Purpose-This study aims to explore the status of collaborative research productivity, major libra... more Purpose-This study aims to explore the status of collaborative research productivity, major library and information sciences (LIS) research trends and the level of research among the LIS academicians as principal authors in Pakistan during 1975-2021 (47 years). Design/methodology/approach-A quantitative research method was adopted to collect the required data using bibliometric patterns. The data of all faculty members working in LIS schools of Pakistan was collected from the official website of their employers/institutions. Different strategies were used to acquire respondents' bibliographic/publication records such as faculty members'/employers' official websites and faculty members' Google Scholar profiles; advanced searching techniques were also used to retrieve their bibliographic records. Findings-The results revealed that a total of 74 regular faculty members comprising 78.38% males and 21.62% females are working in 12 LIS Pakistani schools. A total of 1,787 papers were produced by LIS faculty, among which 702 were written by Pakistani LIS faculty as principal authors during the selected period. The results revealed that 60.72% of the principal authors' work was produced in collaboration. The collaboration between faculty members and other faculty was 81%, while two authors' work productivity was on the top. No attention has been given to produce research in collaboration with international/foreign LIS experts, especially from developed countries. Practical implications-The findings of this study are useful for faculties to have a richer understanding of the various elements of collaboration at national as well as international levels, and then discover the ways to begin and maintain effective partnerships to research emerging trends in LIS. Originality/value-This study is a unique bibliometric study that systematically and quantitatively combined the research productivity of LIS academicians in Pakistan and provided a holistic sketch of the literature produced on various themes of LIS during 1975-2021.

Aims of Study: This study aims to analyze the search engine's behavior on a given query and results for scholarly information, followed by examining precision and recall. Design/Method: The present study was conducted in a controlled environment where three search engines were selected to examine its recall and precision against 50 queries with basic and advance searching queries. The queries were executed in all search engines. This quantitative study was used on the General, and Subject focus search engines. Finding(s): The finding of study shows that the precision and recall of FindLaw, was highly followed by Lycos with medium and Yandex the low. Further study can explore the precision and recall of other searching engines with different subject. Research Limitation(s): The study highlights the retrieval effectiveness of three search engines in a specific subject.

The main objective was to identify and discuss the various aspects of the research journals of Library & Information Sciences (LIS) published form Pakistan till date. Documentary analysis was made for acquiring the basic and desired information about these journals. The scrutiny of the available record revealed that seven LIS journals are being published in Pakistan. Out of seven, three were Higher Education Commission (HEC) recognized. Two LIS journals are charging publication fee from authors. Five journals were started publishing in last decade by LIS schools or organizations working for LIS professionals in Pakistan. Amazing is to note that none of the Journals has Impact Factor and the oldest journal Pakistan Library Information Science Journal (PLISJ) has been de recognized after journey of 52 years. The LIS community of Pakistan needs to improve the quality of research journals to meet the international standards in the field of Library & Information Studies.

Worldwide, faculty members mostly use EIS for teaching, learning, research, and professional deve... more Worldwide, faculty members mostly use EIS for teaching, learning, research, and professional development. Though, evidence is lacking to address the EIS preferences among the academicians of private sector universities in the study context. To fill this gap, using a convenient sample technique, a survey was conducted, and a structured questionnaire was used as a data collection tool from 630 permanent faculty members of private sector universities at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A total of 360 questionnaires were administrated, and 250 useable responses were received with a response rate of 69.44%. The major findings revealed that 38% of respondents were lecturers followed by 32% Assistant Professor, about half 48% of the respondents were in the age group of 46 years or above. More than 19 research articles were published by 46.04 % of faculty in national and international journals. Most (48.26%) of the lecturer used EIS, followed by Associate Professors, while most (95%) of them preferred ejournals for different academic needs. The EIS has placed itself at the top priority in academia and impacted academics in terms of keep pace with research and improvement in teaching and learning. This study recommends improving access to the internet, development of indigenous electronic resources, access to international databases, research journals to cope with the challenges of EIS requirement and uses of faculty members. This study suggested HEC, and university higher authorities to allocate sufficient funds for subscribing international electronic resources/e-database and other EIS. Further research with a broader scope would provide additional information about this significant research area.

