Wh-words.
Definition: Wh-words are the words that we use to make questions.

Questions are a useful part of all languages.

Asking questions helps you figure out where the train station is, what you’re ordering
from a restaurant or what time you’re meeting a friend.

In English, one specific type of question is the “wh- question.”

Wh- questions help us understand the world around us.
For example:
● Why is the sky blue?
● Where do elephants live?
● What is the most popular food in China?

Best of all, wh- questions help us get to know other people.

For example:
● What is your name?
● Where are you from?
● Who is your favorite actor?

What Are Wh- Questions?

Wh- questions can help you figure out important information about places, people,
ideas and things. You can use wh- questions in conversations to find out more about
someone, and they’ll ask you wh- questions to learn more about you.

In English, there are many types of questions, but we can look at two main categories:
● Yes/no questions
● and wh- questions.

These two types of questions will give two different types of answers.

A yes/no question gives a “yes” or a “no” as an answer. Because of this, yes/no
questions are considered closed questions because there are usually only two choices
for answers.
For example:
● Do you want extra anchovies on your pizza?
No, I do not. O
 RY
 es, I do.
● Are you her brother?
Yes, I am. OR Yes, I am.

Wh- questions can’t have “yes” or “no” as an answer. Instead, these questions require
information. That information could be anything, and that’s why wh- questions are
called o
pen questions. The options for answers are limitless.

For example:
● "What do you want on your pizza?”
you need to respond with the name of a pizza topping. You might answer, “pepperoni,”
or “mushrooms” or “anchovies.” But you can’t answer “yes” to this question. It just
wouldn’t make any sense!

Forming Wh- Questions

The structure of wh- questions is similar to the structure of yes/no questions. The main
difference is that the wh- word is added to the beginning of the question.

After the wh- question word, we have two options. We can invert the subject and the
verb, or we can use “Do Support.”

● Inverting the Subject and the Verb (questions with to be)

Formula: WH word + to be + subject + complement + ?

Example:
What is you ID card number?
Who are your favorite singers?

● Using “Do/Does Support” (zero verb to be)

“Do/Does Support” means that the verb “do” is placed after the wh- word
followed by the subject. It supports the main verb in the question to make it
grammatically correct.
Formula: WH word + do/does + subject + main verb + complement + ?

IMPORTANT TIP:
We use D
O for "I, you, they, and we". And DOES for "she, he and it"

For example:
What do y
ou want to eat for dinner?
Where d
 oes he live?

You need to pay attention to your verb, if it is verb to be, you must use the first
formulation "inverting subject and verb". If your verb is a main verb, you must
use the second one, "Do/Does support".
