Partial Replacement of Granite Powder & Quarry Dust in Concrete
Abstract: Concrete plays a vital role in the construction material in the world. For the longer life span of the structure, it is
necessary to study the behaviour of the concrete. With increase in the cost of construction material there is a huge need to curtail
the same by using cheaper substitute material in the concrete. Granite powder is one of the waste which can be blended with
cement to enhance the concrete compressive strength with quarry dust as partial replacement for sand. In this work granite power
is used as the partial substitute in proportion varying by different percentage(15%,20%,25%)by the weight of the cement in
concrete and replacing sand by quarry dust by different percentage (30%,40%,50%) .The results shows that the partial
replacement using 15 % of granite powder and 30 % of quarry dust in concrete gives the better compressive strength of concrete.
Index Terms: Granite powder, quarry dust, Self-absorption polymer, compressive strength.
I. INTRODUCTION
Various types of concrete are manufactured these days for construction of buildings and structures. These have special
properties and features, which improve quality of construction as per requirement.
Concrete is a family of different material like binding material (cement+ fly ash), fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water.
Today construction cost is very high with using conventional materials due to unavailability of natural materials. This problem
can be solved by total replacement of concrete with different material, which is not convenient in terms of required properties.
Due to this limitation of unavailability of material, which plays the vital role of concrete, the option available is partial
replacement of concrete ingredients by waste materials. Over 3.3 billion tons of cement was consumed globally in 2010 based on
survey of world coal association and also cement production emits CO 2 in to the atmosphere, which is harmful to the nature. If we
can partially replace the cement with the material with desirable properties then we can save natural material and reduce emission
of CO2 in to the atmosphere. This industrial waste dumping to the nearest site, which spoils the land and atmosphere as well as it
also, affects aesthetics of urban environment so use of this waste material in concrete is cost effective as well as environment
friendly way to disposal of waste. The primary objective of this study is to select the waste material, which gives desirable
properties with concrete. This study includes previous.
The concept of replacement of natural fine aggregate by quarry dust, which is highlighted in the study, could boost the
consumption of quarry dust generated from quarries. By replacement of quarry dust, the requirement of land field area can be
reduced and can also solve the problem of natural sand scarcity. The availability of sand at low cost as a fine aggregate in
concrete is not suitable and that is the reason to search for an alternative material. Quarry dust satisfies the reason behind the
alternative material as a substitute for sand at very low cost. It even causes burden to dump the crusher dust at one place, which
causes environmental pollution. From the results of experimental investigations conducted. Quarry dust is a by-product of the
crushing process, which is a concentrated material to use as aggregates for concreting purpose, especially as fine aggregates. In
quarrying activities, the rock has been crushed into various sizes; during the process, the dust generated is called quarry dust and
it is formed as waste. So it becomes as a useless material and also results in air pollution. Therefore, quarry dust should be used in
construction works, which will reduce the cost of construction, the construction material would be saved, and the natural
resources can be used properly. Most of the developing countries are under pressure to replace fine aggregate in concrete by an
alternate material also to some extent or totally without compromising the quality of concrete. Quarry dust has been used for
different activities in the construction industry, such as building materials, road development materials, aggregates, bricks, and
tiles. The present research work mainly deals with the influence of different replacement proportion of sand with quarry dust on
the properties of concrete. The present study is planned to study the effects of quarry dust addition in normal concrete and to
assess the rate of compressive strength development.

VII. CONCLUSION
The results obtained clearly shows that the partial replacement of granite powder by 15% of weight of cement and partial
replacement of quarry dust by 30% weight of the sand, gives the most effective compressive strength of the concrete.
