TUTORIAL 9 – SPECIES

EVOLUTION
Done by:
Tanika Edwards
Otavia Chapman
Outline the four forms of speciation
recognized by science
• Allopatric Speciation: Geographic isolation leads to reproductive isolation
and the formation of distinct species due to separate evolutionary
pressures.
Continuation
• Sympatric Speciation: New species arise without geographical isolation,
with reproductive isolation occurring within the same area due to factors
like niche differentiation or disruptive selection.
Continuation
• Parapatric Speciation: Adjacent populations are separated by extreme
habitat changes within the same area, limiting gene flow and leading to
the evolution of distinct species adapted to different ecological niches.
Continuation
• Peripatric Speciation: A small group becomes isolated from a larger
population, often on the periphery of the species' range, facing different
environmental conditions and selective pressures, leading to the formation
of a new species.
