We found scores of young people who, in the middle of the week, were at home, sending out their Informal stand CVs or whiling away time on the street. We spoke to them about their hopes and dreams on Buffalo:
Vusi Salman (22) lives with his unemployed parents. He matriculated in 2007 and couldnt nish his diploma in nancial management as he didnt have the money. He has been unemployed since October last year Unemployed Rose Mosotho (26) lives with family members and is desperate for any kind of work
Makhado Close:
Amanda Simelane (22) lives with 10 adult relatives, two of whom have jobs. She recently completed a course in disc jockeying and has started her own company

Unemployed Milton Maphoto (26) failed matric in 2008 and lives with four unemployed cousins and an elderly uncle. The family relies on his pension. He would love to study boiler making at an FET college but cannot afford to Njabulo Mkhize (20) nished matric in 2010 and lives with his employed parents. He has been sending out CVs and was recently called to an interview

Bongani Nkomo (20) nished matric last year and lives with his brother, a sales consultant. He is desperate for a part-time job that will enable him to study at university

Cynthia Modise (20) nished school last year and has been applying for any kind of job she can get. She lives with her child, sister and other relatives none of whom have jobs. They survive on her grandmothers state pension
Dikgang Mokoena lives with his unemployed mother. He nished his national diploma in engineering at the University of Johannesburg in 2004 and, unable to nd a job, has been working as a warehouse labourer
Christina Mosito (22) shares a back yard room with her mother, who is a teacher, and cousin Thato Moagi (19). Mosito nished her FET training in travel and tourism last year, but hasn't qualied as she needs in-service training. Prepared to do anything, she's applied for numerous jobs
Lungisani Dlungwane (21) failed matric last year and has been unable to nd a job. His father and three siblings are employed
Unemployed Themba Mjuau (25) lives with his mother, wife and their two-year-old child. They survive on hand-outs from his two older siblings. With no matric, he last worked as a driver in March
Thabo Mokoena (22) lives with his unemployed mother and two other relatives. He left his supermarket job this year and started a welding business
