Solutions Enabler or SMC on the Service Processor is not at the latest version.
All functionality and applications on the Service Processor are installed and/or upgraded with Enginuity. It
is not supported to change any software component that comes with the Enginuity Installer unless
specifically instructed.
The relationship of software versions to Enginuity bundle is shown in the Enginuity Matrix on the SR web
site.
With the introduction of the Symmetrix VMAX and Enginuity 5875, EMC offers three new storage
integration's with VMware vSphere 4.1, enabling customers to dramatically improve the efficiency of their
VMware environments. VMware vSphere 4.1 includes three new VMware vStorage APIs for Array
Integration (VAAI) that allow the ability to offload specific storage operations to the Symmetrix VMAX
system to increase both overall system performance and efficiency. Symmetrix VMAX with Enginuity
5875 supports all three of VMware's new vStorage APIs. These are:
Full Copy. This feature delivers hardware-accelerated copying of data by performing all duplication and
migration operations on the array.
Block Zero. This feature delivers hardware-accelerated zero initialization, greatly reducing common
input/output tasks, such as creating new virtual machines.
Hardware-assisted Locking. This feature delivers improved locking controls on Virtual Machine File
System (VMFS), subsequently allowing far more virtual machines per datastore and shortened
simultaneous block virtual machine boot times. Refer to the Symmetrix Configuration (SSR Wiki page) for
additional information.
SymmWin does not place spares in the optimal locations in the Disk Map. All spares are in row E on the
SymmWin Disk Map by default. Displaying Spare Coverage may show that not all data drives have spare
coverage.
Field Service: In the SymmWin Disk Map, manually moving the spares from row E to row D will
improve the spare coverage for the drives that have vault volumes allocated on them. SymmWin Fix
20011283 has been written for this issue and if required can be requested as an Enginuity Pack using
the Enginuity Pack Request Process at 5875.231.172.
Update: October 11th, 2011: The E-Pack will not be shipped with the arrays. Manufacturing will be creating
bin files with the fix. Once the bin file is created with the fix there is no need for this fix on the Service
Processor.
Unexpected script step "Remove_Spindles" at Enginuity 5875 when adding disk drives.
Enginuity 5875 has changed the way disk groups work. This was done for future functionality that has not
been released yet. What is new is that when a disk group is emptied, the disk group does not get
destroyed. Instead, it becomes an Empty Disk Group that can be used again. These empty disk groups
can be seen in the SymmWin Disk Map. Every time a disk group moves from empty status to used or
from used to empty status you will see the "remove_ spindles" step in the script.
This is not an issue. It is the way Enginuity is designed to handle Empty Disk Groups. See example.
