QUESTION 1.

a). Write the statement of the second law of thermodynamics as formulated

by: i). Kelvin-Planck. ii). Clausius.
b). Derive the expression for the cycle thermal efficiency ( ηth ¿of a heat
engine in terms of heat of cold reservoir (Q L) and heat of hot reservoir (Q H ).
c). The work input to a reversed heat engine is 100kJ while heat delivered
by the engine to the high temperature environment is 480kJ.Determine the
heat supplied to the engine from the low temperature environment and the
coefficient of performance as a heat pump and as a refrigerator.

QUESTION 2.
a).Define the entropy of a thermodynamic system.
b).Write general equation for change in entropy for the following
processes: i). A reversible adiabatic process. ii). An irreversible adiabatic
process. iii). Any other reversible process.
c).A proposal seeking your investment in a company manufacturing heat
engines asserts that the design receives heat from a source at temperature
370K, rejects it at 320K and produces 1kJ of work for every 3kJ of heat
supplied, rejecting 2kJ to the sink at 320K.
i). Sketch the proposed heat engine showing the source and sink.
ii). Calculate the expected change in entropy of the universe due to the
heat engine.
iii).Based on your answer in ( bii ) above, will you invest in the proposed
company?

QUESTION 3.
a). Briefly explain the following as they relate to energy generation from
the sun: i) solar heating ii) solar electricity iii)
holdover.
b). List five components of a solar electricity system and their respective
functions.
c). A solar-powered heat engine is to be designed for Yaba using flat-plate
collector. The maximum and minimum temperatures of the power cycle are
90℃ and 35℃ respectively. i).Determine maximum possible
efficiency of the cycle.
ii).If the plate collector efficiency is 60% and the average daily solar
insolation rate in Yaba is 6.8kWh/m2, estimate the minimum collector area
required for operating a 100Watt bulb for nine (9) hours each day.

QUESTION 4.
a). Derive an expression for the change in entropy of a unit mass of a
perfect gas having constant specific heats in terms of the pressure and
volume at initial and final states.
b). A quantity of a gas at an initial state of 1.4bar,0.13 m3 and 25℃ is taken
through a compression process on a path defined by PV 1.25=constant to a
pressure of 14bar. Determine the change in entropy after the compression.
