Laboratory Experiment 6
I. Introduction
The falling head technique is commonly used to calculate the time required for a flow through an
opening to lower the water level in a reservoir or empty a vessel. The volume reduction in the first
reservoir upstream equals the volume rise in the second reservoir downstream.
II. Objective
III. Apparatus/Materials
• Hydraulic Bench
• Orifice Apparatus
• Stopwatch
• Vernier Calip
• Pen/Marker
• Masking Tape
IV. Procedure
1. Position the reservoir across the channel on the top of hydraulic bench and level.
2. Install the first orifice plate by tightening the knurled knots.
3. Turn on the pump and open the bench valve gradually.
4. Position the overflow tube to give a high head.
5. Close the bench valve and start the stopwatch. Take readings of the falling heads at the chosen
time interval. Attach masking tape beside the scale.
6. Repeat Step 4 and 5 using the second orifice.
The orifice may be used to measure flow rates if the geometric parameters of the orifice and the
intrinsic qualities of the fluid are understood. Flow measurement via an orifice is based on the use of
Bernoulli's equation, which posits that there is a link between fluid pressure and velocity. The flow
velocity and discharge estimated using Bernoulli's equation must be modified to account for energy
loss and viscosity. So, the laboratory experiment is being carried out to measure the coefficients of the
provided orifices
