RESERVOIR SIMULATION

TERM PROJECT
Assigned: Thursday Nov 1, 2023
Deadline: Last day of the semester

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT. COPY, CHEATING AND STEALING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED

Problem Statement
In this term project, you are going to use the knowledge obtained from Reservoir Simulation
course to evaluate the effect of formation properties on primary oil recovery from a 2 - D horizontal
reservoir (as show Figure 1). The reservoir contains only oil phase and is subdivided evenly into
9 nodes. It has a producer located at node (2, 2) producing at a constant bottom hole pressure.
The reservoir is homogeneous and has no flow outer boundaries. The properties and dimensions
of the reservoir are summarized in Table 1.
Note: You should write your computer code to assist your calculation.

Figure 1: Reservoir grid configuration.

RESERVOIR SIMULATION

Your Assignment
1. Start from the flow equation for oil phase in a 1-D horizontal reservoir:

∂ ko ∂po ∂ ko ∂po ∂
ρo + ρo + ρo q̂o = (ρo φ) (1)
∂x µo ∂x ∂y µo ∂y ∂t
derive the algebraic equation for numerical simulation using Finite Difference Method learnt
in the class to show how you simulate the production from reservoir.
2. Calculate and plot the pressure of the reservoir after 100 days, 1000 days, and 3650 days of
production. You should tabulate your results in a table as shown in Table 2 (using 2-decimal
precision).
3. Plot the oil production rate and cumulative oil production over 3650 days of production.
4. Plot the oil recovery factor over 3650 days of production.

Table 2: Reservoir pressure

Pressure [psi]
Node
100 days 1000 days 2000 days
1 ? ? ?
2 ? ? ?
... ... ... ...
... ... ... ...
20 ? ? ?

5. If the total cost for drilling and completion as well as production operations of the well is 12
million dollars, and the average crude price is $80/bbl, do you think this project is feasible
after 3650 days of production? If k = 1 mD, do you think the project is feasible?
6. Using data in Table 1, only change the pore compressibility from cφ = 6 ∗ 10−6 psi-1 to
cφ = 3 ∗ 10−6 psi-1 . Plot the oil recovery factor and cumulative oil production over 3650 days
and compared the results with the results of the based case. What is your observation on
the effect of pore compressibility on oil recovery?
7. Using data in Table 1, only change the oil compressibility from co = 3 ∗ 10−6 psi-1 to
co = 6 ∗ 10−6 psi-1 . Plot the oil recovery factor and cumulative oil production over 3650 days
and compared the results with the results of the based case. What is your observation on
the effect of fluid compressibility on oil recovery?
8. Using data in Table 1, only change the permeability from k = 5 mD to k = 0.5 mD and
k = 0.05 mD . Plot the oil recovery factor and cumulative oil production over over 3650 days
and compared the results with the results of the based case. What is your observation on
the effect of permeability on oil recovery?
9. Using data in Table 1, only change the oil viscosity from µo = 2.5 cP to µo = 2.0 cP and
µo = 1.5 cP. Plot the oil recovery factor and cumulative oil production over over 3650 days
and compared the results with the results of the based case. What is your observation on
the effect of fluid viscosity on oil recovery?
10. If nodes (2, 2) is being contaminated with permeability reduction of 20%, how this would
affect the production from the reservoir.
You should conduct more study than what I suggested here to get good grade.
