This weekend was a four-day fall break weekend, which was super enjoyable. We only get Thursday and Friday off for fall break here in Utah, but that's OK because we get a longer summer vacation than some states that get an entire week off in the fall. Here is what our long weekend was like.
Charly always does our weekly grocery shopping early Thursday mornings. This week I went with him. Because we were early, we encountered lots of empty aisles so we were finished fairly quickly. I was surprised at how low our final food bill was. Charly is a careful shopper (we both are actually) and we plan most of meals around sale items and manager's specials, so we have been able to keep our food bill manageable, even with inflation.
After shopping and lunch, we went for an abbreviated walk. It was an absolutely lovely fall day. When we had gone only a mile, we got a call from our contractor and we need to meet with him, so I finished my daily workout time later on the equipment in my basement.
Later, we spent some time over at our house, painting our gazebo/covered porth area. This was my little area to paint. We worked for almost two hours Thursday afternoon.
Saturday morning, Charly and I went for a morning walk. We then headed down to Utah County to spend the day.
There was a new-to-us Asian place we wanted to try for lunch. I got Mongolian Beef and Charly got General Tso Chicken. The food was delicious. We now have a new favorite Asian place.
After lunch, we went back to Pioneer Book, the used bookstore we went to last week. They were having a sale - 40% off all their fiction - so we just had to check that out.
After Pioneer Book, we went to a couple of thrift stores, including this one that was new-to-us and huge.
Charly found several books he wanted and I found these three. I am trying to complete a whole set of C.J. Box books. Box is an excellent mystery author whose books are set in and around the Western U.S. - places I am at least somewhat familiar with.
Thursday evening we got a text from Josh asking us to send him something he needed. Charly and I talked about it and decided that we would just drive up to Idaho on Saturday to take Josh what he needed. It's only about a three hour drive, and we are always up for a little road trip.
We had a leisurely drive, took some back roads and stopped at a few places along the way. We met Josh at his apartment when we got to Rexburg late Saturday afternoon. (Josh had told us not to get to Rexburg too early in the afternoon because he had a date and would not be able to meet us. That was just fine with us. 😉).
After picking up Josh, our next stop was our favorite restaurant in town, Righteous Slice Pizza. The pizza there is so good!
After dinner, we took Josh to do some grocery shopping.
Finally, we dropped Josh off at his apartment and Charly and I went back to the motel where we were staying. We had a very nice visit, even though it wasn't long. Josh really likes going to school at BYU Idaho. He is working hard, enjoying his classes, and making some friends. He has some good professors and is learning a lot. It's always good to see Josh and find out what is going on with him. He keeps in touch every week, but is busy with work and school, and his texts are pretty light on details. 😉 We found out a lot more during a short visit over dinner, including more about all the dating he has been doing. No girlfriend yet, but I think that is just a matter of time. 😊
After spending the night in Rexburg, we left a little after 7 a.m. to come home. We had a nice drive and saw more lovely fall colors on the way home, although the leaves are starting to fall. Soon there will just be a lot of bare trees. We had a good drive and arrived home in Utah shortly after noon on Sunday.
We listened to this audiobook, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, in the car on the way home. What an interesting book! I am learning a lot listening to it. The drive wasn't long enough to finish the book, so we will probably finish listening to it when we walk this week.
I am also listening to this audiobook, Unglued by Lysa TerKeurst. I am listening to this one on my own, while I fold laundry and do other chores. I'm not finished with it yet, but so far, it is excellent!
I'm also reading these books in traditional paper and ink format - Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and The Bodies in the Library by Marty Wingate.
Sunday dinner at our house was easy and delicious Beef Stroganoff with Thai salad.
After dinner, Charly and I took a walk around our neighborhood. These trees we passed are stunning in their fall colors, but temperatures are cooling around here and I know it is just a matter of time before we have a hard freeze and these lovely golden leaves will be a memory until next year.
Weekend Gratitude:
- Having a four day fall break weekend.
- Getting to see Josh.
- Traveling to and from Idaho safely.
- Making some good memories with Charly.
- Receiving a nice phone call from our daughter Tiffany while we were on our way up to see Josh.
That's all for this weekend. Have a wonderful week.
