Here's a little about what was going on in our world during the first weekend of October.
Late Friday afternoon, Charly and I had an appointment to get our annual flu shots at our local CVS. We were both glad to get that done because now we have received both our fall Covid booster and our flu shots. Josh texted me Friday telling me that he also got a fall Covid booster, and I am glad of that. Friday afternoon, I also went through the rather tedious process of updating all of my insurance selections with my employer. This is something the school district where I teach requires all employees do every October. If the update isn't completed within a ten day window, there is a fine, so I am glad I got it finished!
I finished another batch of cards for Letters Against Isolation and mailed them to a care center in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Friday night dinner was BLT sandwiches for the second time in the week. We had some more large beefsteak tomatoes from our garden that have were a delicious addition.
After dinner, Charly and I went for a walk. It was a beautiful fall evening. I liked how the flag looked blowing in the slight breeze.
Saturday morning after breakfast and a walk, Charly and I went over to our income property home and did some yard work. Some of the garden areas are overgrown with weeds, so we worked get the weeds out. We are planning to move back into this home next summer, and I am looking forward to getting the yard and garden areas back into shape.
Our church denomination had our semiannual General Conference this weekend, with messages from our church leaders being broadcast both Saturday and Sunday. While we worked in the yard, we listened to the uplifting and faith-filled messages using an app on my phone.
Sunday morning, Charly and I went for a walk as soon as we were up and dressed. It was a lovely, cool morning. The temperature was only 61 degrees!
When we got back from our walk, we watched and listened to the Sunday sessions of General Conference. The messages were so inspirational and they were all focused on Jesus Christ, our Savior. Anyone can watch and listen to the messages here. Because of General Conference, we did not have regular church services, so we were home all day on Sunday.
While I watched General Conference, I worked on drawing some Halloween pictures which I will be sending (along with another little surprise) to each of my grandchildren. It was fun and relaxing to draw and color these pictures. (I was asked if I traced the pictures and the answer is no, I did not. Same for the Letters Against Isolation cards I make - all my own work. I looked at pictures online and made the drawings freehand and colored them myself. I have loved drawing since I was a child, but I just forgot how much I enjoy it).
Here is this weekend's harvest from my little patio container garden - a large Beefsteak tomato and several strawberries. I had more strawberries this year than last. When I picked the tomato, I noticed several other smaller tomatoes that are still green. I hope that they ripen before we get our first frost - at least enough for me to bring them in the house. Everything home grown and garden fresh just seems to taste better than store bought produce. I am looking forward to having more garden space, hopefully next year.
Sunday dinner was French Oven Stew, a recipe I got over at Mari's blog, My Little Corner of the World. Mari posts delicious recipes every Thursday, and we have tried and loved many of them. This stew was excellent. Charly said it was "the best stew we have ever had." Thanks, Mari for another winning recipe!
Here is the recipe, which I printed off and will add to the Jones Family Cookbook.
Sunday night was a time for a little indexing and getting ready for work on Monday. Charly watched a little TV. I am sure that we will read before bed as usual.

Another great weekend! I have got to go check out the organization that does the cards. That is something I could do and would enjoy. Do you do the drawings on those, too. All the little fall and Halloween drawings are so cute! I need to get my flu and shingles shots. I've never gotten the shingles shot because to my knowledge I've never had chicken pox, but my doctor said he would bet I had. He said it's virtually unheard of for someone to get to my age without having them. He said it was probably just a mild case that went unnoticed.
ReplyDeleteThen my birth father told me about his adopted son and how a recent shingles infection left him paralyzed on one side of his face and unable to speak...and he may never fully recover. Yikes! Shingles shot here I come. Happy birthday to all the birthday boys in your family this week! Today is our son's birthday, but, well....you know. Have a great week, Deb!
It sounds like a nice weekend, Deb. The picture from your walk is really pretty. The tomato and those strawberries look delicious!
ReplyDeleteHi Deb~ You and Charly always have such productive week-ends! Yes, General Conference was really good. As always, I learned so much and have so much, and have challenged myself to work on a few things as well. Your BLT looks delish! I will miss all the fresh tomatoes when they are gone, store bought can't hold a candle to fresh tomatoes. The letters you write are so inspiring, I think I will check out the website, thank you for posting it. The stew looks delish! I have a recipe similar to that one and it's so good. I haven't made it for a while, so I think I'll try this one! Have a great week, see you soon! Hugs, Barb
ReplyDeletesounds like a full week nice to get the gardens in shape before the winter settles in.

Wasn't Conference good! It always is but sometimes there are talks that really hit home. You were busy, busy! Our tomatoes are just a fine memory and many have been canned or turned into spaghetti sauce. You are very talented and love your drawings and I'm sure that your Grandkiddos will love them! Have a good week Deb!
ReplyDeleteSounds like another lovely weekend - here's to a week ahead that is just as nice!! Happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteHello! I always enjoy seeing how you spent your weekend. Your drawing is amazing! Your grandkids will love receiving those. My kids have saved cards from their grandmas and I am so glad. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to all the October people! January is the month when everyone has a birthday in my family. There is nothing as tasty as a home grown tomato!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like another full weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove the letters of isolation that you write and such cute art work. Really very good!! I can't draw a thing! :)

ReplyDeleteYou are artistic! I can barely draw stick figures. :)
ReplyDeleteYour grandkids will enjoy those.
It looks like such a nice weekend, getting things done and also relaxing.
I'm so glad you liked the stew!
Thanks for being a regular commenter on my blog. You had a very full weekend. We got flu shots on Friday and had an achy arm as a result. Dan had another Covid booster but I have to wait until November since I had Covid in August. Enjoying the leaf color here.
ReplyDeleteHi Deb, now that my Bible journaling class is over, I can blog! I love how you do those letters for the seniors and your grands! I need to get caught up on my shots. We are still having hot weather, but nights are getting a bit cooler. I always enjoy all your pictures! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a nice weekend. We got flu shots yesterday and the Covid Booster a week or so ago so we too are up to date. Getting outdoors is so nice. It's fun to read about your area of the country. And hooray for fresh tomatoes. We are still enjoying ours.
ReplyDeleteI *LOVE* your Letters Against Isolation cards! Beautiful! I just send chatty little notes but you send one-of-a-kind artwork. I hope you feel good about all the joy you're creating.
ReplyDeleteI need a flu shot, a follow up shingles shot and a covid booster. Gotta make a note to self.
