2.6 PROFILE OF SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES GAINED/ACQUIRED
For the two months of industrial attachment at Public Works , I gained a widespread practical
experience with a remarkable development in my career. The following are the gained
experiences;

Time management

At Public Works, I learnt the importance of making use of each and every second that I had in
order to add value to the company.

Leadership skills

At the company I worked alongside with some departments and gained a lot of insight into the
nature of leadership.

A chance to work a Public Works t, gave me an opportunity to put into practice what I studied in
communication skills. This greatly improved my ability to listen carefully and understand what
was communicated.

Interpersonal skills

While at Public Works, I was able to interact with the staff and support staff; clients, cleaners,
drivers and security guards. I was able to learn how to associate with the different social classes
thus improving the interpersonal skills.

Teamwork

I was able to engage myself with different people at Public Works together with different work at
the organization.
CHAPTER THREE

3.0 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DAILY ACTIVITIES

First Day: Reporting and Orientation

The attachment journey kicked off with an insightful orientation session, shedding light on the
organizational structure and the integral role of the construction and design team. A welcoming
environment was established, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the team. The day
concluded with the assignment of a research project, a pivotal task aimed at understanding the
multifaceted responsibilities of the construction and design team within the organization.

Assignment Submission and Site Inspection

As the week progressed, considerable focus was placed on the research assignment. This
involved a deep dive into the literature, interviews with key team members, and the synthesis of
information into a coherent report. Simultaneously, an enriching site inspection at Mukanga Sub-
county Hospital provided practical insights, aligning theoretical knowledge with on-the-ground
realities.
Institution Meeting and Autocard Installation
The second week commenced with a comprehensive institution meeting, providing attachees
with a broader understanding of ongoing projects and the collaborative efforts required. A
subsequent class session developed into the theoretical aspects of architectural design. A
highlight of the week was the installation of autocard, a pivotal software tool in the real of
construction and design.

Drawing Tips and Plan Assignment

The week unfolded with engaging discussions on drawing techniques. Practical application
became the focus as attachees attempted to create simple plans of electric installation and
received assignments to transition these designs into the digital realm. This marked the initiation
of hands-on experience with autocard software
Ministry Board Meeting and Autocard Training
The third week introduced attachees to the broader organizational context through participation
in a board meeting under the Ministry of Public Works. This exposure provided valuable insights
into the industry's regulatory landscape. The week further unfolded with practical Autocard
training, including software installation and an exploration of different roof types and their
integration into design plans.

Circuit design and testing

This was done by creating circuit diagrams using systematic software such as CAD software and
selecting appropriate components such as resistors, capacitors and transistors. This entails
arranging components and routing traces to ensure optimal performance and manufacturability.

We conduct functional tests to ensure the circuit operates as intended by using instruments like
oscilloscopes, muiltimeters, and signal generators to measure and analyze circuit performance.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
This entails routine inspections such as conducting regular inspections of electrical systems and
equipments to identify potential issues. Checking for wear and tear, loose connections and signs
of damage or corrosion.

We performed schedule maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubricating and replacing worn
components. We also repaired and replaced faulty components such as fuses, relays, switches
and wiring.
Installation of electrical systems
Here we conducted site surveys to assess the layout and specific requirements for the installation
by reviewing blueprints, diagrams and technical specifications. We selected and prepared the
necessary tools, equipment and materials for installation by ensuring all components meet the
specified standard and requirements. We installed electrical wiring, conduits and cable trays
according to design specifications and labeling and organizing cables for easy identification and
future maintenance.
Project Management

During attachment period , I assisted in defining the project scope, objectives and deliverables
and helping to create detailed project schedules and timelines using project management
software like Microsoft project or trello.

We prepared project documentation such as project charters, plans and status report, maintaining
detailed records of project activities, decisions and changes as well as assisting in writing
technical reports and project summaries.

We also assisted with procurement of materials and services needed for the project and to
manage vendor relationships and track procurement progress.
CHAPTER FOUR

3.0 PURPOSE OF THE ATTACHMENT

These are some of the purpose of attachment for an intern;

 To develop the intern’s understanding of work ethics, employment demands,

responsibilities and opportunities.
 To provide an opportunity for interns to apply the principles and techniques learnt into
real-life problem solving situations.
 To enable intern to apply knowledge learned
 Enables an intern to acquire practical skills
 It strengthens work values and gain interpersonal skills
 It encourages teamwork and the ability to build positive relationships.
 Helps in good communication skills
 It also enables an intern to expand more on the field of attachment/study.
3.1 CHALLENGES
Some of the challenges faced at the organization are;

1) Adopting to working environment - Being new in the organization, it took some time to
get used and cope with the working environment.
2) There was no enough work sometimes–there was no enough work assigned to me, hence
ended up bored and underutilized.
3) Inadequate training equipment for interns
4) Noise Pollution of the environment around the company due to some activities going on
around
5) Sometimes there is an air pollution around the company
3.2 RESOLUTION TO THE CHALLENGES
These are some of the resolutions for the challenges named above;

1) I was able to adopt to the environment by engaging myself in different activities and
interacting with some of the employees.
2) Being no enough work to do, I was able to make myself busy by carrying out research in
the field of attachment. Also the supervisor was able to provide a schedule of duty.
 Noise pollution around the company –Being the Company is located next to the
road, there is no way the situation could be dealt with since it is a very busy area.
CHAPTER FOUR

RECOMMENDATIONS, FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION

4.1 FINDINGS
 Inadequacy of attachment places –some students ended up not getting places for
attachment early enough as required.
 There is air pollution around the company sometimes, which really irritates workers and
people around the company.
4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
This report gives recommendations based on the findings named above;

 I would like to urge schools to strengthen more on attachment programs as it is indeed

helping students to get a practical experience of the book work which prepares them on
the actual job before them.
 It is recommended that the school should seek for attachment places early enough for
students who miss out
 Public works as an organization should provide interns with motivation services that
would encourage them and even sustain themselves during the attachment periods.
 I would like to recommend the head of the company to liase with the interns and the
supervisor on how to at least provide motivational services for interns.
4.3 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I have to thank my supervisor for his support and guidance throughout this
attachment period. I really appreciate the way I was guided through this attachment from the
beginning to the end. I also had time I needed to learn and expand my knowledge in several
issues.

Public works provided an enabling environment where I could discover and learn to value my
new working environment and finally earned the confidence to deal with assignments myself. It
is through my colleagues that I enjoyed my work.
