Assignment #1: Ecosystems in your community

1. In your household, neighborhood, community, or barangay, identify an

existing ecosystem (natural or artificial). Take a selfie picture of that
ecosystem as your background.
2. Show the location of your barangay by giving its name and getting a
screen shot of the barangay from a google map.

3. Identify 5 plants (with scientific names) and 5 animals (with scientific

names) existing in that ecosystem and determine their specific ecological
roles.

Biotic
Elements
Plants Scientific Name Picture Ecological Roles
(Niche)
Helianthus it provides food
Sunflower annuus for pollinators,
supports wildlife,
improves soil
health, aids in
phytoremediation,
and offers erosion
control.
Chico tree Manilkara it offers food and
zapota habitat for
wildlife, supports
pollinators,
enhances soil
fertility, and aids
in erosion control.

Mango Mangifera indica

tree it provides
habitat, food for
wildlife,
improves soil,
supports
pollinators,
controls erosion,
and sequesters
carbon.

calamansi Citrus enriches

tree microcarpa ecosystems by
providing
calamansi which
contains vitamins
that are helpful in
the digestive
system of people.
oregano Origanum It attracts
plant vulgare pollinators such
as bees and
butterflies, thus
contributing to
biodiversity.

Animals Scientific Name Picture Ecological Roles

(Niche)
Dog Canis lupus it can aid in
familiaris hunting, herding,
guarding,
companionship,
and emotional
support,
enhancing human
well-being and
social bonds.

Cat Felis catus controlling rodent

populations,
maintaining
ecosystem
balance, and
offering
companionship in
human habitats.
Mouse Mus musculus it serves as prey
for various
predators,
contributes to
nutrient cycling,
and influences
plant regeneration
through seed
dispersal.

Pigeon Columba livia it aids in seed

dispersal,
contributes to
nutrient cycling,
and serves as prey
for predators,
maintaining
ecosystem
balance.

Chicken Gallus gallus it aids in pest

domesticus control,
contributes to
nutrient cycling
through manure,
and serves as prey
for various
predators.
4. Identify 5 non-living things that you can observe in that ecosystem and
discuss the specific ecological roles of these items.

Abiotic Picture Ecological Roles

Elements
Fences Fences and
boundaries
demarcate property
lines, protect crops
from grazing
animals, and
regulate access to
sensitive areas.

House Houses in village

ecosystems serve
as shelters for
human inhabitants.
While primarily
non-living
structures, houses
indirectly impact
the environment
through their
construction
materials, energy
consumption, and
waste generation.
Street lights Street lights serve
primarily as
human-made
structures designed
to provide
illumination along
roads and pathways
in village
ecosystems,
enhancing visibility
and safety for
pedestrians and
drivers.
Electrical post Electrical posts,
also known as
utility poles or
electricity pylons,
are essential
components of
modern
infrastructure,
supporting
overhead power
lines that distribute
electricity in
village ecosystems.

Car Cars are non-living

objects that play
significant
ecological roles,
primarily through
their impact on the
environment.
While providing
transportation and
convenience for
humans, cars also
contribute to
various
environmental
challenges.
5. Give your impression or analysis if that ecosystem will last for more than 5
years. Justify your answer.

The sustainability of the village ecosystem for more than five years depends

on several factors. If the ecosystem is managed responsibly, with conservation

efforts to preserve biodiversity and sustainable agricultural practices, it stands a good

chance of lasting. However, potential threats such as habitat destruction, pollution,

climate change, and overexploitation of resources could destabilize the ecosystem.

Adequate measures to address these challenges, such as reforestation, waste

management, and community education, are essential. Additionally, fostering a

sense of environmental stewardship among villagers and promoting harmony

between human activities and nature would enhance the resilience of the ecosystem,

increasing its likelihood of enduring for years to come.
