QUIZ BOWL MANUAL

BSBA FM S1 / BACC 2 (Sat 01:00 PM-03:00 PM) 2024

I. Introduction:
The students will engage in a challenging quiz competition. This
manual outlines the full mechanics and guidelines for the
competition.

All participants and coaches are expected to read, understand,

and adhere to the guidelines outlined in this manual.

Teams and Coaches:

 Team 1
Coach: CARATAO, DANIELA MAUREEN RAMIREZ

 Team 2
Coach: BUYAN, RUDYLIN RONOLO

 Coaches will serve as assistants to the game master, the

Professor, ensuring smooth competition flow and aiding in
administrative tasks when required.

 Coaches are not allowed to participate in the Quiz

Competition.

 Coaches should remain inside the game room unless tasked

by the game master to fetch (5 minutes) their
representatives or other tasks given by the game master.

 Coaches have the right to appeal any decisions or coaching

violations. The game master, with input from the neutral
observers or referees, will make the final decision on any
appeals.

II. Schedule of Events:

 Quiz Contest: November 16, 2024

 Final Exam: November 23, 2024

III. Competition Coverage:

 The quiz will encompass all the areas under the Syllabus.

 The game master will objectively create questions, ensuring

unbiased representation of all covered areas and their
respective answers will be automatically given after the
representatives raised their respective answers.

 In case of disputes over answers, the game master is the

one who will decide.
IV. Mechanics:
General Setup:
 The students will operate as a team.

 The game master will oversee the competition.

 Each team in the game room will be set up so as not to face

each other to avoid distractions.

Selection, Role of Representatives:

 The game master will be the one to choose the
representatives per difficulty:
1. Easy: 5 representative(s) per team.
2. Medium: 5 representative(s) per team.
3. Difficult/Hard: 5 representative(s) per team.

 An unwilling or absent representative results in a 50-point

per representative deduction for the team.

Substitution:
 Coaches are limited to a total of 5 substitutions at any
difficulty level throughout the entire game.

 One substitute is equivalent to one student, meaning the

substitution rule applies to a maximum of 5 students. Once
a student has been substituted out, they cannot return to
the game.

 Coaches have the flexibility to make multiple substitutions

at once, but each replaced student counts toward the
number of substitution limit.

 A student must participate in at least 2 questions before

becoming eligible for substitution.

 The coach must request a substitution before the game

master starts reading the next question. Once the question
begins, no substitutions are allowed until it concludes.

 As previously stated, an unwilling or absent representative

incurs a 50-point deduction per representative for the
section.
o The substitution rule does not exempt this penalty.
Therefore, a substitution cannot be used to evade the
50-point penalty.

o A representative is considered 'unwilling' if they refuse

to participate when called, and 'absent' if they are not
present in the game room when summoned.

Rooms & Equipment:

 Coaches are responsible for booking the game room and
two separate holding rooms, for each team, located away
from the game room. Moreover, bookings include the use of
audio-visual devices (e.g. T.V., projector, microphone, or
speakers). Coaches can appoint any students from their
respective teams to assist with this task. Essential
equipment includes a whiteboard, marker, eraser, cameras
for live streaming, and stable internet connectivity.
Coaches are advised to consult the school's IT department.

 For the Game Room:

o Projector/TV Screen with cable connections to laptops
for displaying questions to contestants.
o 1 laptop (provided by the teams) for displaying and
broadcasting questions.
o 1 laptop (to be provided by the teams) for managing
audio and timers.
o 1 cell phone with a stand (to be provided by the teams)
for broadcasting the game master and coaches.
o 2 cellphones with stands (to be provided by the teams)
for broadcasting each team's contestants.
o Stable internet connection.

 For the Holding Room: None required; students can watch

the contest on their phones.

 Please ensure that the rooms and technical equipment

needed for the event are booked in advance for your
convenience. Coaches should keep the professor updated on
these arrangements.

Scoring System:
 Easy: 10 questions, 1 point each, multiple choice. Total: 10
points

 Medium: 10 questions, 5 points each,

identification/enumeration. Total: 50 points
 Hard: 10 questions, 10 points each, multiple choice. Total:
100 points

 Maximum Obtainable Score: 160 points.

 The team with the highest score wins. However, to have the
privilege of a winner, a team must accumulate at least 50
points. Otherwise, if the winner has less than 50 points,
they will not have the privilege of a winner and will be
treated also as a loser; and will only have bragging rights.

Time Limit & Tie-Breaker Rules:

Time Limit:
 Easy: Answer 5 seconds after the question is repeated. After
this, they must raise their whiteboards. Format: Multiple
choice.

 Medium: Answer 10 seconds after the question is repeated.

After this, they must raise their whiteboards. Missing one
element in identification or enumeration results in zero
points. Format: Identification/Enumeration.

 Hard: Answer 30 seconds after the question is repeated.

After this, they must raise their whiteboards. Format:
Hypothetical questions requiring a Yes/No answer followed
by a legal basis.

Tie-Breaker
In the event of a tie, there will be a tie-breaker round consisting
of three questions. The first team to correctly answer two out of
three questions will be declared the winner. This process will
repeat until a team answers correctly.

Penalties & Restrictions:

 Any verbal or non-verbal communication from non-
participants that seems to suggest an answer, such as
whispering, mouthing words, or using hand signals, will be
considered coaching.

 Coaching, even from holding areas, is strictly forbidden.

Neutral personnel of the game master may be designated in
the holding rooms.

 Consequences for Coaching (applies throughout the entire

game and does not reset):

1. First Offense: Warning

2. Second Offense: A penalty of 20 points is deducted
from the offending team's score.

3. Third Offense and succeeding: A penalty of 30 points is

deducted from the offending team's score.

The teams can discuss the answers in their respective

holding rooms, as long as their answers will not be heard in
the game room.

If a team is found to be intentionally coaching to sabotage

the competition, the team will be immediately disqualified.
Their score for the semi-final exam will be zero, all students
must take the Final Exams, and additional disciplinary
actions may be taken by the institution as deemed
appropriate.

 Equipment Malfunction: In case of technical difficulties,

there will be a 15-minute window to resolve the issue. If
unresolved, the game may be postponed or rescheduled.

 Confidentiality of Questions: All questions are confidential

and have not been disclosed to any party, including the
coaches, before the quiz competition.

 Audience Behavior: Audience members, whether in-person

or online, are expected to maintain decorum and not
interfere with the competition in any way. Disruptive
behavior will result in removal from the event.

Broadcasting:
 The competition will be broadcast live on a closed online
platform only (e.g. messenger, zoom, or Google Meet).
This is to provide the teams in the holding room with an
update inside the game room.

 This should not be broadcast in public.

 Coaches are also advised to consult the school's IT

department.

V. Privileges:
Winner:
 Will have a perfect score on the Semi-final Exam.
 Will have a perfect score on the Final Exam.
 Guaranteed to pass the subject except for those unworthy
students as determined by the professor.
Loser:
 Will have a perfect score on the Semi-final Exam.
 Will proceed to take the Final Exam.
 Not guaranteed to pass the subject.

VI. Fair Play & Integrity:

Any form of cheating will be strictly penalized the same with
coaching.

VII. Final Notes:

This competition is designed to assess not only the academic
proficiency of the students but also their teamwork, discipline,
and integrity. Every participant is urged to compete with honesty
and uphold the institution's values.
