Water supply pipe Appurtenance

Distribution pipes are provided with some accessories so as to make the distribution of
water easy and effective and are known as pipe appurtenances. Example are Taps,
cocks, valve etc.
ELBOW: a pipe fitting installed between two lengths of
pipe or tube allowing a change of direction, usually 45, 90
or 180 degrees.

REDUCING ELBOW: an elbow used to increase water

pressure connecting two pipes of different diameter.

Tee:
A Tee is used to either combine or
split a fluid flow, connecting three
pipes at same time, most common
type are tees with the same inlet
and outlet sizes.

Cross:
A cross has one inlet and three outlets, or vice versa. It
connects four pipes at a time.

Clamp/ Lap joint:

It is used when two new pipes are connected from the ends.
Concentric reducer:
It is used to connect two pipes of different diameter
concentrically.

Eccentric reducer:
It is also used to connect two pipes of different
diameter but not concentrically.
1. Butterfly valve: Valve used in a variety of systems aboard ship

Best suited control:

linear, equal percentage

Applications:
liquids, gases, slurries, liquids with
suspended solids
Advantages:
1.  Low cost and maint.
2.  High capacity flows
3.  Good flow control
4.  Low pressure drop

Disadvantages:
1.High torque required for control
2.Prone to cavitation at lower flows
2. Gate valve: Ball valves, as the name implies, are stop
valves that use a ball to stop or start the flow
of fluid.

Best suited control:

quick opening
Applications:
oil, gas, air, slurries, heavy liquids, steam,
noncondensing gases, and corrosive
liquids

Advantages:
1. Low cost
2. High capacity
3. Tight shutoff
4. Little resistance to flow
Disadvantages:
1.Poor control
2.Cavitate at low pressure drops
3.Cannot be used for throttling
Globe valves are probably the most common
3. Globe valve: valves in existence. The globe valve derives its
name from the globular shape of the valve body.

Best suited control:  linear and equal

Types of globe valve bodies percentage

Applications:  liquids, vapours, gases,

corrosive substances, slurries

Advantages:
1. Efficient throttling
2. Accurate flow control
3. Available in multiple ports

Disadvantages:
1.High pressure drop
2.More expensive than other valves

Taps or bib cocks

Provided at the ends of the water pipe to draw-off water from

the pipe

Screw down type

Opens in the anticlockwise direction

May be push type operates automatically

Stop cocks

Used to completely shut off the flow of water to a fixture.

Screw down type and opens in anticlockwise direction
