Traditions & Epic of Biag ni Lam-ang: The Ilocanos have an epic called Biag ni Lam-
Cultures ang, which is a highly Hispanicized metrical romance composed in the
nineteenth century. This epic tells the story of Lam-ang, a hero with
extraordinary abilities, and is a significant part of Ilocano folklore.
Food Customs and Beliefs: Food plays a crucial role in Ilocano culture.
When eating, family members gather around food laid out on the floor
or eat in different parts of the main room. It is believed that food
symbolizes God's grace, so eating should be done quietly without noise
or harsh words. Dropping food is considered disrespectful as it may
anger the food, and leaving while someone is still eating is discouraged.
Marriage Traditions: In Ilocano culture, marriage involves several
traditional practices. Families meet to discuss details like sponsors,
dowry, wedding dress, and cash rewards for the bride's family. Parents
also visit a planetarium to determine auspicious wedding dates. Young
couples seek approval from both sets of parents before deciding to
marry, highlighting the importance of family consent in Ilocano
marriages.
