Laboratory Experiment 10

Discharge Through a Sluice Gate

Name: Bermoy, Bethany G. Instructor: Ms. Michelle Daarol

Program: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Code: 2255

I. Introduction

Gates disrupt the flow and generate nonuniform flow conditions upstream and downstream of the
gate. Depending on the tailwater depth, the outflow from these gates is classed as free or
submerged. The flow properties behind the gates have been widely explored, both theoretically and
experimentally. This experiments for free gate outflow conditions were carried out in a horizontal
rectangular flume. In addition, an equation for calculating the coefficient of discharge for both silled
and non-silled gates was devised, and its performance was compared to that of other researchers.

II. Objective
Visualize the ff.:
• Discharge beneath a sluice gate
• Creation of hydraulic jump downstream of a sluice gate
• The drowning of a sluice gate

III. Apparatus/Materials

• Hydraulic Bench
• Flow Visualization Channel
• Sluice Gate
• Forceps
• Marbles
• Dye & Mount Accessories
• Stopwatch

IV. Procedure

1. Install the visualization apparatus over the hydraulic bench open channel
2. Add marbles to the apparatus reservoir to reduce the level of flow disturbances in the in-flowing
fluid.
3. To improve contrast, dye can be added to the water and mount it in the apparatus reservoir.
4. Install sluice gate on the channel with the help of the forceps.
5. Adjust the overshot and undershot weir to create:
➢ Supercritical flow under sluice gate
➢ Flow under sluice gate with hydraulic jump
➢ flow under sluice gate (drowned)

VIII. Discussion of Results/Conclusion

These valves are often used to control water levels and flow rates in rivers and canals and are
designed to seal in only one way. They are also utilized in sewage treatment plants. The presence of
a sill under a sluice gate improves flow characteristics by increasing the coefficient of discharge
regardless of form. Shape and height both have a crucial influence in increasing the discharge
coefficient. Flow parameters, gate opening, sill height, and sill form elements are all included in the

calculation. The generated equation matches well with the experimental results as well as published
data from other researchers.
