SLIGO JAZZ PROJECT,
INTERNATIONAL SUMMER
SCHOOL & JAZZ FESTIVAL
Welcome to Sligo Jazz Festival 2024! Now in our 19th year, the event known to
many as the Sligo Jazz Project (SJP) has grown to become the biggest and most
inclusive jazz education event in Europe. With a faculty of 30 musicians teaching
and performing for the week, our annual summer school event has grown to
attract about 150 visiting participants, including a huge Youth Academy of up to
50 young musicians in partnership with Music Generation in Sligo, Mayo and other
counties.
What makes Sligo Jazz Festival so unique is the combination of Irish and
international jazz musicians who are teaching for the week and also performing on
the various live events each day. Summer school participants get to attend our
esteemed faculty members’ morning workshops and masterclasses at ATU Sligo,
have lunch with them, are guided by them each afternoon in their ensemble
sessions and attend their concerts each evening, sometimes even getting to jam
with their heroes on our twice daily jam sessions.
Among those coming here to teach and perform this year are Grammy winners,
nominees, and award winning international musicians including our 2024 Artist in
Residence, the New York based Cuban born composer, pianist and educator, Elio
Villafranca. SJP has have gone to great lengths to assemble a faculty of
sympathetic musicians who will perform and teach with the maestro.
of whom, we can proudly attest, attended our summer school in the past and now
are teaching here and performing at the festival, including last year’s Young Artist
in Residence, Nils Kavanagh. You can find them all dotted throughout this
programme and in various venues throughout the week.
On this proud note, I’d like to thank you all for being part of this amazing event
and helping it grow each year. I sincerely hope you all have a fabulous week and
are filled with inspiration from your experience of Ireland’s most unique jazz
festival!

T HUR SD AY 25 J U LY
Sligo Jazz Project has rarely seen such a combination of world-class stature on the
Hawks Well stage. Our 2024 Artist in Residence is joined by a scintillating line-up of
international and Irish musicians including his core group of long time collaborators:
Alejandro Aviles, Freddie Hendrix, Dion Parson and Manel Fortia have all made the
long trip to Sligo for the week, joining Elio on the SJP 2024 faculty from various parts
of the globe. Drummer Dion Parson is a long-time Villafranca collaborator, our first
faculty member hailing from St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, and is joined by Cuban
saxophonist Alejandro Aviles, Spanish bassist Manel Fortia and New Jersey based
trumpet tour de force Freddie Hendrix. Award winning UK musicians Siegel, Lockrane
and Clarvis complete the line up along with Cork trombonist Paul Dunlea and
Leitrim’s own Cathal Roche!
T HU R SD AY 25 J ULY
Born in the rugged, rural landscape of County Donegal Ireland, Conor and Micheal Murray
began experimenting with various different instruments in Irish traditional music like the Fiddle,
Guitar, and Tin Whistle before settling on Saxophone and Double Bass respectively at age
twelve. Both brothers quickly developed a strong love for jazz music after this and in 2013,
attended the Sligo Jazz Project when they began their astonishing upward curve, fast forward
ten years and both are busy members of the international jazz scene, Conor in the UK and
USA and Micheal in continental Europe. Both brothers have performed on many occasions
with their Derry born friend Joseph Leighton, now a prominent figure on the London jazz
scene. Joseph is another fine young musician mentored at Sligo Jazz throughout recent years
and who has also, like the Murrays, been on the SJP faculty now for several years.
