Stimulus Receptor Coordinator Effector

Section 1- Structure of the Nervous System
(CNS)
Structure Function

1. Neurone Specialised cells that electrical impulses are passed through.

2. Nerve Bundles of hundreds/thousands of neurones.
Made up of your brain and spinal cord. Your brain co-ordinates all
3 Central Nervous System (CNS)
responses and sends impulses out again.
4 Sense Organs
Organs which detect changes on the outside e.g. smell (nose), touch A Synapse
(skin), sight (eye). (10)
5 Sensory Neurone Cells that carry impulses from your sense organs to your CNS.
Connect a sensory neurone to a motor neurone. They are found in
6 Relay Neurones
the CNS.
7 Motor Neurone Carry information from the CNS to parts of your body (effectors)
Muscles or glands which respond to an impulse and make a change
8 Effector
happen.
9 Receptor Found clustered in your sense organs and pick up changes (stimuli).
A physical gap or junction between neurones. Chemicals called Reflex Pathway
10 Synapse neurotransmitters diffuse across the gap as the electrical impulse
CANNOT jump. Stimulus Receptor Sensory Relay Motor Effector Response