Until Next Time,
😊Deb💖
It is so nice that you can drive up to your son's school. Not a lot of natural fall trees here. We have to drive around to find them. We may take a trip to Julian in November. Enjoy your week! Hugs
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a nice 4-day weekend. Great to hear that Josh is doing well. I would love to see the Pioneer bookstore.
ReplyDeleteHurray for long weekends. You certainly packed a lot into it. What fun to travel to Idaho and see your son. It's always good to see someone in person although texts are good if you can't. I have been finding sales in stores too and keeping close to my food budget. It's not that easy though. Hope you have a great week.
ReplyDeleteI love that you went to see Josh, that's something I would do on impulse. I bet you were happy to be with him!! We have a used book store that I love to stroll around, you never know what you will find.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh! I am so excited to read about Josh and his date!! ALso how much he is enjoying college life. And I always love your food pictures. I want to fly out just to eat at the Asian place with you! Glad you had such a productive, fun long weekend, Deb. Have a good week at school!
ReplyDeleteNice wide aisles in the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteNoticed you're reading an Anne Perry book. Hope you like it. She is one of my favorite authors. Acceptable Loss is one I haven't read yet. It is #17 in the Monk series. I just started the fifth book in the series, The Sins of the Wolf.
You made good use of your time off. A drive to deliver things to Josh was perfect on this break. You had a pretty drive, time with Charley, and audiobook and Josh! Win, win, win!
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous of your Asian restaurant. The one we liked here closed and I miss it.
How smart to drive up to visit Josh! Then you got to spend some time with him and have a little road trip, too. Beautiful foliage! Foods look so good. Books look interesting. Life is good. :)
ReplyDeleteyou certainly fit a lot in on your days off.

sounds like a wonderful long weekend! Love the goldens and oranges of Autumn....and here in the eastern USA we've had some wonderful shades of red this year!! It's been a marvelously warm fall!!
ReplyDeleteYAY for new Asian restaurants....we particularly love Thai food but every so often we crave Japanese or Chinese food. Our Chinese places tend to be VERY americanized though so we stick to our fave Thai place that is actually owned and operated by a Thai family. the food is awesome.
YAY for Josh got getting out and dating. Now we need to get Courtney to do that!! :)
When I was teaching there was no Fall break. There were two days set aside for teacher work days/teacher convention gatherings. I never went to the convention but did have to show up at school for the Thursday work day. Students got the fall break!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great weekend! All the food looks absolutely scrumptious and you know you had me at the book store and the thrift store. You have to promise me if I ever get out there we can visit that bookstore and some of the thrift stores you all visit. We don't have many good ones around here.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a fantastic long weekend. So happy you got to spend some time with your son. I loved your photos are so enjoyed touring your week with you.
ReplyDeleteDon't look back, you're not going that way made me smile. You packed a lot into your 4 day wkend. Well done. We always enjoyed our visits with our daughter when she was in college too. Seems so long ago though now. Little road trips are fun and you picked a good time to go to see fall color to make the drive more interesting. Unplugged looks interesting, will have to check it out. I really enjoy audio books and find I'm reading so much more than I would have without them. Always when walking like you and your hubby and here at the house while doing household stuff, including dinner prep. I have a headband and hat that are bluetooth. Broke out the headband the other day now that the weather is getting cold needed something on my ears and still wanted to hear my book. Trouble is, the band got stretched out from last year I guess, so may need a new one. Plus I have a very small head, and many hats etc are too big.

I am way behind in my reading and keeping up with friends here in blogland. Trying to play catch up! I enjoyed this post and also reading a couple of the previous ones to try and get the context of everything. I'm a little confused about where you are living...are you in the process of building a house? Anyway, you live in a gorgeous part of the country! I've never been in that area, and it certainly looks beautiful. Glad you had a long weekend and time to visit your son and do some relaxing projects and take walks! That's always a refresher for me. I guess the cold weather is settling in upon all of us. Even here in Florida it has been downright chilly this week. It is 41 this morning, which is chilly for us this time of year, but I love it. We have one of those electric "wood stoves" too, and we enjoy it for the coziness it creates when it is turned on, even without the heat part of it. I just love to watch it and am thankful I don't have to chop wood! LOL. I hope you are having a good week. May God bless you and keep you always.
