Buck Converter Basics

• Features of a buck converter

• Pulsed input current, requires input filter.
• Lower output voltage ripple is shown due to continuous output
current.
• Output voltage tends to be lesser than the input voltage

Non-Synchronous Vs Synchronous Converter

Non-Synchronous converter Synchronous converter

Differences Between Synchronous
& Nonsynchronous

Non-Synchronous Synchronous
When M is on, no current flows to D (off) When M1 is on, M2 is turned off
When M is off, a forward current flows to D (on) When M1 is off, M2 is turned on
In efficiency, the nonsynchronous converter trails the High efficiency, but it requires special provisions to
synchronous type boost its efficiency at low load
The circuit is relatively simple More complex circuitry to the nonsynchronous

Gate Driver with Bootstrap circuit

Selection of Buck Converter
Components
● Gate Driver
○ N-channel MOSFETs have a low Ron
○ If N-channel MOSFET is used as a high side switch, the VGS need to
be higher than the input VDC is needed
○ The internal power supply voltage of IC is not high enough to drive N-
channel MOSFET
○ Bootstrap circuit is used to charge pump composed from a capacitor
and a diode with a switched voltage to generate a high voltage for
driving a N-channel MOSFET
Selection of Buck Converter
Components
● Diode
○ Diodes with fast recovery characteristics is preferred.
○ Typically, Schottky diode is used.
○ For Low output voltages , High output currents & Higher Efficiency
diode will be replaced by MOSFET.
