Dr. Teresa S . Welsh
Professor Dr. Teresa Welsh earned an M.L.I.S. and a Ph.D. in information sciences from the University of Tennessee. At UTK, she was a member of the Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society and was awarded the Hilton A. Smith Graduate Fellowship as well as the Best Technical Project Award and Best Doctoral Paper Award from the School of Information Sciences. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.A. degree in anthropology, a Certificate in Humanities, and minors in social studies and classical studies. While at Southern Miss, she participated in British Studies for study-abroad credit, and was a member of the Honors College as well as Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Theta Kappa, Lambda Alpha, Gamma Beta Phi, and Golden Key Honor Societies.
She joined the faculty at Southern Miss in summer 2003 and was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Education and Psychology and a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Fellow. She served as President of the Friends of Cook Library Board and as co-managing editor of SLIS Connecting e-journal. She served on the UTK School of Information Sciences Advisory Board, the International Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries (QQML) Advisory Committee, and International Scientific Committee. In addition to being published in scholarly journals and conference proceedings, she has authored several book chapters, co-authored a book on information literacy, and another book on the research process. Teaching and research interests include information literacy, historical research, bibliometric research, spatial analysis, information retrieval, museum studies, and archival studies. From July 2015 to August 2021, she served as Director of the School of Library and Information Science, and from 2007 to 2019, taught a British Studies LIS summer study-abroad course in London, Oxford, and Edinburgh. In 2021, she was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus of Library and Information Science.

According to the American Library Association (www.ala.org), “information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning and is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education.
Information literacy is an umbrella term that includes a variety of important, specific competencies addressed by chapter topics such as: definitions of and research related to information literacy, cultural literacy, library literacy, ethical literacy (copyright, plagiarism), computer/Internet/Web literacy, network/database literacy, media literacy, government literacy, financial literacy, and a chapter on the basic types of research papers and how to structure and write an objective research paper. Appendices in the book include an instrument for measuring information competency and three research papers related to the topic of information literacy.
