b. execute the basic cha cha movement; and
c.value the importance of Ballroom Dance as a form of art.

each partner needs to pose as a professional dancer on
a stage, for example:

colorful costumes.

a story about the brief history of ballroom dance.

Ballroom Dancing is from the Latin word “ballare, "


meaning “to dance”. Centuries ago, the ballroom only
performed for the privileged and well-to-do. The
ballroom is dance only for?

Correct! Folk dances are for the lowest people. But as


time went by, ballroom dancing became a fun hobby
for everyone, and now it is also used competitively.
Also, in Ballroom dance, we have the “leader” and
“follower”, who do you think are the leader and
follower in ballroom dance? (Students will raise their hand)

Yes, Mylene? The “leader” in ballroom dancing is the boy and the
“follower” is the girl.
Exactly! Now let us move to the first type of
ballroom which is Cha-Cha under the Latin dances,
do you have any idea about Cha-Cha?

It is originated in Cuba, Originally it was known as
a slowed-down mambo or “the triple step”.
Nice idea! Because of the three quick steps. We have
4 beats in Cha-Cha, 3 full beats, and 2 half beats.
The second type of ballroom is Salsa, do you have
any idea about Salsa? (Students will raise their hand)

Yes, Eloisa? Salsa is a sensual dance, that is similar to mambo.

Great! There is a well-known saying that is often


repeated by dance teachers- if you can walk, you can
dance salsa.
The third ballroom is Rumba, do you have any idea
about Rumba? (Students will raise their hand)

Yes, Suzzaine?
Rumba is generally regarded as the “dance of
romance”. This dance is the most intimate and
passionate dance in a ballroom.
Correct! This dance can also be used in romance or
weddings. Rumba is usually danced to music written
in 4/4 time.
The next ballroom dance is Samba, do you have any
idea about Samba? (Students will raise their hand)

Samba is a lively dance of Brazilian origin,
performed at street festivals and carnivals.
Precisely! The basic rhythm is 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8,
commonly described as “one, uh two” “three, uh
four”
Let us proceed to the next ballroom dance, which is
Jive. Do you have any idea about Jive?

Jive is an exciting partner dance, fun, and playful in
nature and also Jive is fast and energy-consuming.
Exactly! Also, Jive is more on lifting the knees and
bending or rocking the hips. A lot of kicks are used.
In competition, jive is also known as “survival
dance”.
The next ballroom dance is Swing, do you have any
idea about swing? (Students will raise their hand)

Yes, Sophia?
Swing is a lively, non-progressive partner dance
that can be danced to a wide variety of music.
Definitely! Beginners usually start with east coast
swing, because it is the easiest of all swing styles.
Also, we have Foxtrot, under the standard dances, do
you have any idea about Foxtrot?

Yes, Ligaya?
Foxtrot is smooth and elegant, it is usually danced
at weddings.
Definitely! Foxtrot is one of the most beautiful
ballroom dances characterized by long, flowing
movements. Foxtrot is named after its originator,
Harry Fox.
The next ballroom dance is Tango, can anyone have
any idea about Tango?
(Students will raise their hand)
Yes, Harry? Tango is a walking dance and is also referred to as
the “dance of love”.
Exactly! Why Tango is a “dance of love”?

Because it is a passionate and dramatic dance. It is


a dialogue between partners and an expressive form
of communication through movements.
Also, Tango is a fierce dance like paso doble in Latin.
Last, we have a Waltz. Do you have any idea?

Waltz is also an elegant, nearly universal dance and
perfect for weddings.
Good point! It is a smooth and graceful dance with
long long, flowing movements, characterized by rise
and fall motion. Ballroom dances can be the social
and competitive nature of ballroom dancing.

emotional expression of a routine. A strong
connection allows dancers to synchronize their
movements.

4. Application ( 10 minutes)
I will group you into four, each group creates a 1-
minute routine using the cha-cha basic steps, and you
have 5 minutes to develop your routine. This will be
the criteria, the highest score is 20 points.
