    WHAT IS A LETTER TO THE EDITOR?
    LETTER TO THE EDITOR

    • A letter to the editor is a letter sent to a publication about issues of concern from
    its readers. In many publications, letters to the editor may be sent either through
    conventional mail or electronic mail.
    • Letters to the editor are most frequently associated with newspapers and news
    magazines.
    • They are sometimes published in other periodicals (such as entertainment and
    technical magazines and academic journals).
    Address of the Sender: This segment includes the address
    of the person sending the letter addressed to the Editor.

    If you’re responding to a published piece in the newspaper,


    make that clear. Your first sentence should directly refer to the
    other article.
    Letter to the Editor
    Introduction- Gives a brief abstract of the content to follow.

    Paragraph 2: Content- Includes the main details and subject matter of the letter.

    Paragraph 3: Give suitable suggestions

    Paragraph 4: Make an appeal to the authorities/public and


    mention your expectations.
    FORMAT
    1. Sender’s address: The address and contact details of the sender are written here. Include email and phone number, if required
    or if mentioned in the question.
    2. Date: The date is written below the sender’s address after Leaving one space or line.
    3. Receiving Editor’s address: The address of the recipient of the mail i.e. the editor is written here.
    4. Subject of the letter: The main purpose of the letter forms the subject. It must be written in one line. It must convey the matter
    for which the letter is written.
    5. Salutation (Sir / Ma’am)
    6. Body: The matter of the letter is written here. It is divided into 3 paragraphs as follows:
    • Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself and the purpose of writing the letter in brief.
    • Paragraph 2: Give details about the issue/problem raised.
    • Paragraph 3: Give suitable suggestions
    • Paragraph 4: Make an appeal to the authorities/public and mention your expectations.

    • You happened to come across a group of children in tattered clothes begging on the road side.
    Their bones were peeping out of their skin-a pathetic picture of malnutrition. You felt upset and
    decided to write a letter to the editor of ‘The Tribune’, Chandigarh regarding how this affects us
    as a society/country at large and what needs to be done. Write the letter in about 100-120 words.
