IV. PROCEDURE:
Explicit Teaching
Addition/ Subtraction Facts and Multiplication/ Division Facts Use ‘’show me’’
board where they can write answers.

A.Introduction/ Ask: Have you ever seen a math problem with more than one operation in it?
Presentation How do we know which to do first?
Explain: When solving math problems with more than one operation( like addition,
subtraction, multiplication, or division) we need to follow specific rules
to get the right answer. These are called Order of Operations.
1.Teach MD rule ( Multiplication and Division)
Explain that multiplication and division should be solved in the order they
appear from left to right.

Example: 24 ÷ 6 x 2
From left to right: 24 6 = 4
Then: 4 x 2 = 8
B.Modeling/ Answer: 8
Teaching
Teach AS rule ( Addition and Subtraction)
Addition and subtraction are solved in the same way, from left to right
Example: 10 - 3 + 5
From left to right: 10 - 3 = 7
Then: 7 + 5 = 12
Answer: 12
C.Guided Work through examples together:
Example 1. 8 ÷ 4 x 2 2. 12 + 5 – 7
2 x2 17 - 7
Practice
Answer: 4 Answer: 10

GROUP ACTIVITY
D. Group Practice Divide the class in 4 groups.
Provide activity sheets for them to answer.

Learners’ Takeaways Ask: In solving a series of operations, in what order do you perform addition and
subtraction? multiplication and division?

Have some pupils perform the AS rule and MD rule, and let them explain
E. Independent their work after showing the solution.
Practice

Separate paper
Evaluation

Have them answer the Learning Activity Sheets page 2.
