PART 1
INTRODUCTION

Information Technology (IT) has become an integral component of business organisations. As an


enabler for attaining a competitive edge, the role of IT in an organization is indispensable
spanning different functions and levels of management. The course is aimed at making the
business management students recognize the importance of IT in achieving the business
objectives of an organization, familiarize themselves with different types of information systems
that can be utilized across the organization’s value chain, and identify the business implications
of emerging technologies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES (CO)


1. To familiarize students with the various types of information systems and its applications in
organizations.
2. To enable them to understand the way information systems are set up, managed, and used
to achieve the strategic objectives of the organization.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)


By virtue of the learning gained in this course, the student should be able to:
CLO 1: Develop a conceptual understanding of the essential building blocks of modern
information systems (PLG 1)
CLO 2: Evaluate the different options for setting up an information system for a given business
scenario and recommend a suitable option. (PLG 2)
CLO 3: Analyse the organisational challenges in using latest technologies (PLG 3)

COURSE CONTENT
Introduction to Information systems in organisations, Types of IS, IT Infrastructure and its
components, Cloud computing and IoT and its impact on organisations. Introduction to emerging
technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, BIG DATA and data analytics, ethical
issues in artificial intelligence
IT and competitive advantage, Introduction to enterprise systems: ERP & CRM. Implementation
process and choices, challenges of enterprise systems. Software development life cycle and
AGILE development methods, Alternative systems acquisition methods. Introduction to Dataflow
diagrams and ER diagrams.
Information systems security and privacy issues: security threats and controls, security
standards.
