BODY SYSTEMS
FUNCTIONS HOMEOSTASIS
Although each of the
organ systems has a
different set of
functions, they all
work together, as a
whole, to maintain
homeostasis.

16 CONTOSO ALL-HANDS
Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the
condition wherein the REMEMBER
human body system is FROM
HOMEOSTASIS
maintained in balance
despite the changing
factors outside.
HOW DOES
MESSAGE
CARRY IN
NERVOUS
SYSTEM?
Messages carried by nervous
system are electrical signals
called impulses.
\
Cells that transmit these impulses are
called neurons
3 types of neurons
1.Sensory
2.Motor
3.Interneurons
Interneurons: connect
sensory and motor neurons and
carry impulses between them.

ENGAGEMENT
•The chemical messengers that your
body can't function without. Their
job is to carry chemical signals
(“messages”) from one neuron
(nerve cell) to the next target cell.
Neurotransmitters
•The chemical secreted into the
gap between neurons at a
synapse.
Neurotransmitters
• Acetylcholine- slows heart rate; PNS
• Glutamate- most prevalent neurotransmitter in
the brain
• Aspartate- in CNS
• Norepinephrine- awakening from deep sleep
• Epinephrine- increase heart rate
• Dopamine- movement of skeletal muscles
Neurotransmitters
• Seratonin- sensory perception, temp regulation,
mood, sleep
• Nitric oxide- may play a role in memory and
learning
• Enkephalin- inhibit pain impulses by suppressing
release of substance P
• Substance P- enhances perception of pain