The libraries are coping with these developments accordingly but the pace of development is not the same around the globe. The Smart library concept emerge s from the idea of smart cities, where all functions are controlled by the latest technology to minimize human involvement. This study aims to present a comprehensive mod el of smart library technolog ies and applications. The peer-reviewed literature published from 2016 to 2020 w as reviewed to model eleven smart library technologies. The feedback from the selected, senior university librarians of Pakistan on the proposed model of smart libraries was collected. The experts apprised the smart library model as a good combination of related technologies and applications. The findings reveal that each participating library is using some of the smart library technologies. The problems faced by university librarians of Pakistan while adopting smart library technologies are discussed. The study also suggests a way forward to overcome barriers to adopting the proposed model.

Majority of medical schools in Pakistan have started problem based learning, undergrads medical research program and Postgraduate programs. This quantitative study aims to investigate the user education program in medical libraries situated in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province of Pakistan. The questionnaire administered with in 19 medical colleges libraries using Google Forms as an instrument for data collection and distributed the link among all medical college librarians of the province. Findings of the study revealed majority medical libraries providing informal User Education using the orientation, bibliographic instructions and occasional lectures as method. The target audience of the User Education was New Students. The effectiveness and importance of user education program for medical students considered by (86.67%) librarians. This study will contribute to modify the current practices of user education by the medical libraries.

Purpose: This article is an attempt to examine the current situation of book losses/theft, their ... more Purpose: This article is an attempt to examine the current situation of book losses/theft, their causes, and remedies that have been taken by academic libraries in Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative approach was adopted for this study for which questionnaire as an instrument was carried out. It comprised of identifying the reasons, measures, and frequency of book theft was responded by 136 university librarians. The questionnaire was designed and administered via Google forms that took about two months for collection of the desired data. The data collected was tabulated and analysed using the Microsoft Excel. Research limitation(s): The scope of the study area is limited to the central libraries of universities of Pakistan. The investigation was confined to library physical learning resources i.e. book, journal, magazine, theses, flash cards, CDs and DVDs. Departmental, seminars, sub-campus and approved centre libraries were not the part of this research study. Key finding(s): The findings revealed that absence of national/local level policy, unawareness of users' education, high prices of the study materials, untrained supporting staff and lack of proper ownership marks are the causes of theft in the academic libraries in Pakistan. A few libraries have taken measures so as to control the theft of valuable library materials which include use of CCTV Cameras for monitoring and recording and the use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). However, due to high cost, useful precautionary measures have not been adopted by the libraries especially in universities. Practical implication(s): The findings of the study would highlight the importance of policy making regarding the library security measurement in the higher educational institutions of the country. It will alert the management of universities and higher education commission for provision of ample funds and applying the latest technology to resolve the issue. Contribution to knowledge: The study would prove fruitful and help aware the professionals of the library field about different aspects of library theft, allied reasons and their control.

This paper attempts to present the bibliometric attributes of the doctoral /postgraduate disserta... more This paper attempts to present the bibliometric attributes of the doctoral /postgraduate dissertations/theses submitted to Area Study Center for Russia, China and Central Asia University of Peshawar, Pakistan. Study covers thirty eight Years of productivity ranges from 1981 to the end of the 2019. The objective of the study was to examine the research productively of the Doctoral and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) Theses of the Center. The primary investigation explored that a total of Eighty Two PhD and Thirty Three MPhil Theses were submitted by the scholars. The gender of the scholars was male dominate; over female. Only 1.74% PhD dissertations were written in and English & Pashto Language. Majority of the theses that is 34 percent has covered Pakistan, followed by Afghanistan that comes to 19 %. About one fourth (25%) of the research was done on the subject of “Political Science” and most productive year was 1995-1996. The minimum duration of completion of MPhil & PhD theses was one and two years respectively while the length of postgraduate dissertation / Thesis reports of the Area Study Centre was ranging from 90 to 700 pages. It was suggested that area covered in the research reports needs to extend to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kagazistan.

The analysis of data revealed that Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JAIST) is the top cited journal followed by Scientometrics and Journal of Informetric during the mentioned period. The year 2015 was reported as the most productive year with 45% citations from the top twenty LIS journals. The average citation rate of Scholar Google is at the top followed by Scopus. “The sharing economy” was declared as the most cited research paper with 2391 citations followed by “The journal coverage of Web of Science and Scopus” with 688 citations.

Library services, resources, status of automation and application of emerging technologies were the parameters used for the assessment of ranking of the nineteen Public Sector Universities and Degree Awarding Institutes of North-West province of Pakistan. Survey based approach was adopted to collect the required information. It was reported that majority of university libraries under study are partially automated. Based on the above-mentioned parameters, the central library of The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University, Peshawar was ranked top followed by central/main library of University of Malakand, Chakdara, Dir, Malakand and central/main library of University of Peshawar, Peshawar. Provision of appropriate budget for the implementation of smart technologies, induction of technological adept human ware and awareness of higher-ups of the universities about the benefits of modern library technologies is recommended for the effective and smart library culture in the territory. The manifestation of these steps will help in the enhancement of quality education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Pakistan.

