Primus solution
emc249135- Symmetrix DMX-3, DMX-4, and VMAX: How do I determine the previous
Enginuity level (after a successful code upgrade)?

In many cases, where we encounter issues during a code upgrade (In-Family, NDU or E-Pack), it is often
beneficial to know the original code level we were starting from.

To determine the original Enginuity level:

From a DA director, issue the command: 8D,<address>,8,FEE
First 4 bytes = old code
Second 4 bytes = new code

The addresses are:

203D01A5 for 5772
203D01A4 for 5773
5914308 for 5874

The example below shows the offset after a NDU upgrade from Enginuity 5772.103.93 to 5773.155.107:

D- 1a @[2705C2E0,0] 8000;02;ff;0803;00000000 00000001; 0 ; 8D,203d01a4,8,fee bcm=6

Primus solution
emc276502- Vaulting in Symmetrix considerations and basic checks to be performed

• What is Vaulting ?
Vaulting is designed to limit the time needed to power off the system if it needs to switch to a battery
supply. The vault image is fully redundant, with the specified contents of global memory being saved
twice to independent disks.

• Explain Vaulting Operation and when is it triggered ?

A vault operation is triggered when the Symmetrix system is powered down, transitioned offline, or when
environmental conditions initiate a vault situation:
1. During the first part (Vault Save), the Symmetrix system stops all I/O. When physical memory
reaches a consistent state, directors write the contents to the vault devices, saving two copies of the
data. The Symmetrix system then completes the power down, or, if a power down is not required, it
remains in an offline state.
2. During the second part (Vaultrestore), the Symmetrix system startup program initializes the hardware
and the environmental system, restores physical memory contents from the saved data (while
checking data integrity), and re-initializes the physical memory.
3. The Symmetrix resumes the normal operation when SPS's are sufficiently charged to support
another Vault.

Primus solution
emc276502- Vaulting in Symmetrix considerations and basic checks to be
performed… Continued

• What are the rules for Vaulting configuration ?

• Vault devices are designated disk drives that reserve a dedicated 5 GB space for vault data, including
metadata.
• For DMX: Each disk director pair requires 32 such dedicated devices for a total of 160 GB of vault
space per disk director pair.
• For VMAX: Each director pair requires 40 such dedicated devices for a total of 200 GB of vault space
per director pair.
• The vault devices can only use single-mirror data protection and cannot be configured with
TimeFinder/Snap, virtual, or dynamic spare devices.
• The 5 GB vault space is for internal use only. No other device can reside in this space.
• Flash drives cannot be used as vault devices. Update January 2011: In Enginuity 5875 with
SymmWin fix 20010640 it will allow you to configure Power Vault volumes on Flash Drives. This fix is
only available via an Epack request. A RPQ is also required to allow this. Refer to emc191682.
• Five vault drives per loop are required to enable permanent sparing. Vault drives are eligible for
permanent sparing.
• The total capacity of all vault volumes in the system will be at least sufficient to keep two logical copies
of the persistent portion of physical memory.

Primus solution
emc266669- TSA emc266669: Symmetrix VMAX: Mainframe SSID changes can make
the system unavailable

Changing the SSID of the last device of the Symmetrix from SID1 to SID2 generates an invalid device
count on SID2. The next configuration change after this will drop all directors DD. In theory, this issue also
will also affect FBA devices, since they also have a SSID. The SSID is used internally in the code for
certain features. However, this is unlikely since there really is no reason to change an SSID on FBA
devices.

Field Service: Contact the Support Center if you have encountered this issue. Fix 57481 is required for
any Symmetrix VMAX performing configuration changes affecting SSID. This fix (OPT 365111) detects if a
Symmetrix is affected. During a fast IML, it checks for SSID corruption and logs a F4EE error. Contact
the EMC Support Center and quote this solution ID.

Fix 57481 is released in 5875.198.148. Fix 57481 prevents the problem but it doesn’t fix already
corrupted SSID tables. Contact the EMC Support Center and quote this solution ID.

Per engineering, we need 3 fixes 57481, 57985, 59231 at 5875.135 and 5875.139, and need one fix
59231 at 5875.198.148. fix 57481 and 57985 are released at 5875.198.148. To submit Epack request for
fix 59231, go to the following link - http://iresqlc42.corp.emc.com/epack/Corporate/Default1.asp

Primus solution
emc141270 - Symmetrix DMX, DMX-3, DMX-4, and VMAX: Warning: Message
0x0000076B.0x076B : The Upgrade Counter is Changing. The new configuration file
is probably overwriting customer, Optimizer or global sparing changes!

Update: September 6th, 2011: Since the introduction of Enginuity 5874 more and more changes are
becoming Dynamic. Dynamic changes do not change the upgrade counter and the checking for these
changes is somewhat more complicated, it also can't be simulated on your laptop. So the strategy for
VMAX is to avoid multiple bin upgrades and do all changes in one bin file. If this doesn't work please
escalate to the configuration group and if needed it will be escalated to engineering.
