Would you like a cup of coffee?

Yes/No questions (with Would + subject + like + to-infinitive?


Would you like…? I’d like…
following to-infinitive) E.g., Would you like to go out tonight?
The focus here is on “would like” in offers and suggestions.

Sometimes there is a different meaning:


I love coffee (uncountable = the substance in general).
Yes/No questions (with Would + subject + like + noun?
Can I have (a) coffee / three coffees? (countable = a cup / three cups of coffee). following nouns) E.g., Would you like some juice?
I like chicken (uncountable = the meat).
I saw some chickens today (countable = the animals).
“Would like” can be followed by a to-infinitive or a noun. Like other modal Question word + would + subject + like?
Information questions
E.g., What would you like to eat tonight?
verbs, “would” inverts with the subject in questions.

The meal was delicious. awful.
The food was tasty. tasteless.
The potatoes were hot. cold.