Interfaith dialogue has become one of the most significant and interesting activities in contempo... more Interfaith dialogue has become one of the most significant and interesting activities in contemporary socio-political and socio-religious global scenario due to its crucial role in the peace process and peaceful interfaith relations. Many groups of scholars, institutes, organizations, and even governments are promoting the activities regarding interfaith relations. Meanwhile, it is also assumed that Pakistan is one of the countries where interfaith dialogue activities are arranged officially on the state level. In this study, efforts are made to review statistically and to index the literature produced by Pakistani scholars and universities. A mixed-method research methodology is adopted for this study with a bibliometric approach to find out results. Almost 136 theses & dissertations have been produced by scholars in a wide range of Pakistani Universities on interfaith Dialogue, religious debates, harmony, and relations. The research produced by male scholars was 71 (52.21 %) and most 49 (36%) productive era was from 2011 to 2015. The majority of the research was for Master (38%) and MS/M.Phil (34%) level degrees and about one-fifth of the theses were on the theme of “Interfaith Dialogue in Pakistani context”. Therefore, it is suggested that the course on interfaith dialogue, harmony, and relations should be taught at M. Phil and Ph.D. Level in the discipline of Islamic studies and social sciences.

... more Anxiety plays a very dynamic role in the academic performance of the students. A normal level of
anxiety is beneficial for students. It motivates students for study and hard work that results into a
prosperous future, but high level of anxiety badly affects the students learning process. This study
explains the students’ anxiety and academic achievements of the MS-Library and Information Science
students of Sarhad University of Science and IT, Pakistan. Survey based quantitative approach was
applied for data acquisition. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. Lack of motivation
from teachers, class tests, and assignments were regarded as the most vibrant factors that enhance
students’ anxiety about the subject of statistics. It was recommended that encouragement and
motivation to students from teachers and enhancement of pedagogical skills of teachers are the sources
that can be used to minimize the anxiety of students and will improve the academic performance of the
students.

The authors attempted to find the numbers of articles per year, authorship pattern, length of articles, form of cited documents, the ranking of contributors and country-wise contribution of first authors. The printed version of Shield issues along with web-based issues was consulted for the analysis. The data were entered into Excel sheets for refinement and interpretation. Journal papers are the more cited documents as per the analysis of the research articles. The contribution of Pakistani scholars is vigilant followed by Indians.

The major areas covered are: total collection of the college libraries with percentage of collection used per annum, the annual budget allocated to libraries, visits of the library users’ per day, number of colleges in which library science is being taught as an optional subject and attitude of the librarians towards library automation. The paper also highlights the views of librarians about various limitations in government college libraries of the province. Provision of sufficient funds, periodic trainings, introduction of Library Science education, and application of emerging technologies in college libraries are the tools with help of which college library system should be improved. Pakistan Library Association, Higher ups of Higher Education Department- Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, eminent library experts and policy makers have to play their timely role in this connection.

This quantitative study presents the bio bibliometrics analysis of Prof. Hamid Rahman, and the li... more This quantitative study presents the bio bibliometrics analysis of Prof. Hamid Rahman, and the literature produced by him from 1983 till the end of 2020. The basic aim of the study was to investigate the life and contribution to the field of the Library and Information Science in Urdu, English and Hindko, language, professor devoted in his professional career. Prof. Hamid Rahman wrote award winging papers, and won IVP (International Visitor Program) scholarship. He was remained an external/internal supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate Library Science programs in many leading Universities of the country. He organized six library science conferences at Bara Gali Sub-Campus of University of Peshawar. He is the author two books namely; “An Anthology of Library Science”, and “Muqalat e Kutubkhana.” The results show that good number of literature has been produced in 1990 and major area targeted includes Academic Libraries, Library Science Education and LIS Research in Pakistan. Prof. Hamid Rahman significantly contributed to the Library and Information Science literature in Pakistan.

The research theses from 2014 to 2017 produced by undergraduate, graduates and postgraduates of this school of LIS were scrutinized. Bibliometric approach was adopted here. The findings shows that more than half of the theses are produced by graduate students followed by postgraduate. The contribution of male researchers are dominant as compared to female. Total 29 areas were addressed; however, the prominent topic was Library Resources and Services followed by Emerging Trends in Libraries. The most cited source was the Journal in these theses.
