In many cases, where we encounter issues during a code upgrade (In-Family, NDU or E-Pack), it is often
beneficial to know the original code level we were starting from.
The example below shows the offset after a NDU upgrade from Enginuity 5772.103.93 to 5773.155.107:
• What is Vaulting ?
Vaulting is designed to limit the time needed to power off the system if it needs to switch to a battery
supply. The vault image is fully redundant, with the specified contents of global memory being saved
twice to independent disks.
Changing the SSID of the last device of the Symmetrix from SID1 to SID2 generates an invalid device
count on SID2. The next configuration change after this will drop all directors DD. In theory, this issue also
will also affect FBA devices, since they also have a SSID. The SSID is used internally in the code for
certain features. However, this is unlikely since there really is no reason to change an SSID on FBA
devices.
Field Service: Contact the Support Center if you have encountered this issue. Fix 57481 is required for
any Symmetrix VMAX performing configuration changes affecting SSID. This fix (OPT 365111) detects if a
Symmetrix is affected. During a fast IML, it checks for SSID corruption and logs a F4EE error. Contact
the EMC Support Center and quote this solution ID.
Fix 57481 is released in 5875.198.148. Fix 57481 prevents the problem but it doesn’t fix already
corrupted SSID tables. Contact the EMC Support Center and quote this solution ID.
Per engineering, we need 3 fixes 57481, 57985, 59231 at 5875.135 and 5875.139, and need one fix
59231 at 5875.198.148. fix 57481 and 57985 are released at 5875.198.148. To submit Epack request for
fix 59231, go to the following link - http://iresqlc42.corp.emc.com/epack/Corporate/Default1.asp
Update: September 6th, 2011: Since the introduction of Enginuity 5874 more and more changes are
becoming Dynamic. Dynamic changes do not change the upgrade counter and the checking for these
changes is somewhat more complicated, it also can't be simulated on your laptop. So the strategy for
VMAX is to avoid multiple bin upgrades and do all changes in one bin file. If this doesn't work please
escalate to the configuration group and if needed it will be escalated to engineering.
