Hey girls, what would the reaction be if I created a ladies-only discord? Not because I want to leave the men out or anything, but there's some stuff, specifically health related stuff, that can be uncomfortable to talk about in the open, even if it's just a "should my body part be doing that" question. It would be a Catholic group, although certainly our non-Catholic friends would be welcome to join so long as they're fine with the group following the teachings of the Church (because there really are enough non-Catholic women's groups, health or otherwise). Would anyone be interested? Let me know in the replies and if enough of us are interested I'll set it up!

I’m going to reblog this to give those of y’all who didn’t see this a chance to respond! Girls, feel free to reblog to give your female followers the opportunity!

The server is set up! I'll be sending invites to the women who have replied to the post by now, anyone else can message me for the invite. I'm so excited!!!

Update 9/17: I'm closing invites for the time being after having quite a few people message me and ask to join lately so I can get the new people acclimated. If you've messaged me I've sent you an invite (so long as you aren't a bot lol) but let me know if that doesn't work!

If anyone else would like to join, I promise I'll open invites again someday!

me: I'm exhausted, but I need to push through anyway

my brain: get some rest, if you don't have your health you don't have anything

me: ... you do realize that quote is from THE VILLIAN in the princess bride, right? Why should I take health advice from a man who tortures people as a hobby?

I know this seems very obvious but I am just going to subtweet a genre of Tumblr posts by saying that understanding how a system works even if you are opposed to it is a good thing, and in fact, definitely helps you be more effective in opposing it! This often includes understanding the thought process and goals of people who are participating in it even if you disagree with them. This is especially true when even if a system is bad it is serving some necessary load-bearing purposes in people's daily lives which you will have to deal with.

This post is about many things but it is especially about everyone who proudly says they have no understanding of economics.

If you're smug about your ignorance as though it is a badge of honor, you are far more a part of the problem than you will ever be a part of the solution. Structures of power WANT you to be ignorant to how they work, ignorance is exploitable. This isn't about your image, it's about what's effective and what's not.

was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out

the comments have me in tears

It DOES have a sign. It turns on when it detects something too tall for the bridge. It even flashes. And the traffic lights will go red to get people to stop when it detects an over height vehicle so they read the signs. (note this lovely example where the lights are red, because the truck thought it was better than the lights)

every time I see this post I've forgotten how clearly signposted the canopener bridge is, and every time it hits me like a truck (hitting the canopener bridge and getting the top of its trailer ripped asunder)

I drove under this bridge when I was on a road trip one time. I didn't realize it was the bridge until I was a few minutes past it.

when i was a teenager i babysat a lot and i once babysat kids in an extremely strange new-build McMansion that had tunnels throughout connecting the children’s bedrooms and leading to secret, windowless playrooms. you had to crawl on your hands and kneed through the tunnels, which were more like tiny hallways in that they were carpeted and painted white, and the two playrooms in the middle of the tunnel systems had really low ceiling so you couldn’t stand up.

honestly the main concern is what an absolute fire-trap the whole thing was, especially because the kids’ dad said his shoulders were too broad to fit so if the kids had some sort of emergency in the playrooms (choking, seizure, the list goes on), it would be nigh impossible for an adult to respond quickly which is crazy.

the house itself was enormous too, like 8,000 sq. feet

and clearly this stressed me out because the first night i babysat there i had a nightmare that i was playing hide-and-seek with the kids (three of them) with flashlights and all the lights off,

and after they all hid and i began seeking them, a polar bear broke into the house and it was emaciated and starving and hunting,

and the entire nightmare was me staying as silent as possible sneaking through the house and avoiding the polar bear, knowing i had to also find the kids before the polar bear did AND before they got bored and came out of hiding or else the polar bear would get them.

the tunnels were the only safe place because the polar bear couldn’t fit so i spent a lot of the nightmare using them to navigate the house, and they were a lot more expansive & confusing than they were irl.

anyway not a fan of my brain inserting me into an indie horror game

thinkin about a baby of my acquaintance & how when her parents are hanging out & chatting, she’ll almost fully participate in the conversation–politely watching who’s talking, saying something approx the same length & tone of what her parents are saying, occasionally using a questioning cadence & looking at someone specific for an answer, laughing when they laugh–doing everything except actually using any recognizable language

this baby also once tipped me a granola bar at work. she’d been watching everyone in line very closely & when it was her parent’s turn, at exactly the right point in the transaction for a tip, she pickpocketed her mom’s granola bar & shoved it in the tip har

This baby has better social skills than me

i once took an uber driven by an eccentric older gentleman who told me about his young man’s travels in nepal. he said that in a town too small for any formal hospitality, he had been hosted overnight by a nepali family who spoke no english. he spoke no nepali. i asked what they did all night. with an air of matter of factness, he said they shared drinks and talked. “there we sat,” he said, “sipping i’m not sure what. it was white, and strong. and they’d tell me a story in nepali. didn’t get a word. but i could tell when they’d finished and we’d all laugh together. then i’d tell a story in english. they didn’t get a word. but when i finished, we all laughed together. lovely night. lovely, lovely people.” i think this baby gets it
