• During the following sessions, we are going to learn how to express
the activities that we usually did in the past with the correct use of
the expression USED TO… in the negative form the expression is
DIDN´T USE TO.
• In this document you´ll find some information, examples and
exercises to practice.

ØTo talk about past habits.
ØTo contrast what you do now with your past habits.
ØThere is no present form.
ØYou can use it with verbs like: BE ,GET but the meaning would be
different. You´ll find some examples in the next lessons, but please,
do not get confussed.

What is the structure to make an AFFIRMATIVE sentence?

Affirmative: Subject + used to + verb in infinitive form +


complement
She used to drink tea.

• When we want to express that we didn´t have certain habits or


routines in the past we use DIDN’T USE TO.

• What did you notice in the structure?


• Same as using past simple, we need DIDN´T to negate and the verb in
the base form (USE).

• We keep the same rule we use it in simple past form. DID to make
questions plus SUBJECT (singular or plural is the same), plus USE TO
(base form).
• 1. Where did you use to spend your vacation ten years ago? Where do you go now?

• 2. What kind of music did you use to like then? Who were your favorite singers? What kind of music do you like now?

• Meaning:
• BE USED TO means ”to be familiar with” or “be accustomed to”.

• Examples:
Ø I´m used to this (Estoy acostumbrado a esto).
Ø He wasn't used to walking so much and his legs hurt after the hike (No estaba acostumbrado a caminar mucho y sus piernas le dolían después de
la caminata).
Ø She´s used to the city now and doesn't get lost any more (Ahora está acostumbrada a la ciudad y ya no se pierde).
Ø I'm a teacher so I'm used to speaking in public (Soy maestra, entonces estoy acostumbrada a hablar en público).

• *Be used to and get used to are followed by a noun, pronoun or the -ing form of a verb, and can be used to talk about the past, present or future.
• We use GET USED TO to talk about the process of becoming familiar with something.

Ø I'm getting used to the noise now (Ya me estoy acostumbrando al ruido).

Ø I'm finding this new job hard but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon (Encuentro este nuevo trabajo difícil pero estoy seguro que me
acostumbraré pronto).

Ø It took my mother years to get used to living in London after moving from Mexico (Le tomó años a mi madre acostumbrarse a vivir
en Londres después de mudarse de México).

• *Be used to and get used to are followed by a noun, pronoun or the -ing form of a verb, and can be used about the past, present
or future.
