL CYLINDER CHARGE IS 1850 PSI AT 70 DEGREES F (21 DEGREES C). A FRANGIBLE DISK IN A FITTING ON THE
CYLINDER NECK PROVIDES FOR THERMAL RELIEF AT 2500 TO 2775 PSI.
LOCATED IN THE NECK IS A SHUTOFF VALVE, A DIRECT READING PRESSURE GAUGE, CONNECTIONS FOR THE REGULATOR AND
THE THERMAL DISCHARGE LINE.
THE RETAINING RACK TO SUPPORT A CYLINDER HAS ROLLERS TO ALLOW FORWARD AND AFT MOVEMENT OF THE CYLINDER.
EACH CYLINDER IS SECURED BY TWO RETAINING RINGS. THE AFT RING IS FIXED TO THE STRUCTURE. THE FORWARD RING CAN
BE RELEASED BY LOOSENING THE NUT ON THE “T” BOLT THAT HOLDS THE RING TO THE RETAINING STRAP. WHEN LOOSE THE
“T” BOLT CAN BE SLIPPED OUT OF THE SLOT IN THE STRAP. THE RING IS THEN REMOVED BY MOVING THE TOP FORWARD AND
LIFTING IT OFF THE PIVOT PIN. A LANYARD ATTACHED TO THE RING AND RACK KEEPS THE RING FROM BEING MISPLACED.
THE OVERBOARD DISCHARGE FITTING IS LOCATED OUTBOARD OF THE NOSE GEAR WHEEL WELL ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE
FITTING EXTENDS THROUGH THE FUSELAGE SKIN AND IS ATTACHED TO THE OXYGEN CYLINDER THERMAL DISCHARGE LINE.
THE FITTING HAS AN O’RING SEAL, GREEN INDICATOR DISK AND SNAP RING.
DURING THE WALK AROUND INSPECTION THE DISK IS CHECKED. IF THE DISK IS MISSING THE CYLINDERS SHOULD BE CHECKED
FOR DISCHARGE INDICATIONS.
THE O’RING SEAL KEEPS OUT MOISTURE AND MUST BE INSTALLED PRIOR TO REPLACING THE INDICATOR DISK. THE SNAP RING
HOLDS THE DISK IN PLACE IN THE FITTING.
POWER IS SUPPLIED FROM THE 28 VOLT DC RIGHT BUS TO BOTH PRESSURE TRANSDUCERS.
THE TRANSDUCERS SENSE OXYGEN PRESSURE BETWEEN THE CYLINDER AND REGULATOR AND CONVERTS THIS TO AN
ELECTRICAL SIGNAL WHICH IS SUPPLIED TO THE VOLTAGE AVERAGING UNIT. THE VOLTAGE AVERAGING UNIT AVERAGES BOTH
TRANSDUCER SIGNALS AND PROVIDES EICAS WITH A SINGLE VALUE THAT REPRESENTS AVERAGE SYSTEM PRESSURE.
THE OXYGEN CYLINDER PROVIDES GASEOUS OXYGEN AT THE HIGH PRESSURE (1850 PSI AT 70 DEGREES F) TO THE PRESSURE
REDUCING REGULATOR.
